Polanski is a pervert but he makes great movies. The plot holds you right from the beginning til the very end.

Chinatown is the best film noir ever made. There is no use in arguing with me on this one. Once you watch it, you will see that I am correct. Much like L.A. Confidential, it is loosely based on real life aspects of Los Angeles history. There really was a controversy...( read more) about the water supply in the Los Angeles area, but it didn't exactly play out like this. Jack Nicholson creates his best character and performance in this film as the sad, intelligent, and wise-assed detective Jake Gittes. Faye Dunaway is all neurotic twitches and off-beat beauty as Evelyn Mulwray, the woman who should be the femme fatale but is too fragile to truly be a threat. And, lastly but not least, there is John Huston as the charming, well spoken, and slightly frightening Noah Cross, Evelyn's father. The climactic scene is depressing and forbidding glimpse into how far Los Angeles' corruption would fall. From this ending point, it isn't hard to see where Blade Runner could begin.

Intriguing and over-the-top as film noir can get, but Polanski takes the genre a tad further... might type s'more laters... :p

  • August 15, 2008
One of the all time great movies. Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway are superb. John Huston is pure evil. Great score.

Chinatown?s greatest mystery is what makes it so damn good. Well, that is only a mystery if you haven?t seen it. If you have seen it, you know what a hell of a film this is. Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway are two of the greatest actors in cinema history, and when you put them to...( read more)gether on screen, the film is bound to be great. Not only do they have a great cast, the story is one of the best in cinema. It is about the murder of a man who owns the water company of Los Angeles. Sure, some of you reading this may be thinking how can that be entertaining. Well, it has so many twists and turns and drama that you want to watch the film over and over and over again. Roman Polanski, even though he is a pervert, can make one hell of a great film. There is no denying that. This film makes you think. That ultimately is what I love about the film. It makes you think. If a movie doesn?t make you think, it really isn?t worth watching. Comedies are the exception to this rule. But other than that, thinking is what makes a movie. Thinking is what you need to be doing when you go in. Thinking is what you need to be doing when you come out. If you don?t do this, you don?t understand any film. Chinatown is a masterpiece and is a force to be reckoned with.

Fantastic crime drama. Turns every which way but loose. A Polanski-enthusiast must. Not to mention Jerry Goldsmith's fantastic score.
  • August 5, 2008
A pretty good modern noir film, however it's just not amazing in my opinion. Definitely not as good as Polanski's Macbeth, however Jack Nicholson is great here, even if he is completely clueless.

I just didn't care for it. Very forgettable and I would not watch it again.
  • July 23, 2008
This, again, is a classic. I liked it, yes, but I thought it was a little slow. Jack Nicholson's plays Jake Gittes brilliantly though.
  • July 19, 2008
Fantastic movie. Nicholson is really great.
  • July 15, 2008
The best of modern film noirs. Roman Polanski directs a superb mystery that is highlighted by Jerry Goldsmith's score and Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography.
  • July 14, 2008
a good mysterious detectives movie. the last scene where the woman dies and the last line; "forget it Jake. It's Chinatown" is one of the best of all time.

This is Jacks best work (Cuckoos nest follows).
Story was a little rough but the acting got me through.
  • July 9, 2008
One of the greatest films ever. It's also one of those films than is a must see on the big screen, as it loses quite a bit on the small screen.
  • July 3, 2008
What can I say? This is one of the greatest noir films and THE greatest P.I. movie ever. Jack Nicholson is top notch as P.I. Jake Gittes. Faye Dunaway turns a wonderful performance and Roman Polanski's direction is superb.

''What happened to your nose, Gittes? Somebody slammed a bedroom window on it?''

''Nope. Your wife got excited. She crossed her legs a little too quick. You understand what I mean, pal?''

    Jack Nicholson: J.J. 'Jake' Gittes

    Faye Dunaway: Evelyn Cross Mulwray

What is Chinatown? Simply this, an unrivalled and perfect thinking man's film noir that completely surpasses all expectations.

Nicholson is at his best as Jake Gittes who he makes the role his own.
Only fifteen or so years after the classic film noir had run it's course Chinatown hits back as a stylish nostalgic homage.

Chinatown is no lazy bundle of clichés, it glues together everything crisp and excellent about film noir, and was rightly put in the hands of one of the most talented director's Roman Polanski in this case, of the day.

The political corruption, the cynical private eye hero and the femme fatale, the atmosphere of absolute despair, regret and the terrifying power of evil people are all covered in Chinatown.

But surprisingly Chinatown has much more than that. It was made in an era when cinema was lacking many traditionalist conventions, the burdens of censorship and ends up resulting in something more daring, more grown up. The characters are at once stylized references to form film noir figures.

Chinatown casts a spell over us the audience, with a tone that is both Jazzy and reflective of the era.
Starts slow and builds an incredible tension like a snow ball down a sheer mountain, that sweeps you up and drags you along until its overwhelming conclusion.

Be it a frantic encounter in an orange grove or a fight with a knife wielding thug who is actually Roman Polanski in a short but memorable cameo, or even the shocking emotional conclusion, Chinatown results in an intelligent smokey, detective piece.

If you haven't seen this movie yet, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING ALIVE?!
My review of it will be a special one for my blog. ;D
But I can say, it's one of the greatest script ever written with a suberb directing.

Roman Polanski's Chinatown is has some of the most stunning cinematography. This noiresque thriller is one of the greatest movie ever made much due to its dark multi layered script, few flicks can better and one of the best lead performances of all time given by Jack Nicholson.
  • May 7, 2008
All-around great acting and a great director at the helm make this almost as good as any of the classic private eye films of the 30's or 40's. The first of a proposed trilogy, though only two were ever made.
  • May 4, 2008
This is a really good noir film but it suffers from having an ending that wasn't as good as the rest of the flick.

this really is a sensational film. done in the noir style that brings back memories of the maltese falcon, the mystery was well plotted and the story well told. the twists were alot of fun and the acting was superb across the board. the only thing keeping me from giving this f...( read more)ilm a higher score is the dissapointing way the film closed. the final 10 minutes sort of fell through the bottom of the rest of the film. in many ways the film had to end that way to provide a context for why nicholson's character has bad feelings about chinatown, but the fittingness of the end doesnt take away the sting of its silliness and anti-climatic nature. still overall truly great and understandably considered one of the great films in history.
