Often improbable, sometimes ludicrous, but frequently exciting.
-
Nick Pinkerton, Village Voice
Possibly worth seeing if you are 13.
-
David Edelstein, New York Magazine
There's bad acting all around, but you can't fully blame the performers. The dialogue needed a writer to come in and punch it up - the lines sound like placeholders.
-
Tirdad Derakhshani, Philadelphia Inquirer
Colombiana isn't the last word in action movies, but it's a fun ride.
-
Wesley Morris, Boston Globe
Megaton blows things up, demolishes a fruit market, and throws in some parkour foot-chases as if he's completing a checklist.
-
Peter Howell, Toronto Star
Colombiana isn't completely dreadful, if you ignore the holes in its Swiss cheese of a plot.
-
R. L. Shaffer, IGN DVD
The action set pieces are elaborately staged and sometimes exciting, but the dull script, overcooked direction and wonky editing damage this otherwise enjoyable B-movie.
-
Chuck Bowen, Slant Magazine
Colombiana is a self-righteous misstep from the usually reliable Luc Besson action-film factory.
-
Greg Maki, Star-Democrat (Easton, MD)
"Colombiana" never even considers that what Cataleya has devoted her life to doing might not be entirely justified and that what she does might make her just as evil as the people who wronged her.
-
Linda Cook, KWQC-TV (Iowa)
A fast-paced tale of revenge, 'Colombiana' is a better-than-average actioner made all the more interesting by its female lead. Zoe Saldana ('Star Trek' and 'Avatar') follows the path of 'Hanna' and 'Salt' as a tough-as-nails assassin.

Overall, the movie has enough clever chases, break-ins, and escapes -- not to mention a sweet, small tragic romance -- to make it worthwhile, but this isn't one of Besson's stronger efforts.
-
Matt Singer, Time Out Chicago
Colombiana has one true asset -- the seminude sight of its star, Zoe Saldana -- and milks it for everything it's worth.
-
Shaun Munro, What Culture
A cynical mash-up of Besson's Leon and Nikita, though without their depth of character or emotional warmth.
-
Philip French, Observer [UK]
It's as slick as an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as fast-moving as hurricane Emily and as memorable as an episode of The A-Team.
-
Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph
Half the dialogue between these dirtbags is devoted to her near-invisibility, and all of it's awful: "She's like mist," apparently.
-
David Edwards, Daily Mirror [UK]
You'll find yourself laughing, then realise that it's not meant to be funny.
-
David Hughes, Empire Magazine
Even the talented Saldana can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear - much less a dog's dinner.
-
Jason Best, Movie Talk
Colombiana is every bit as slick and silly as you'd expect, but Saldana pulls off her far-fetched assassin with panache, whether wriggling through a police station's air ducts in a latex cat suit or dispatching a crook with his own pet sharks.

Luc Besson produced action films are always generally a bit of a guilty pleasure. They usually involve car chases, revenge and parkour too and Colombiana is no exception - except I liked it a little bit more. It doesn't have the humour that many of his other films have like Taxi and The Transporter (towards the end), it's quite serious throughout and better for it I think. It's no masterpiece but it's definitely got something special about it, there were even a few moments where I thought, could this be the new Nikita. It's no Nikita but it's definitely related and worth seeking out. -

Zoe was electric, but so many of the plot points just didn't make sense. It was Leon The Professional, but without the comic relief and heartwarming at its center. Without those two things, you end up with a cold, heartless, soulless homage to premeditated violence. -

