There was a time when superstitions ran free and were clear as a full moon curse. Ancient god-worship/devil-fear teachings became printed in blood and procreated throughout time and generations. How far does this beliefs distance from the non-spiritual point of view and how much ...( read more)can you - the non-believer - be affected by past tales and bad omens...? I loved the feeling during all the movie...so simple and so real. Those scared faces... The landscapes are superb, and the starring house were most of the "action" occurs is nothing but an eerie monument of confrontation between "modern flesh" and "ancient soul". At fucking last a decent horror/thriller movie from Portugal, which knew well how to explore the vast religious-devil-fearing culture and all those unique hunting places that grew forgotten by all. Expect no fancy plastic pretty faces or hollywood wannabe crap. This is raw and IT IS supposed to be raw as primal incarnated fear.

Released in America under the title "Bad Blood", "Coisa Ruim" is slow-burning Gothic horror from that little country called Portugal. The genre is rarely explored now-a-days, especially in Portugal, so it is nice to see a return to this forgotten realm, even if the film itself is...( read more) flawed.

The film's greatest strength lies in its atmosphere. The directors - Tiago Guedes and Frederico Serra - utilize long takes, slow moving dollys, and extended periods of silence to perpetual build an eerie sense of ominous and foreboding dread. In addition, the atmosphere - coupled with its slow-paced narrative - creates a very somber and melancholy tone that adds a deeper sense of emotion that is often absent from horror films.

However, as I just mentioned, the film's pacing is glacial to say the least, and avoids any shocks or scares, which may frustrate those looking for a more frightening experience. Instead, the film is very subtle, focusing upon the psychological underpinnings of the characters, making it have a richer subtext.

Unfortunately, this focus upon the characters and their relationships, though good, sadly limits the development of the narrative. The story certainly has an incredibly strong sense of mystery, thanks mainly to it's eerie atmosphere and moments of the surreal, but the payoff is severely lacking. The build up is great, thus the viewer expects quite a bit, but the revelation is very simplistic and obvious, and thus we are left asking, "That's it?" It was nice to see that the ending still avoided overt shocks from a more subtle denouement, but with such an incredible build up the ending can not help but be a let down.

As a result, the film is more unnerving than frightening, depressing rather than exhilarating, and somber rather than thrilling.

It was a pleasant throwback to the horror of yore, more emotionally complex than most, but ends up being much ado about nothing.

Still, recommended for those who enjoy horror in the classic ghost story mode.

Slow moving, great acting and contains a few chills but the ending was unforgiving.

The story is good and the tension is well built but, as usuall, there is no action and when you watch it on TV, late at night with two comercial breaks in the meadle, you risk yourself to falling asleep before the ending... that was what happened to me. I missed the end :(

A very interesting movie, especially considering the lack of tradition of Portuguese cinema on the horror/thriller genre. Interesting characters on a oh so familiar setting, the countryside, full of ancient superstitions and old-wives tales. Moody and slow-paced, it delivers the...( read more) good plot with a good timing without feeling rushed. It's not complex and ambitious, which proves itself to be a good choice, because it's able to accomplish the objectives proposed by the filmmaker and writers.

Coisa [mesmo nada] Ruim, uma abertura à mente tacanha e mesquinha do que se pensa ser e o que realmente é.

"Há uma dor que atravessa os tempos em busca de vingança!"

A mix between Shyamalan´s "The Village" and Amébabar´s "The Others". Considering the portuguese film history, this suspense semi-terror movie came to me as a surprise. Trivia: the screenplay was written by a well known tv journalist, Rodrigo Guedes de Carvalho; it was the first p...( read more)ortuguese film ever to open the "Fantasporto Festival".
