Christmas in Connecticut

Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, Dick Elliott, Frank Jenks, Joyce Compton

War hero Dennis Morgan becomes the object of a publicity stunt staged by magazine publisher Sidney Greenstreet. The corpulent print mogul announces that Morgan has won a Christmas dinner, to be prepar...( read more  read more... )ed by the magazine's housekeeping expert Barbara Stanwyck in her own Connecticut home. The catch: Not only does Stanwyck not have a home in Connecticut, but she's never been in a kitchen in her life! She also doesn't have a husband (as her articles claim), so Stanwyck's erstwhile beau Reginald Gardiner is pressed into service as the hubby. As for the cooking, that will be handled by master chef S. Z. Cuddles Sakall. This solves everything, right? No way, Jose. Long dismissed as a lesser film farce, Christmas in Connecticut has its own irresistible charm, and has in recent years become a perennial Christmas-eve TV attraction. Pay absolutely no attention to the 1992 TV remake, starring Dyan Cannon and directed by Arnold Schwarzenegger.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

this is a cute and fluffy comedy stanwyck made on the heels of double indemnity that has become a holiday perennial. babs plays a martha stewart type super homemaker, only she isn't. her hospitality is put to the test by a war hero (dennis morgan) and the owner of the magazine ...( read more)she writes for, played by sydney greenstreet. there are some funny bits, including babs trying to figure out how to diaper a baby.

Christmas in Connecticut from 1945 starring Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, and Sydney Greenstreet is a true holiday classic, This is one of two of my all time fav Xmas flims (the other being White Xmas).

It is a true feel good movie and the cast is wonderful as well.

It was okay; best in the beginning, and it went progressively downhill from there. I could do without this in my annual must see Xmas movies.

This has been my favorite movie for many years now, I love the lightness to it, Barbara Stanwyck is perfectly cast and excellent, the supporting cast is outstanding. Very funny, warm and wonderful.

Maybe if it were written by a much punchier dialogue-y writer this one might've fared better. Oh Babs is smashing and Dennis Morgan is dreamy and the concept is fun and the basic plot is cool... but the jokes are too flat and at the end of the day for a Christmas movie only mildl...( read more)y heart warming.

love Barbara Stanwyck, and the story fits in perfectly with its schmaltzy holiday contemporaries, but I wasn't especially heart-warmed or awe-struck. the dialogue feels like it was written by a 16-year-old for all its painful awkwardness. certainly an entertaining film with a f...( read more)un cast and a clever plot, but I just couldn't seem to get past the sub-par writing...

I dig it, it's kinda like an episode of Three's Company without the sex jokes.
