Unforgettable and messed up, but intelligent and involving.
  • March 14, 2009
At easily over 2 hours long, this is definitely a long movie which demands a degree of attention. The ending was fantastic, albeit depressing and reminded me of No Country For Old Men. The most important thing I learned from this movie was that you need to be cool-headed and shar...( read more)p, in life, and not stomp around carelessly as if you can take on the world (as much as I adore action heroes and happy endings).

"Let me explain something to you, Walsh. This business requires a certain amount of finesse"

    10/10

Polanski offers a return to film noir. Pessimistic and dark, it is an essential viewing for any film-goer.

Chinatown is the apex of the 1970's film renaissance. Jack Nich...( read more)olson shines in one of his best performances with a mystifying atmosphere of intrigue and distrust.

Polanski's exploration of the detective thrillers of 1940's-50's film-noir is nothing short of dazzling.

A near perfect film. One of my favorite Jack Nicolson performances.

Could be my favorite of all - Great story - Jack Nicholson is great.
  • February 9, 2009
It feels really long, but it's worth seeing
  • February 6, 2009
Chinatown is a truly amazing throwback to the noir detective films of the 1940s. The mystery is surprising, engaging, and full of ironies that I may not fully understand until I watch it again. Did I mention that the cast is awesome too?
  • January 30, 2009
Interesting story, good acting, makes the ending work.
  • January 26, 2009
Fiendish, perplexing noir with a killer, bitter twist. Somehow both a product of the Movie Brat '70s and also strangely timeless, feeling like it belongs in the genres heyday.
  • January 13, 2009
Few movies shaped my views on what film could be when I was young like Chinatown did. This interchanges with A Clockwork Orange as my favorite movie.
  • January 11, 2009
Complicated, slow-building and ultimately shattering thriller from Hollywood's platinum years. Nicholson is excellent as the gumshoe who becomes obsessed with a case he may crack but never win, as is Dunaway as the ostensible "femme fatale" of the piece... or is she? Be sure to p...( read more)ay close attention to details and dialogue, you'll need your brain (you know, that thing you leave in a jar at the door when you see Michael Bay movies) to connect the pieces laid out here. Polanski gets the 30s noir feel down, filtered through a dark, very 70s political perspective. Admittedly, I didn't find it as compulsively watchable as much of its 1970s New Hollywood brethren, but it really is excellent work, from all involved.

A film I'd watch again, but I didn't get as much out of it as most other people did.
It's just a little to tamed for my tastes. I can see it for what it is, what it does, and how it does it. But, at the end of the day, it's just not my style.
  • January 4, 2009
    Jack Nicholson is awesome.
  • January 3, 2009
Nicholson kicks ass...his finest role. Polanski shines nicely here.
  • December 29, 2008
One of Jack Nicholson's finer moments, definitely a thriller.
  • December 11, 2008
Incest, blah blah, stolen water, blah blah. Nothing interesting here at all folks.
  • December 7, 2008
The ending was bothersome, very much like Polanski's endings during that period. Also, this was really a very hard-boiled thriller that is hard to pull off, by making a strong figure in a world of shaky politics. Also, I was impressed by he casting and the fine camera-work.
  • December 2, 2008
Wow. Just...wow. Probably the most perfect film ever made. Jack Nicholson convinces me, without any shadow of a doubt, that he is my favourite actor.
  • November 30, 2008
I sinister piece, an old film noir with Jack Nicholson at his best as a young-ish man. Didn't capture my imagination though.
  • November 27, 2008
    Polanski at his best.

A lush, commendable background score compliments some of the best cinematography I have seen.

I have a quibble or two with the story, but that's probably down to the film's release date more than anything else.

If I had to pick one Jack Nicholson film to ...( read more)watch, I'd pick Chinatown over The Shining.

