Plot: The suicide of a clergyman makes an old curse come true. The gate to hell opens and the dead goes up from her tombs as zombies.
if those gates are left open, it could mean the end of humanity. We've got to get them shut again. At midnight on Monday, we go into All Saint's Day. The night of the dead begins. If the portholes of hell aren't shut before, no dead body will ever rest in peace. The dead will rise up all over the world and take over the Earth! You must get to Dunwich, Mr. Bell. You must reclose those gates!
The first work of the Fulci 'Trilogia della Morte' (which also includes 'The Beyond' and 'The House by the Cemetery') is surely the most extreme and disturbing among the three.
A tale of curses and living dead, with Catholic connotations, which takes its inspiration from Lovecraft, Poe and Romero. A cool mix of dark, foggy and claustrophobic atmospheres with some crude, sometimes disgusting, gory effects, that leave no space for imagination: we have heads drilled, brains ripped out, eyes crying blood, bowels vomited out, maggot storms, people buried alive... A feast for the eyes for gore fans!
The story is quite incoherent and without a logic, but it takes a back seat to the creepy, delirious and visionary atmosphere. The amazing cinematography and scenography with some gothic elements, the rough but effective special effects and the gruesome make-up, plus the suggestive score by Fabio Frizzi, make this movie one of the best italian horror cults. Keep in mind that everything was made with a really small budget.
Fulci goes cool, violent, gory, scary and wild again. He really knows how to make SCARY HORROR films and this is just another fine example. It is not his best film (The Beyond [1981] and Zombi 2 (1979) are better zombie/horror films) but this will surely entertain and please hardcore Fulci and horror fans. A must for those people (like me :D). Loved the drill scene.
75/100
I almost want to give this four stars just for the clever violence, gore and the generally creepy vibe of the movie, but the silly acting and non-existent plot demand I give it a mere three. Still, definitely worth a look, if you like a good gross-out.
this movie wasnt to bad the chick that cried blood then puked her bowels up was crazy! but other then that its got major slow parts and the ending is weird oh ya and its got a maggot storm! LOL
Some scenes are so macabre, disgusting & gory. This film it so scary & very creepy. The girl crying blood gave me chills.
this is lucio fulci at his most macabre, in my opinion. a town haunted by a priest that hangs himself in the beginning of the movie? that's fucking brutal.
It's not really coherent, but it is very gory and definitely has a dark and creep atmosphere. The gore is great, very gross and realistic. Some gore scenes are really unforgettable.
One of Lucio Fulci's scariest and best supernatural horror flicks! the Ghost/zombie hybrid creatures are very effective and the gore effects are memorable such as the absolutely stomach churning literal gut vomiting scene.
this is one of Fulcis better ones.every thing has already been said about this flick all I can say is I'll never forget seeing that drill run through that guys head .I was a young kid when i seen that and i still remember it today.
The second film in Lucio Fulci's notorious 'zombie quartet' (after Zombie Flesh Eaters) has a dark and creepy atmosphere and some memorably over the top gore set-pieces but it lacks the pace of some of his other horror movies.
The strangest thing for me about this film is that it seems as thought I understood it better when I was a child. It was definitely scarier, but also seemed more lucid, especially the ending -- at one point in my life, I swear I knew why everyone's reunion smiles suddenly turn into screaming terror, but now I'm as clueless and confused as any other viewer. At least one thing did not change over the years: the gore and it's impact remain strong and thick at any age, and John Morgan's death by drill is still an amazing technical accomplishment by any standards.
Greatest death scene ever. Decent movie otherwise, but like any Fucli, very heavy on the well done gore.
Not Fulci's best, but I though it whas a better alternative to The Beyond, not as gory, and not nearly as scary, but the zombies where awesome, the plot where thrilling and, well, I musn't forget the intestine-vomiting scene.
"When the moon turns red the dead shall rise.
And the dead shall rise and walk the earth!
From the bowels of the earth they came to collect the living..."
One of the most Graphical Horror movies to date, Lucio Fulci has that perfect type of directing to make zombie movies; he knows how to make it grotesque and outrageous while keeping it smart and slick.
The real problem is that it's a film in a huge package with very little inside, and what is inside isn't impressive at all; trying to overcome its physical restrictions and resulting in a laughable spectacle.
The story is void of the simple charm that was present in Fulci's other works, and instead, it became a cliché of gore and overly complex plot points that succeeded in overdoing itself.
