Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, based on the popular series of books by Darren Shan, is a fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring f...( read more  read more... )actions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares. 16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That's the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty. Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what's left of his humanity.

In yet another adaptation from book to film come Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. If you haven't noticed that we're living in a current vampire craze, you must be living under a rock--or perhaps in a coffin of your own. Although, The Vampire's Assistant is, thankfully, a...( read more) movie about blood-suckers geared toward the thumb-sucker crowd.

As two best friends are forced to be "secret" best friends due to ridiculous societal pressure, the ties that bond are strained between the two young boys. Steve is, decidedly, a "bad boy" who comes from a broken home and revels in acting irresponsibly. Ultimately, though, he has a heart of gold and should be deemed to be harmless and misunderstood. On the other hand, you have Darren; a straight-laced boy who comes from a well-to-do family and well-bred background with nothing really going for him except for what his parents expect of him--which is a lot.

When they fatefully come across a flying invitation to a freak show circus; the two boys are enthralled to break the rules and attend the midnight event. So they do. And what they find is a truly freakish collection of exhibits that includes a real-life lizard boy (Patrick Fugit); a rib-less man (Orlando Jones) and a beautiful bearded lady (Salma Hayek) among others.

But the real star of the show is John C. Reilly, who proves again just what a versatile actor he really is. He inhabits the role of Larten Crepsley, the #1 vampire of the cirque du freak. His abilities as vampire supreme are unmatched except by those evil vampires he is against. The clan that feeds off of people for the pleasure of it instead of for sustenance. Darren is forced to become a "half-vampire" in order to protect his friend Steve--who has gone to the dark side.

Although the vampire elements are decidedly dialed-down for this teen-geared movie; the thrills are still in full force. The story is full of quirky gags and whimsical little pockets of delightful humor, camp, art direction and dialogue. And, even though this film is Twilight-for-the-guys; it's really a lot better than Twilight by dint of this movie's self-awareness and intentional camp. Twilight actually thinks it's a great vampire film. The Vampire's Assistant doesn't care if it or not.

Scattered fantasy about a sideshow vampire who turns a teenager into one of the undead. Film adaptation unwisely crams the first three books of Darren Shan's book series into one film. As a result the film's narrative lacks structure. The plot fluctuates throughout the course ...( read more)of the film. Is it horror, comedy, drama, or adventure? Unfortunately we are never sure. Apparently neither was the cast. The main characters behave in frustratingly illogical ways, and numerous supporting cameos by famous actors are an annoying distraction. In short, the film is a confusing mess.

a little bit of teenage fun in the night, the wish fulfillment answer to the teenage question "what if you got really cool friends?"...salma hayek sizzles of course (and when does she not?)

I went 2 see it on the 1st night it came out... i thought it was amazing and so did my 3 friends i went to see it with. I thought that the cast was amazing & they could not have chosen better ! Chris Massoglia was an amazing lead...i didn't like him at the begin with but as the m...( read more)ovie went on i leaned to love him and i realized why he was chosen for the role as he was a really good Darren ! I haven't seen any films with John C. Reilly in before but i thought he was a very good choice for the part of Mr Crepsley. I imagined that he would be more serious but instead they went for the funny side of him and i thought it was a great choice ! I think that Jessica Carlson was very good as Rebecca the monkey girl(for the people who have read the book she's Debby.) and her and Chris had really good chemistry ! Salma Hayek was a very good choice for Truska the bearded lady ! Me and my friends immediately liked her...she was amazing. They couldn't have chosen any-one better ! Now...my favourite person in the whole film was Josh Hutcherson as Steve. I have been a massive fan of Josh's and i think this has been his best film yet ! He is very good a Steve ! He brings out the dark side of himself and it makes you believe that he is actually very evil !

The only thing bad i have to say about the film is towards the end (don't read this bit if u don't want to know about it. and if u haven't read the books.) Me and my friends where saying that we thought that it was going to put all of the films together as Darren goes home and he finds the poster for the ciqure and there was a not saying "see you at the theatre." now this confused me because in the last book Darren and Steve have there final showdown in the theatre. Also it seemed as though they didn't know where to end it. It seemed like it was going to finish in one place than they go to somewhere else

Other than that it's a very good film...very good !

Darren Shan: So do I have other powers, like can I turn into a bat and stuff?
    Larten Crepsley: No. That's Bullshit.

Is it weird that much of my main desire to see this movie was based on seeing John C. Reily as a red headed vampire? Well, even though I didn't actually pay to...( read more) see this movie, I can say that I was satisfied with what Reily brought to this movie as well as this big mess of a film as a whole.

Based on another book series that I've never heard of, the film is set in a world where vampires exist, as well as a variety of creatures, freaks, werewolves, etc. The main plot involves two best friends who become hero and anti hero, as both eventually become vampires and learn their destinies.

John C. Reily is Larten Crepsley, a vampire who practices only sipping blood but not killing the host, resides with a traveling freak show and becomes the Obi Wan to the hero character Darren. Reily is who I wanted to see in this movie, and he delivers. He is having a lot of fun with this role and has all the best lines in the movie.

Larten Crepsley: What is Code Blue:

The rest of the movie is a big jumble of special effects, choppy action, some welcome dark humor, and exposition setting up future sequels, assuming this film makes enough money. However, similar to The Golden Compass (which I did enjoy) I doubt we're going to see more from this series.

The freak/vampire cast does include a good number of faces, including Salma Hayek, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Fugit, Ken Watanabe, Orlando Jones, and Ray "I kicked as in Rome but not so much as the Punisher" Stevenson. All these supporting characters do what they can, certainly making up for the bland male teens in the lead parts.

The effects, for the most part and given the tone and subject matter are pretty good. I enjoy some of the new vampire tricks for this film, as well as the overall style that this film tried to develop.

So there isn't a lot to recommend here. I really enjoyed Reily and I was kept entertained throughout, with its sense of humor and where the story went. It is really cheesy though and doesn't bring much new besides being a vampire's version of the hero's journey.

Larten Crepsley: What are you an idiot? I'm not going to bite you in your jugular. I could kill you that way.

One of the better movies out since last years Harry Potters: Goblet of Fire. Good adaptation from book to screen sofor up to par with Twilight and The Pirates Franshise. Finally a Childs movie with a story line and a plot.
