Plot:
In the opening scene of this thoroughly mindless action flick, a psycho holds a group of terrified hostages in a grocery store, and yells to renegade cop Marion Cobretti (Sylvester Stallone) that he's...( read more
)
One of Stallone's worst movies, which is saying something. Stallone plays a renegade cop, who is so cool that when he gets into a gun fight with someone in the dark he doesn't take off his sunglasses. He is trying to protect a witness who has witnessed a murder. The murderer is part of some cult, who must spend a lot of time of choreography, lighting, and dancing by the look of their little hideout. Every crook is a sniveling creep and you can't help and look at this movie with a open mouthed "What were they thinking" expression.
.... undecided on whether i want to see this desparately or whether i want to avoid it at alll costs
I have rarely seen anything after the pizza thing, but at least that moment almost made it worth my time.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Damn, what a fucking movie. I'll take bullshit 80s action flicks over most of the crap that passes for action these days. This really has it all, bad hair, bad clothes, bad robots, bad music, and a ridiculous posturing tough guy hero.
Fucking class.
a great stallone flick, one of the most badass action stars ever. Also it has a shitload of great one-liners
One of the better 80's Action movies.
Cobretti is a badass. I remember going Trick or Treating as this character.
Another one produced by the Cannon boys, but this one is distributed by Warner Bros.
It even had a video game with no ending after you fought the big boss.
"This is where the law stops...and I begin!"
It was never meant to be a brilliant Shakespearean drama, it was never meant to take itself too seriously and it was never made with the intention of making something groundbreaking...so take Cobra for what it is: Stallone in his prime with a gun in hand and a tonne of bad guys waiting for him to kill.
The 80's action genre is one that I am a massive fan of; the simplicity of the plots and no complex plot turns means that you can sit back and have a fun time without experiencing anything that will alter your life.
Stallone plays a veteran cop nicknamed Cobra who is part of the "zombie squad". Cobra is renowned for his quick and violent dispatches of those who deserve it. As the film opens we are made fully aware of this as he uses guns and cheesy one-liners. A serial killer rattles the city with a series of killings of random civilians. Cobra isn't allowed to be a part of the investigation, but doesn't take 'no' for an answer.
Of course, this serial killer plot is an excuse to fill the screen with non-stop violence, and let the body count rise in traditional Stallone style. The plot is thin and pretty much dissipates as the film becomes nothing more than an entertaining slaughter and mindless entertainment.
Of course Stallone's performance is far from perfect (in fact it's quite terrible in places) but he is in great shape and delivers the action we've come to expect from these kinds of movies. Like Arnie, Van Damme and Chuck Norris; Sly loves the formula of making wafer thin plots with lame one-liners and awesome action. He does not disappoint on this front.
It's very predictable as well, not to mention the startling number of conventional characters that appear. For example Stallone is the only intelligent cop, all the rest of the police on the force are complete dummies. The film is also highly clichéd and contains an array of quite embarrassing performances.
Director George P. Cosmatos teams up with Sly once again to create a very Rambo reminiscent production. If this film was marketed as a Rambo sequel and had battles of a larger scale then you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It's films like these that got Stallone type-cast. Films as mindless and as entertaining as Cobra are just never released anymore these days.
Full of violence, action and gore; in short, if you love action movies then hire this one without hesitation. Lots of fun, but it's not a masterpiece.
The portuguese dubbing of "Cobra" is a classic. The original is also a classic. The movie is so terrible and testosterone-inflicted that we laugh all the time!
Enjoyable Sly action romp. Some funny continuity errors to look out for. Brigitte Nielsen showed why Sly fell for her in the first place. She looked good in this movie.
Where is anything in this film? The plot was almost non-existent and was simply replaced with random violence (which wasn't necessarily bad...). You hardly got to know the characters and when you did get to know something about the characters, it was announced for 2 seconds. For a film about a crazy cult and a cop, this was pretty disappointing.
Finest unintentional comedy ever made. Everything wrong with the eighties or everything right with the eighties?
Oh oh, something tells me this might have a sequel in a near future. Considering Stallone wants to revive every single character/movie he has made. So start getting ready for another Demolition Man flick, another Over the Top, and another...Stop or My mom will shoot.
Maybe i don't miss the 80's that much.
Silly but, fun 80's action flick starring Stallone. It's one of those movies where everything but, the action scenes are bad. Not that the action scenes are great (I haven't seen this movie in six years) but, at least they are fun.
Not a captivating story and not much suspense, but there are some good action sequences. Also, is it just me or does Brigitte Nielsen look like a maniquine in this movie?
I like the fact that he looked like he was in such good shape but only survived on little slices of pizza.
At times with the way this is edited it feels like watching a long music video. The story is crap as is the acting but it's still worth watching for the action and music. Sly tries to deliver the one liners the way Arnie does but it just doesn't work for him.
Marion Cobretti is a cop. A cop who doesn't play by the "rules". A cop who gets results. A cop who dresses like a male stripper. A cop who is clearly in love with his car and probably jerks off over copies of Guns & Ammo. The villains are a collection of killers who casually slaughter everyone in their way, conveniently removing any need for a plot or characterisation so a Sly untroubled by thought or conscience can just throw enough ordnance at them to invade the continental USA, while the surrounding traffic spontaneously explode into balls of flame. Brigitte Nielsen (another of cinema's finest acting talents) is also on hand to model a series of crimes against fashion to a horrific AOR rawk ballad, intercut with a montage of gratuitous violence while the bad guy sharpens his weapon. This laughably offensive testosterone-soaked tripe is one of the worst examples of 80s tackiness around, and is so inane and simplistic it could easily be mistaken for a spoof. At least Arnie would've injected a little humour into the proceedings; Stallone just made it a bone-headed ego-trip that makes Rocky IV look positively sophisticated.
Only a Sylvester Stallone movie can be this bad. I'm just saying Brando would not have the catch pharse Crime is a disease. Meet The Cure. Why did you have to have a post Rocky Career?
Incredibly bad. The kind of "action" movie where good guys and bad guys give 5 minute tirades to each other at gun point before deciding to actually fire their weapons. Boring. Stupid. Must I go on?
Cobra is a Classic Stallone Actioner in which he plays a Cop taking on A Gang of ruthless killers.Great Action Scenes as Sly is sent in to take them on and protect a witness (Brigiette Nielsen). The running time is a little short but they dont make Really Good Action Movies like Cobra anymore and u gotta love his name Marion Cobretti--Too Cool! One of my Fav Movies...
