  Thanks to Walter, this interview of investigative reporter Michael Ruppert did finally bubble up my netflix queue, and I've just watched it. Whether you buy into Ruppert's multi-faceted vision of our future or not, you really should ask yourself one question: Do you believe the world supply of oil is infinite? If you do believe it is, then you may not derive much from watching this documentary. If, however, you believe that our oil supply is limited, then you cannot possibly walk away from this film with nothing to ponder. <p>I'm an old guy. I'm probably within ten years, give or take, of Ruppert's age. I've seen many of the things he's seen, heard many of the things he's heard. Yes, the world we live in is not Disneyland, corruption of many kinds and at many levels is a fact, resources of all kinds are limited, the population is growing more quickly everyday -- <p> and I'm not doing enough to help work toward solutions of our many problems. <p> If any viewer of this film believes that, as the netflix envelope synopsis says, "Ruppert's monologue explains how the lies and political propaganda fed to Americans by big business will eventually lead to human extinction," then you and I have been watching this from two different perspectives. <p> After he breaks down on camera, Ruppert turns a corner. His repeated use of the word "hope" is what I choose to carry away from this film. <p> I admit it: I'm as lazy and self-centered and paranoid as the next person, I guarantee you. But I do believe -- and maybe this is an old-guy thing as well -- that if I make efforts in the direction of thinking about one or two people other than myself, and if I keep getting up off my a** to make a small gesture toward the good of other people, and if I can actually spend a few seconds, from time to time, thinking about the world that future generations will inherit, that I might actually do something, no matter how feeble, that may make the state of the world move in a positive direction. <p>Of course my primary problem is that I'm an idiot -- certainly no self-proclaimed "critical thinker" -- as you can surely tell from everything I've said here so far, but I'm an idiot, I uncritically think, who's really attempting tiny half-a**ed efforts, when I'm not dozing off or eating bonbons, that I really hope will make a positive difference for us now, and for future generations. I'm almost 100% jaded at this point in my life, for real, but there still is a minuscule chink or two in my armor that allows HOPE to enter in to my thinking process. <p> Heaven help me, Ray Kurzweil.

  For a documentary, this is very good. Very informative and pretty interesting. Normally I don't like documentaries but this one really got my attention.

  In the documentary monologue "Collapse," Michael Ruppert comes off as an eloquent and intelligent speaker(I also seem to remember him from the documentary "The End of Suburbia" where he also talked about peak oil.), delivering a serious warning about the critical state of natural resources. That, along with the economic collapse of 2008 that he predicted, leads him to predict a grave future for humanity in which not only oil will be depleted but also the infrastructure being abandoned for lack of funds. Of course, you should not believe everything you hear. To start, the economy works in cycles and can be managed in much the same way that a person suffering from bi-polar disorder can be. Despite his impressive credentials, I should point out that Ruppert tends to get obsessed with subjects like oil and the CIA selling drugs.(That reminds me, I just read an article in the New Yorker about new oil fields in North Dakota.) I'm not going to downplay the importance of oil but it is not the cause of the population explosion(which Thomas Malthus(1766-1934) predicted long before the advent of the internal combustion engine) nor the reason for the invasion of Iraq which would not have happened without 9/11. In reality, world events tend to be more random than anything and nothing proves this more than terrorism. Speaking of random events, he also claims many deaths as suspicious without proof. Sometimes a heart attack is just a heart attack.(If you want to read how to debunk a conspiracy, read "Case Closed" by Gerald Posner.) And hey Ruppert is still breathing and chain smoking.

  The pessimists' bible. Watch this film and you will be convinced that we are in for a miserable existence anticipating the 20-100 year transition period after the collapse of the capitalist system. Unfortunately Ruppert plants that seed in your mind that life may not have the anticipated ending that most people expect...and you think about it every time gas goes up at the pumps. Is this the start of Ruppert's collapse?

  I watched the documentary Collapse today, and I'm still not sure what to make of this little beast. Michael Ruppert, is the only man of the documentary, which was pretty much just a self driven multi-media interview. Ruppert claims to not be a conspirator, because he uses fact. But it feels like he's so obsessed and paranoid, that he convinces himself of these facts. He talked about the Bush administration and Dick Cheney with such fear, that it's convincing. He states in one point of the film that "he's not messiah", but he sure acted like a prophet at times. Smoking a cigarette while talking about organics and the chemicals in soil, feels a bit contradictory to me. The words flowed out with such confidence and with an egotistic tone, it became hard to believe a word he said. His ideas did match mine in some areas. When he was talking as a Malthusian, on oil and other natural resources, it was hard connect for me. It was to pessimistic when he would flat out state "it just will never work" on many of the solutions. I agree with the fundamentals, but to say buy seeds, invest in gold, get first aid books, sounds like a mix of Harold Camping and Glenn Beck to me. I did agree with him though on the sham that paper money is. Maybe some of what he says was true, but to think like he does, that every last thing he said was true, then we have a cult. The 100th monkey never came to create one though, and it's for the best. Even with my displeasure these were fascinating ideas. I always intrigued, and even if you're nowhere a Cassandra, it'll make you think. The Titanic philosophy did touch me on a personal point, mainly because I'd be the one saying "it won't sink". It was always watchable and always strong. No one's gonna meet with the guys ideas on everything, most won't like him, but most will listen. It might've been random rambling, it might've been true studies and statistics. There's a cover up, there always has been, but we're still here. In a hundred years the atrocity of the Clinton, Bush, and Obama years will be released. Just like it was for Ulysses S. Grant and Harding. Corruption is there, oil is a problem, revolts may take place, but is it how Ruppert says it is? No.

  The movie in summation is essentially, "Well, we are fucked. Unless we accept that civilization as we know it will no longer exist and just stop sucking as a species." Michael C. Ruppert is fascinating to listen to, and a lot of what he says seems very likely but then he offers little to no solutions. I understand he has written a book where he lines out solutions, but I'm not reviewing that. The movie taken by itself has some very interesting criticism, but that's easy proposing realistic solutions is what is hard and that is what we need now more than anything, rather than just another prophet of doom.
