Plot: The twins of Paul "Muad'dib" Atreides become embroiled in the political landscape of Arrakis ("Dune") and the rest of the universe.
This sequel to the first Sci-Fi Channel adaptation of rank Herbert's masterpiece Dune was interesting, to say the least. Some would argue trying to cover two Herbert novels at once, in this case Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, in a single series is a bit too epic for anyone, but I think it was executed rather well.
Of course this film was made even more enjoyable by a shirtless McAvoy running around for more than half the film, hehe.
Under Paul "Muad'Dib" Atreides' rule as Emperor, the planet Arrakis has enjoyed a renaissance. However, the revolution that Muad'dib inspired has transformed into a brutal jihad that has plunged all of humanity into a bitter, neverending cycle of interstellar war.
Now a conspiracy on Arrakis threatens to rob Muad'Dib of his throne and his life. The future of all of humanity might well rest in the hands of Muad'dib's young, vulnerable heirs ? Leto II and his sister, Ghanima. Idealistic young Leto, however, fiercely resists his destiny as a force for sweeping changes, both on Arrakis and in the universe at large.
Unfortunately, the time for Leto to take action is drawing near, and friends and enemies are difficult to tell apart on Arrakis, where the only thing more precious than water is the Spice, a substance found only on Arrakis that makes possible interstellar space travel; extends life; and enables people who ingest it to have clairvoyant visions of distant places and of the future.
With the rule of Arrakis and the freedom of all humanity hanging in the balance, Leto must risk sacrificing his own humanity in order to save those who would see him destroyed.

Great movie, long, but great. I think that this movie has the last two books in it, so it is longer than the actual book, Children of Dune.
for some reason i was really drawn to the visuals of this movie...i have read most of the dune books
Alia: I hate you. I love you. I will never forgive you.

It's Shakespearean. It's Sci-Fi. It's epic. It's a beautiful story to be told. It's Frank Herbert's Children of Dune, the sequel to the worthy Dune miniseries helmed by John Harrison, who directs the first mini-series. Like its predecessor, it is faithful to the spirits of Herbert's books (despite radical changes) as Harrison has promised to many Dune fans. This time, however, many of the technical values that slightly plague the first one has been greatly improved.
In the second and third installments of the Dune Chronicles (both directed by Greg Yaitanes), Paul Atreides, who once led the Fremen Rebellion against the Corrino Emperor and the forces of Landsraad, now has become the new Emperor of the Whole Universe.
However, his legacy lays a deep scar upon the universe: he becomes a god, a symbol of religion, alongside with her sister Alia, creating fanatics who will do anything to fulfill Paul's dreams. By sending his Fremen troopers to conquer every planet, many of the key foundations including the Bene Gesserit and the Tleilaxu (as well as the inhabitants of Dune themselves) begin to hatch a conspiracy that will end Paul's reign of terror once and for all. Despite Paul's struggles to create a better future, he fails to get things right as everything he envisions turns to ash ala King Midas, so his only salvation is his twin children, especially his son who will demystify Paul and create another future known as The Golden Path, the one path that will ensure the survival of humanity.
Before this miniseries' release, I already know that alterations are inevitable (9-year-old twins suddenly face an abrupt puberty, hence becoming teens) and fear that it might turn out to be equally bizarre as the first miniseries. However, the final product is simply satisfying and is a reminiscent of any classic Hallmark show based on famous fairy tales you can recall of.
First of all, the cast is outstanding. Alec Newman, who doesn't fit or seem right as the young Paul in the first outing, finally fits and seems right as the struggling Emperor; even his alter ego performance of The Preacher is equally inspiring as well. Some of the old favorites such as Barbora Kodetova and Julie Cox reprise their roles and show both maturity and improvement. The newcomers prove to be interesting as well: James McAvoy and Jessica Brooks play beautifully as the Atreides twins (in this point, I REALLY call it a blessing from Shai-Hulud), Daniela Amavia proves her allure and ferocity as Alia, the psychotic regent of Arrakis and Edward Atterton deserves special attention for his noble role as Duncan Idaho.
Personally, I always thought that Alice Krige has done a number of her finest moments as Lady Jessica. Sarah Sarandon's Wensicia, on the other hand, looks and sounds a bit dry but it's the raspy quality that makes her the Wicked Witch.
Overall, Children of Dune is a major accomplishment.
The spice must flow...
I'm really sorry. The book "Dune" is one of my favorites. The second one is very good and they run downhill from there. I don't know why he wrote six or is it seven? I had high hopes for the first movie and it let me down. I can't imagine why they would make a sequal to a dissapointment. Some producers just have to much money I guess.
"to know the future is to be trapped by it, in knowing there is a trap is the first step in evading it, the first step along the golden path.
This is the second mini-series on the dune books. Now while the books lost me after the first this mini-series grabed me and pull me right in. This was a very catching show.
I'm not quite sure how this happened. The first Dune mini-series was pretty mediocre, despite the outstanding source material. I didn't really care for the books upon which this one was based, yet it turned out to be an improvement in every way upon the first. The saga of the Atreides family becomes almost Godfather-esque in this installment (complete with assassination/baby montage).
This one is also an excellent adaption, but it tries way too hard. Combining the second and third books into one movie was not a good idea. I would have liked to see each book done individually.
I guess I'm just weird,I like to watch these types of movies...odd,strange and so, what's the word...well you can't miss a part and keep up.
Just as good as the prequel. a Tale of plots within plots within plots that are meant to hold our hero back from going down the golden path and ridding "humanity of the perversions" done in his father's name.
Zomgnajnganblg! Children of Dune is FANTASTIC! 5 stars, bravo, for being the best sci-fi epic onscreen since the original star wars! It might not deserve quite 5, but that alone earns it (though the CGI "tigers" were horrible...everything else was great).
Not nearly as good as Dune (2000), but a decent attempt to make a movie out of the second and third books in the Dune saga.
Better than the first one (the scifi channel production of Dune). James McAvoy does an outstanding job.
It was okay but i dont think they should have put both books together in one movie..but its not horrible!
Combining the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune this is another Awesome achievement by the Sci-Fi channel!!! Makes me wish they would continue filming the rest of Frank Herberts Dune series!!! I Highly recommend this film for fans of the Dune books and any one who has seen the Dune miniseries!!!
Hahaha...remember years ago and you and John were watching this movie, and I thought that it was so boring that I was making fun of it...hehehe...those were the good times!!!
This sequel is what the new Star Wars sequels should have been - focused on charatorizations and plot, not costumes and scenery. Excellent!
The only thing I don't like about this movie is that Alec Newman isn't in it enough. Boo hoo. He's the best part as Paul. The second best is Leto, Paul's son. They're both great!
Very well done adaptation of books two and three of Herbert's wonderful series. Mostly accurate and obviously they put more work into these than the others.
Just as good as Dune it's self. They got the same people to star as the same characters except for one character. Full of all of the same things that made me love Dune to begin with, this is a DVD I must own!
Somewhat better than Dune (2000) but I can't quite rate it at the full 5 stars. Pretty much the same as the first in this series. Can't say William Hurt does justice to Duke Leto Atriedes. Jurgen Prochnow was way better. I could go on. But unless you are Fremen, you just wouldn't understand.