A child witnesses the deaths of her parents right in front of her at the hands of a mobster, and, after she escapes, she trys to rebuild her life and vows revenge. That's it. For co-writer and producer Luc Besson, this is comfortable, familiar territory. He's become an old pro at being involved with films concerning tough attractive women out for revenge who use the profession of hired killer as a means of getting said revenge, This time around though, there's a lack of depth, development, and substance. If all you want to see (and nothing more) is Zoe Saldana looking hot, especially while kicking ass and taking names, then you should be happy. If you want a story or characters you care about ot go along with it, then you'll be disappointed. Saldana is fine with the action material, and she's becoming more credible with this type of thing. However, when her character actually has moments of vulnerability and she's supposed to get emotional, they don't work becuase the character isn't well developed, and the audience doesn't connect with her or but those scenes. I think it's because the film never takes the time to have her grow as a character. Even as a child whe nshe's escaping from thugs with guns, she's shown as an adept superwoman without any prior establishment that she's supposed to be this way from the start. Also, I really didn't buy the implausibility of the "choice" scene when her uncle tries to make her assess what she wants to do with her life. Like I said though, Saldana does decent with the action stuff, some of the action scenes are decent, and I wasn't bored. I didn't care though, and ultimately, the film never blew me away, instead coming off as a typical mediocre action film. Take it or leave it. -

A bland and unoriginal revenge thriller with Zoe Saldana being the best thing in a movie that is instantly forgettable. The writing needed work, the story is somewhat convoluted and incredibly implausible (action movies usually need a little bit of suspension of disbelief, but Columbiana took it way over the top), and the acting outside of Saldana is mediocre. It's your typical Luc Besson action movie, except without the usual guilty pleasures outside of a good looking heroine. -

Vengeance is beautiful. Very good movie. I very much enjoyed it and I think Zoe Saldana has alot of potential to be a great actress in the future. She very much carried this film by herself and she was specially great on her role. Nice supporting cast and very good story, nice ending. A young woman grows up to be a stone-cold assassin after witnessing her parents' murder as a child in Bogota. She works for her uncle as a hitman by day, but her personal time is spent engaging in vigilante murders that she hopes will lead her to her ultimate target - the mobster responsible for her parents' death. -

Columbiana had the potential of being such a great action film. However that was not to be. I was very much let down by this film, and I thought it failed as an action film. Everything we saw on-screen, we've seen a hundred times before. The sad thing, is that there's some good talent involved in the film, and their skills are wasted on such a poorly constructed action film. I was very much looking forward to seeing Coilumbiana as I very much enjoy Zoe Saldana. Unfortunately the film didn't deliver, and it ended up being a very bad film. The actions scenes were entertaining at times, but in the end it leaves a lot to be desired. What really sucks about the film is that this could have been such a great film, it had the potential of being a memorable, fun action film. For me this is one of the worst films of 2011, and I was disappointed overall. I felt the film was lazy, unimpressive and pretty predictable. Everything you expect that will happen, happens. I felt the film was a total waste, and Columbiana is for me one of the worst of 2011., This is a pointless, bad acted (despite the good talent that's wasted here), they delivered bad performances. Columbiana is nothing new, we've all seen it in previous films, and this one simply doesn't cut it. Coluimbiana is a terrible and exercise caution while watching it, you may be disappointed like I was. This film let me down big time, and was overall, a bad, predictable film that I want to forget. -

completely entertaining with some great action sequences, but the film suffers from "why didnt the characters just do this?" and "how did we get from here to there?" with just a few slight changes to the script the film could have actually been great. -

"She will never attack straight on...and you will not see her until it's too late." I'm quite the fan of action movies featuring sexy women killing people, even when it's a fairly average one like Colombiana. The plot - a young assassin named Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) is out to get bloody revenge on the people who killed her parents in front of her when she was a child - isn't exactly the freshest, but it really is only there to serve as an excuse for Saldana to sneak in and out of various places and blow people away. All I expected from Colombiana was a revenge-driven, simple action movie, and that's exactly what I got. Sure, there's filler in the form of a love interest and some ineffective but incredibly lucky law enforcement agents that bumble onto the trail of our sexy killer, but those diversions don't bog the movie down too much, so I won't complain. The ending is a little silly, too, but that's minor. I liked Colombiana well enough for what it was. It doesn't redefine the genre, but it was better than a lot of similar movies that I've seen lately. -

