Plot: In the next century, a reconfiguring ship (think "Transformer" with a pilot) called Macross carries fifty thousand refugees within its hold as it returns to Earth pursued by giant humanoid warriors. A...( read more read more... ) young pilot in the military named Hikaru rescues his idol, the beautiful singer Lynn Minmay, from the giants as they break through the ship's hull during a concert-during which the giants are shocked to see females on a male vessel-and they are trapped for days in an aft hold of the ship. After their rescue, Hikaru and Minmay continue on good terms until a joyride in a fighter trainer gets Hikaru, his squadron leader, Minmay's brother, Minmay herself and the tough female operations controller captured by the giants, who grill them on how males and females can survive together without fighting. The giants' female counterparts arrive to wreak havoc on their male foes, and in the ensuing confusion Minmay and her brother are detained while the others make an escape that costs squadron leader Roy Focker his life and strands Hikaru and commander Misa Hayase on a now-totally-lifeless Earth, which leads to revelations on all three sides of the conflict regarding their past and future as well as the origins of mankind and the power of love and song, while Hikaru tangles with his feelings for both Misa and Minmay and all builds toward a final battle between the Macross and both giant fleets...

Those familiar with Robotech will know that Macross is the original version of the first section of Robotech. Macross was a great show that got hacked to bits so Harmony Gold could make some quick cash off of the 80s anime boom. Macross was so much more than a saturday morning cartoon, it was a romance story masquerading as a space opera, and it was very well done considering the problems that plagued its production.

A.D. 2009: The human race is in the middle of a three-way war with a race of giant humanoid aliens split into the Zentrans (males) and Meltlans (females). After executing a space fold that sent it and part of South Ataria Island to the edge of the Solar System, the space fortress Macross is on its way back to Earth. During a small skirmish with Zentradi forces, young pilot Hikaru Ichijyo rescues idol singer Lynn Minmay and their relationship develops as they?re stranded somewhere within the ship. But shortly after returning to Macross City, Minmay is captured by the Zentradi, and Hikaru and female officer Misa Hayase end up back on Earth?only to view the aftermath of the destruction of their civilization. Only a song discovered eons ago?along with Minmay?s voice?can determine the outcome of the war.

this is essentially a retelling of the TV series down in a classic Hollywood style, and IMO it surpasses the series. As much as I love that show, this was just so much better. Unfortunately, this was only licensed on Dubbed and Edited VHS a long time ago. Harmony Gold started a big legal battle with Big West, Studio Nue, and Tatsunoko studios over who had the US distribution rights for all things DYRL?, and as a result the winner Big West has decided that no Macross will be licensed in the US after HG?s license runs out. So no DYRL? for us sadly, but there are fansubbed versions that can be acquired, thankfully.

An animation with a good mixture of sci-fi and romance. Extremely well done for an 80's animation.

The story is really deep, which means you need to pay attention to understand everything. It is a bit tough in the beginning, but as the movie progresses everything falls into place and it is easier to understand.

The pace of the film moves quite slowly, but it isn't entirely boring. There is good character development and a love triangle angle to keep things steamy. The science fiction aspect seems a little cheesy at first, but you come to realize how great it is when you see the ending that results from it.

The action is good, but there is definitely room for more. The robotic fights are fast and intense. The way that the "microns" fire their missile clusters is absolutely brilliant. The ending is filled with everything you expect in a full out space fight and it is executed nicely. The blood factor is low, which may be a let down to some people, but most of the action does involve ships and robots. When it comes down to it, the explosions are all you need. The sound effects are great for an 80s film and they still do sound pretty good to this day.

Visually this film looks good. I've seen better, but it is nicely done for its time. The same can be said for the original Japanese voice over work.

In the end, this film will cater to science fiction and romantic animation fanatics. My only gripe is that the romance takes a front seat over the action. Still, that is no reason to not watch this.

I think this is THE Macross saga from the 80s ("Do You Remeber Love?). If so, this was awesome. At the time, this was far far far and away the best animation I'd ever seen. Spelbinding. The story is cheesy, but decent and the concept was cool. Truly stunning animation. I'd love to see this on tv again (I watched the series again on dvd a few years back thanks to a friend's collection!).