There are eventually zombies, (if one can call them that.) They're more like Goths that look like zombies. Anyway, the small amount of movie time that they're actually present doesn't have any impact; many of the deaths in the movie aren't of the undead variety (in fact, one of the most infamous gore scenes in the movie comes from a vengeful father). The only mass slaughter by the walking dead is in a bar of rednecks, whose sole point in the film is hilariously underdeveloped and unnecessary comic relief that further takes away from the movie. If all this wasn't bad enough, these few scenes of action and gore are few and far between and only come into full force near the end of the movie, culminated in an ending that introduces new and puzzling questions instead of answering the ones already introduced.
A horror movie should consist of an acknowledged threat that is quickly introduced, and the rest of the film is the subsequent stalking and terror that this threat unleashes. This movie, however, has half of its duration dedicated to the former portion, trying to develop an overly ridiculous plot that probably wouldn't work anyway.
Fulci's genius doesn't shine here; his weaknesses that his detractors point out are the only things in full force.
My Final say is: Drink less [than six shots of vodka], you'll be bored with the nonsensical plot. Drink more, you'll probably puke when you see a girl in the literally barfing her guts out.
Not bad, there were some scenes I wondered how they carried it out, like the blood in the eyes, and the editing just makes you lose your mind. But there was something that bothered me, it tried to be a cheap thrill and a serious horror show at times, especially around the Bob character. He was hounded like the witches were in the past, prejudiced and so on, but he bolts when a woman comes to see him. Then his head is cut off by a father whose daughter was with him and apparently was in some relationship. They then show him back and he eats them. I don't know, it sort of looked like some message on prejudice and past crimes, and coul've been a good one, but it looked a bit messy, but overall, it was still an excellent movie, for pure gore.
I think I saw a cut version of this, in which case I wouldn't have felt the full 'benefit' (if it can be called that) of the notoriously high blood/gore count. But the acting and direction is very very poor.
A news reporter and supernatural zombie gore? If there is one thing about Fulci, he's at least consistent. Pretty much the only thing that I remember from this movie was a girl vomiting up all of her organs. Sure, it doesn't sound as great as "this had a decent plot", but it beats all the kind things I said about Humanoids from the Deep. Honestly, have a fucking squid man that shoots a rocket out of his chest, the movie doesn't make sense, so why not?! As for City of the Living Dead, nothing super special. In my opinion better than The Beyond, worse than House by the Cemetery.
Really Awful! But such unique gore! I don't think I've ever seen a victim vomit their own intestines before!
Creepy, gory, and atmospheric. In other words, everything Fulci does well, but really nothing else. Nothing else... like acting. Or plot.
Lucio Fulci is a horror icon. He may not be as well known to many film goers in North America as his iconic status was cemented some twenty years ago, but if you like films by Wes Craven and M. Night Shyamalan and even David Fincher, then you can look at Fulci and say that his work has inspired some of theirs. This is the firs film that I saw of Fulci's and it was when I was a teenager and didn't appreciate a film like this. All I saw in it was a blood and gore soaked film with some really violent deaths. How can one forget the drill to the head? To this day, I still think that actor was actually killed on the set? They really did put the drill bit through his brain and captured it on film for artistic integrity.
I am obviously kidding of course, but is the effect the film will have on you. Films like this are brutal and disgusting and if you like horror films that are high on gore, then Fulci and his counterpart, Argento, are the best in the business. I have always found Italian splatter films to be awe inspiring. They are so much more creative than your typical American horror films. That has changed into the new millennium, but there is still nothing like this on the market. Fulci's films, like Craven's 70's films, would be edited and chopped to bits before anything like this would ever be released. And that is a travesty as the vision and the creativity involved in making a film like this not only takes gusto, it takes talent. Fulci is about as good as they come for this genre.
This is what I wrote in my original review of the film. This is when I was in my mid 20's. I have seen the film recently and obviously my appreciation of the film has increased.
"Gates To Hell ( English translation ) is very amateurishly made. It is lacking in the acting and the directing is choppy. But what this film is and what it does is it epitomizes horror and terror. There are really disgusting scenes of brains being eaten, guts being puked up, a drill to the head ( one of favourites ) and lots of blood, guts and tissue. This film uses the fear of religious unknowns and uses that fear brilliantly. It shows us and truly makes us feel what it must be like to feel pain. Real pain. Not the comic violence that you get from Jason and Freddy. But real disgusting terror as you watch people die in heinous ways."
Times change and now I love the film even more. Fulci is a visionary genius and his Gates to Hell is one of the most innovative horror films to come out of any country. This is a must see for every horror fan.
I am just learning about Italian horror. But if this is what the horror genre is all about, then I want to see more of it. Fulci is one of a kind and I don't think there will be another like him. This is his best work. Check it out.