Trying not to compare too much to the classic hitman flick 'Leon' this female assassin flick tries too hard for its own good to raise emotion and thrills. Its not that its a bad film, far from it, its a solid action film and you must give the director and cast credit for making the film much better than it deserves to be but at the end of the day the film is very predictable and simply nothing new. The cast are very good in this film with a strong brooding presence from Saldana who does actually come across as a capable killer but the Colombian bad guys are all pretty cliched with their stubble and shades hehe. Performances from Curtis as the mentor/uncle, James as the ever behind FBI and a decent small role for McTavish as a Marshall with a very good US accent all add to a well rounded and understated cast that really do make the film quite believeable...at times. I wonder who is the better young innocent pre-hitgirl? the young Stenberg or the young Portman? hard to decide really, the young Cataleya is slightly unbelievable as she leaps and bounds over rooftops like a pro gymnast when the baddies go after her, after she sticks a henchman with a blade!. Not really how a young child would behave methinks but I guess she is suppose to be gifted, its just less realistic when watching. One problem with the film is the forced emotional aspects which I found hard to accept, 'Emilio' the uncle and mentor of 'Cataleya' is some kind of underground thug or mafia type who gunned down an innocent person in their car to prove a point to a young Cataleya and Cataleya's family from Columbia were all involved with drug trafficking, they had guns stashed around the house!! so really its kinda hard to feel for Cataleya and what she's doing as everyone she knows/has known is a criminal. Also you wonder how she becomes an elite killer, who trained her? Emilio the uncle? was he some kind of super killer too? he merely comes across as a Colombian goodfella type. The film can't quite capture the close emotion of a certain Besson classic and like with all modern films ends up relying on flashy action set pieces to make up for it when a more subdued approach would have worked wonders, the final curtain for the main bad guy is also quite stupid. Solid but nothing new to offer over other good female assassin flicks such as 'Nikita' and remake 'Point of No Return' aka 'The Assassin', but you have to wonder why Besson is so obsessed with assassin films that he keeps remaking the same thing over and over. -

I'd like to say that this film had potential to be something great, but the plot is so damn uninteresting, as well as the script, the acting (even Saldana can't save this), and just everything makes this an all-around terrible film. -

Columbiana is another revenge action thriller, I literally was bored out of my mind. Cataleya (Zoe Salanda) becomes a vigilante killer after years ago witnessing her parents murder at the hands of men her father worked for, and she decides to track them down a kill them all. The plot is so simple and dull that a 4 year old could understand the plot, and if I have said it once I hve said it a thousand times, quit making movies like this. The cast is totally dull, and all Zoe Salanda will be remembered for is actress wearing most cleavage, and she was not ready for a role like this, at least I think so. The action sequences sucked, I have hardly ever been so bored in a action movie with hardly any action, and it just didn't give me that "Holy Sh!t" moments I was hoping for. Columbiana is very boring and has been done before, very few things went right and I don't plan on recommending this to action lovers, but it did have some very fun chase scenes, but thats about it. -

Bottom line: A pretty good time at the movies, but nothing to write home about. Director Olivier Megaton also directed "Transporter 3." No surprise. "Megaton" incidentally is not his given name. It's his stage name. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that. How does he expect anyone to take him seriously with a stage name like that? -

Zoe Saldana stars as "Cataleya", a woman who is a trained killer on a mission to avenger her parents death in this action thriller. While revenge movies have been done before, and done better, not many of them have been done with a lead quite like Saldana. She brings a sexiness mixed with some badass qualities that helps set this apart. It's shot to look a lot like "Man on Fire", but it's nowhere near as good. The movie is around 110 minutes, yet the story still just doesn't feel fleshed out enough. It has a solid back story, but once we meet Zaldana the story feels a little rushed and the ending is kind of anti-climatic. It's not a horrible movie, just an unfullfilling movie, it leaves you kind of feeling like you missed out on something. I love revenge movies, and while this isn't in the top 5, it's worth a watch. If you like movies like "Man on Fire", "Hanna" or the "Kill Bill" series, then you will probably find some enjoyment here. Just don't expect this to be in the same class. -

Zoe Saldana is a convincing action movie heroine, but Oliver Megaton's revenge thriller is filled with horribly filmed and edited action scenes for the most part, unnecessary sub-plots and nothing to make us interested in the story or characters. -

