In this sequel, Billy Crystal returns as city guy turned cowboy, searching for the gold that a man named Curly, (the legendary Jaxk Palance), left buried in the desert.
The first was a smart movie about mid-life crisis and guys bonding. The characters in this one are looking for money and it the movie was just made...for more money. Plus Jon Lovitz was a bad replacement for the late great Bruno Kirby who was great in the original.
Still the movie does have some charm and heart despite the awful plot. The late great Jack Palance steals the show once again even if it doesn't work that Curly has a twin brother.
The second part of City Slickers begins after the death of Curly. It is the 40th birthday of Mitch Robbins and the day begins quite good until he returns home (after a hard day at the radio station) and finds his brother Glen, the black sheep of the family, in his sofa. Nevertheless he is about to have a wonderful birthday-night with his wife when he discovers a treasure map of Curly by chance. Together with Phil (from the first part) and unfortunately with Glen he tries to find the hidden gold of Curly's father in the desert of Arizona instead of attending a meeting in Las Vegas. The adventurous journey reveals many surprises until everything seems to be over when the map gets lost...
A film that just took all that was good in the first movie and threw it back in our faces making a complete mess and in some ways spoiling all the magic of the first film. Billy Crystal really missed the mark making this film.
A bit of an insult to the original movie if you want my opinion. I would ask what the cast were thinking - but it's obvious they were just thinking about the paycheck. At least Bruno Kirby had the good sense to stay away.
Loved the first, liked the second. More of the same comedic wit from the first but it just didn't feel as original. Billy Crystal is hella funny though.
I practically grew up with these films, my family used to watch City Slickers 1 & 2 all the time at home. Though, if I remember correctly, was this one better than the prequel? It's been so long since, I may have to watch them again soon. But anyway, this movie is highly entertaining and utterly hilarious, and to me, a 'western' classic.
Haha, I just the love the scenes when they're in the cave, I always laugh like hell.
If you didn't see the first City Slickers, you won't have to worry at all about being lost; this sequel can stand on its own.
City Slickers II takes characters Mitch Robbins, his friend Phil, and brother Glen on a treasure hunt in the wild west. On his 40th birthday, Mitch accidentally finds a treasure map hidden in Curly's hat, which he acquired following Curly's death in the first film. They discover that the map allegedly shows the location of gold from a train heist pulled by Curly's father.
Along the way to an area near Las Vegas, Nevada, they run into a bit of trouble from Curly's twin brother, Duke. A few of them almost see their lives flash before them, only to discover more than one surprise at the end.
The film has a few good gags in it, including one which was taken from Paul Hogan's Lightning Jack (don't worry if you haven't seen it), but not really any that make you jump out of your seat.
The acting in the film is about average. Billy Crystal (City Slickers, Mr. Saturday Night, The Princess Bride) has a few good lines, but seemed funnier as the host of the Oscars. Daniel Stern (City Slickers, Home Alone, Rookie of the Year) as Phil has the best and funniest lines in the movie, considering he was playing a more normal character here than in some of his other films. Jon Lovitz (Saturday Night Live, A League of Their Own) really bombs in this film and is funnier in any interviews he does with talk-show hosts.
Judging from pure acting talent alone, Jack Palance (Batman, City Slickers) was at his best, even though it almost seems the only reason they gave Curly a brother was so they could have Palance in the sequel.
This review was originally published with my byline in The Ottawa Citizen in June 1994.
What's the only thing better than ONE Jack Palance? That would be TWO Jack Palances. A beautiful convention that is later stolen by BEERFEST when Landfill comes back!
The RARE occasion when the sequal proved to be better than the original. Better story? NO! But the addition of Jon Lovitz as Billy Crystal's pain-in-the-ass little brother, Glen, is side splitting!
I didn't miss Bruno Kirby and they kept Daniel Stern as Phil and brought back Jack Palance as Curly's twin, Duke. I didn't think it could get any better than the first one but I LOVE THIS ONE EVEN MORE!!!
Excellent movie, wish I could find a map like that eh? Hehe *is this real?" "its got friends!" *come and get me come and get me!* thats from the last part of the flick if ya didn't know :P
This was really funny, I liked the part where Billy Crystal's character thought curly had come back from the grave when it was his twin brother he saw.