This movie is definitely classic. You can't go wrong when we're talking young Jack Nicholson. A great detective story. I love how Roman Polanski likes to throw himself in his movies. He makes a great little appearance in this one. The feel of the 30's is captured well, although I...( read more) think it goes beyond just clothes and cars. But I shouldn't be so critical, it was a very classy movie on all accounts. It is a very well made, and I believe it is worth a watch for anyone down with detective thrillers, or Polanski, as it is one of his better films.
  • November 22, 2008
    not watchable when sleepy.
  • November 14, 2008
You've got a nasty reputation, Mr. Gitts. I like that.
  • November 8, 2008
this is for the film egghead in me. i didnt' expect to react to this film like i did when i saw it. i wanted to kill john huston's character--slimy bastard!
  • November 7, 2008
My favorite movie, the acting and directing were superb.
  • November 3, 2008
It's undoubtedly great, yet I don't warm to it.

Brilliant - one of my all-time favortie movies! Dark, brooding, and fantastic!!
  • October 28, 2008
One of the best mysteries ever and a brilliant example of film noir.
  • October 26, 2008
This one is absolutly fantastic. Jack Nicholson is the best actor ever. He couldn't have played this part any better. Faye Dunaway is brilliant. It's a great murder drama and mystery. If you have any good taste in movies...this is a must see. It blew me away the first time and it still does to this day. Roman Polanski is at his best in the direction of "Chinatown". It's a fantastic peice of Ameerican film. I can go on and on about it but I really don't like typing stuff. I just had to give my honest opinion about this movie. 10 STARS

This film is a killer, the perfect noir...steeped in atmosphere, the anti-hollywood hollywood movie with a great ending and a magnificent performance from Nicholson.
  • October 23, 2008
an exceedingly good film with power house performances from its leads!! This film is a good one for all those who enjoy a good detective story.
  • October 23, 2008
    My favorite Nicholson role.
  • October 22, 2008
This film has everything you could ask for. A charismatic male lead, sizzling female lead and a cleverly plotted and scripted who-dunnit. It was strange seeing Nicholson in the good guy role but he still gave enough to be both the rogue and the good guy. Great stuff!
  • October 21, 2008
A classic detective story. Great directing by Roman Polanski and great acting by Jack Nicholson.

"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown. "

Polanski's take on the film noir is a classic. Jack Nicholson is superb as the private detective Jake Gittes who becomes involved in a complex case of murder, incest and water supplies. Faye Dunaway also gives a memorable performance as Evel...( read more)yn Mulwray ("She's my sister AND my daughter!")
It seems that some people are disappointed by the ending but personally I think it is perfect and fitting.

Jack Nicholson stars as J.J. Gittes, a private detective hired to investigate an alleged marital indiscretion but uncovers more than he bargained for including deceit, corruption and murder. Right from the self consciously retro titles, Polanski sets out his stall; to recreate th...( read more)e classic noirs of the 40s and 50s, and a damn fine job he does too. Even to the point of casting legendary director John "The Maltese Falcon" Huston. Nicholson is at the height of his powers as the world weary ex detective and is complimented perfectly by Faye Dunaway with a possibly career best performance as the glamorous yet vulnerable femme fatale. The intelligent script constantly wrong foots you, playing with your assumptions and Polanski's direction is suitably hard boiled, shadowing Gittes as he uncovers the grim truth behind these unsavoury events. A fine homage and addition to one of my favourite genres and essential viewing for fans of crime drama.
  • October 20, 2008
Say what you will, any movie that can't grasp my attention within the first of three hours doesn't deserve my attention for the following two, and therefore I cannot possibly comment on the effectiveness, cleverness or originality of the plot, because by the 80 minute mark, I had...( read more) completely lost interest. Although Nicholson can act, his performance is dull and his character does nothing to help the viewer relate in any way to the film, and Dunaway is totally plain right through. The overall style needed to be far more atmospheric, because as it is it is lifeless and dragging, which is somewhat surprising, as Polanski films do not tend to be so. A true disappointment, with nothing but a potentially interesting opening idea to earn it any respect from me...

A classic film noir huh?! See it and you'll get my drift!