Apparently, Columbians and several academic professors of Columbian descent have taken offense with the implications of the new action film from the stewardship of producer/co-writer Luc Besson (name a French action movie from the last 20 years and he's likely had some hand in its development). The criticism being drawn is that Columbiana paints an unflattering picture of life in the South American country of the, almost, same name. I suppose that could be one charge against the film, but why be so limiting? Columbiana doesn't make anybody look good, except for its star Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek), who could even stand to eat a few more sandwiches if you ask me. 10-year-old Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg, soon to breakout in a big way as Rue in next year's Hunger Games) has the misfortune of watching her parents gunned down in front of her eyes. Her father ran afoul with the local drug lord, though we're never told why. The drug lord's main henchman, Marco (Jordi Molla), is looking for a microchip Cataleya's father gave her. The girl stabs Marco in his hand and leaps out a window, darting through the streets of Bogotá with goons chasing after. She makes it into a U.S. embassy and offers up this microchip filled with significant data (what we're never told) as her passport to America. She eventually finds her way to Chicago, where she lives with her Uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis, doing an accent from Scarface). She wants to be a killer to avenge her parents, and her uncle agrees to help. Flash forward 15 years, and the adult Cataleya (Saldana) is working as a hired assassin. Her calling card is painting the cataleya orchid on the chests of her victims. Why? To attract attention from the right parties. She's playing a dangerous game, as they always do, romancing an artist (Alias' Michael Vartan), staying a step ahead of the authorities, and working her way up the Columbian goon food chain to get back at Marco and his boss. This is one of the dullest action movies I've had the privilege of sitting through. I was actively counting down the minutes until it would be over about halfway in. It's not because Columbiana is particularly bad, it's just so staggeringly routine, a French-styled action thriller cobbled together from the leftover bits of previous French-styled action thrillers (take one part La Femme Nikita, some faux Professional gravitas, add some District B13 parkour, how about a few outlandish Transporter getaways and bake for 30-40 minutes). There are a few decent action sequences but lots of time in between, time that lets the film's momentum lag and allows space to start contemplating all the questionable aspects of the picture. There are so many lazy, recognizable pieces onscreen, from the idiot FBI agents, who are always late on the trail, to the underwritten romantic love interest who is only there for booty calls and to accidentally be endangered, to the oblique bad guys who are just bad, and sometimes rather bad at being bad. These guys couldn't outrun a 10-year-old girl in Columbia, what makes me think they'll get their act together and take out the adult version? And I absolutely hate it when movies, set in other lands, have the characters speak one line in their native tongue and then transition immediately into English spiced with the occasional foreign phrase. Columbiana has the notoriety of making me yearn for the days where a female assassin picking off men twice her size was a novel concept/image. Turn after turn, beat for beat, the plot has characters behaving in contrived ways because the story would not work without these contrivances. Cataleya says she's an expert killer, but much of her expertise involves an insane number of coincidences and variables that are impossible to account for. We're talking about the bathroom habits of guards, the amount of coffee consumption, the placement of specific prison cells, the precise number of guards and their own attention spans, the fact that every single person would not notice security cameras being messed with, and even nitty-gritty stuff like the amount of water in a plastic cup and the exact size of a hole that would allow the right amount f liquid to drip and pool into a spoon. Not to mention the fact that this also works on the assumption that police finding a plastic cup and a spoon inside a security panel would not find any of this suspicious. What the hell? That's not rigorous planning and flawless execution? That's divine intervention and/or good luck. At least in other hitman films that would study their prey to make it look like an accident. Not our Cataleya. She's been taking out goons and leaving her calling card in an effort to attract attention from a certain Columbian cartel leader. The problem is that it takes her 15 years and over 22 murders before her skills attract media attention. That's a frustration that the Son of Sam might identify with. But how would murders in Chicago attract attention in Columbia? The only thing noteworthy for an enterprise that is so inherently generic is the weird moments that catch your attention. First, Saldana's emaciated, wiry, potentially malnourished frame certainly draws your attention. Has there ever been a skinnier assassin on screen? There's a reason that this woman is able to constantly squeeze inside air ducts and other cramped spaces; she's practically a contortionist with her body. Now the actress has always been petite but her diminished physicality makes everything she does seem so much less believable. When she's slinking around with a humongous assault rifle, you'd think the rifle weighs more than Saldana. And then when she engages in hand-to-hand combat, you keep waiting for some bad guy to grab her by the scruff of her neck and just hold her at arm's length, a safe distance from potential kicks. Despite all her steely glares, Saldana just does not come across as a believable hitman. To top that off, the way director Oliver Megaton's (Transporter 3) cameras seem to worship her lithe, leggy body gives an unsettling support for Saldana's teeny tiny body. Now people can be just as discriminatory toward thin people as they can be with the overweight, but with Columbiana, Saldana's skinny body negatively impacts the reality of a story already riddled with logic gaps. Then there's Cataleya's uncle who himself is something of a criminal under lord. She wants to grow up and be a killer and he just sort of shrugs and says, "Okay," in the same tone of voice as if she had said she wanted to be a cowboy. But this is Movie World, a place where Cataleya's father tells his driver, "We've got maybe an hour at most before he kills my whole family," and then spends that fateful hour in such a lackadaisical fashion. He stops and walks around his car, sits down his little girl to have one last talk, waits for his wife to pack; there's no sense of urgency here. People, you got one hour to supposedly live, you don't pack a suitcase you just get in the car and run! But getting back to Uncle Emilio in Chicago. After he enrolls her in school, she's sulky because she doesn't think there's anything she can gain from American education. She just wants to learn the ways of a killer. Her uncle, in a misguided feat to teach her a lesson, pulls out a gun and shoots randomly into a street, causing a car to crash and dozens of witnesses to huddle. "What can I teach you if you don't learn?" he says, somehow giving the least inspiring case for public education. Then, preposterously enough, he and Cataleya scamper off at a mid-trot, casually eluding the police and all the dozens of witnesses who have clearly been able to see them this whole time. Columbiana is one of those cookie-cutter action movies that just coasts on the apathetic expectations the audience has when they knowingly plop down money for a generic genre picture. And generic is certainly Columbiana. It's a fairly standard revenge picture with some fairly standard action, devoid of any discernable kinetic style that might make for memorable sequences. Columbiana would not exist if it weren't for a wealth of clichés and contrivances; the whole enterprise is bursting at the seams thanks to all its shortcuts in story and character. What does the title even mean? Is the film Columbia-esque? Is the depiction of skinny assassins and preposterous, illogical action supposed to be reminiscent of life in the country of Columbia? I think the film paints a worse picture of Chicago than Columbia, but at any rate this is an action thriller that can't be bothered to thrill. Columbiana is generic to the point of desperation, where even the sight of Saldana in a skintight cat suit can become underwhelming in time, a tragedy of international proportions. Nate's Grade: C -

This is definitely not the most original idea out there, seeing as it is just another revenge story; However, the thrills are top notch, the action is impressive, and the plot line goes through many shifts that will spiral any viewer into confusion, until the end. I did begin to like this film more than I thought I would, but the final 10 minutes of this film honestly felt like the writers said, "let's do this, this, and this, okay were done, release it." The movie had too much going on to have such a subtle conclusion. Zoe Saldana is far too good of an actress to have stooped to this level in film. I will probably forget about this film when this year ends, but for what it is, I had quite a bit of fun riding along with all the actors and all of their actions. This was just another average story with cool action. But isn't that what people go to the movies for nowadays? -

Cataleya: My parents were murdered when I was 9, in front of me. Colombiana is the latest action/thriller from French producer Luc Besson. For those unfamiliar, Besson was the director responsible for wonderful action films such as Leon (The Professional) and La Femme Nakita, but has since been known for producing a slew of slick and simple action films such as The Transporter series and Taken. As usual, it seems as if Besson simply had an idea during a meal and wrote it down on a napkin, only to have one of his French protégé's develop a whole film around it. Colombiana does not win many points for originality, but it does manage to be a serviceable action film with the great presence of Zoe Saldana in the lead role. After serving as strong female characters in films like Avatar and The Losers, Saldana now has the chance to headline an action film of her own and she manages to be the one element that keeps this film's head above water. read the whole review at thecodeiszeek.com -
