Plot: Who knew Luke Skywalker was such a geek? As the director-coproducer-star of Comic Book: The Movie, Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill embraces his inner nerd and pays affectionate tribute to ...( read more read more... )those who are attracted (either casually or obsessively) to the fantastical realms of comic books. As "Don Swan," high school teacher, lifelong comic collector, and microbudget filmmaker, Hamill joins legions of fans at San Diego's epic-scale ComiCon International (the world's largest sci-fi/comic convention), on a mission to thwart a dubious Hollywood makeover of Captain Courage, his favorite "Golden Age" comic superhero. Hamill's experiment in "mockumentary" is unscripted, haphazard, not very funny, and a bit too "inside" for mass appeal, but its spontaneous spirit hides a worthy agenda that any fan can relate to: While exploring the lively atmosphere of ultimate fandom, Comic Book: The Movie investigates the schism between Hollywood and fandom that results, too often, in lackluster big-screen adventures for beloved comic-book characters. By recruiting a cast of prominent cartoon-voice talent (like himself), in addition to an all-star list of comic-artist cameos including Stan Lee, Matt Groening, and many others, Hamill has crafted a casual yet thoroughly researched portrait of one of America's most vibrant subcultures. The abundant bonus features are arguably better than the feature itself, most notably the extended interviews with Stan Lee, Hugh Hefner, Kevin Smith, and B-movie king Bruce Campbell, all of whom (like Hamill) have played influential roles in the fandom they celebrate. --Jeff Shannon

AWESOME movie, it's a must own, it doesn't have much about REAL comic books but it is full of voice power so to any voice chasers it's a MUST OWN!

Fun in spots, and watchable (especially if you're a geek/fanboy/fangirl) but the documentary framing device is applied unevenly and not very effectively.

This movie was alright, it could have been better in my opinion, but when the laughs come in this movie, they come hard, everytime I laughed, I had tears in my eyes. When Rick talks like The Beatles and of course "We're Simpatico" "I'm not even Italian!"

A loving and entertaining, if not particularly funny, homage to all things nerdy, with an unbelievable cast and likeable storyline. Big points for being all improvised and never boring. I had higher hopes for the comedic aspects of the film, but at least it kept a smile on my face for most of the running length, and the cast was exceptionally likeable. A solid love letter to all us nerds out there, and reccommended without much trepidation.

The bonus features are actually more entertaining than the film itself, but it still has its moments.

Mark Hamill does an excellet job realistically capturing the events of a comic con and comic book fans. You can tell that he really is a fanboy himself. As a comic fan who has attended comic conventions I found this particularly funny and easy to relate to. But I'm not sure how non-comic fans would take to this film.

Zip.ca rental of Comic Book: The Movie.

Well, this film had potential. It could have been hilarious. Instead, it's not even remotely amusing. The characters were just plain boring. They were just not funny. If it wasn't so blatantly obvious that that was what they were going for, it would have been ok. Instead, it's this boring crap.

I'm quite familiar with the convention world and I think that if they hadn't gone with some big stupid stereotype characters they could have done OK. I also think that if they had bothered to shoot anything with good lighting it might have been ok too.

Bonus points awarded for the appearance of both Kevin Smith and Bruce Campbell.

    The Opinion: CRAP.

What the fuck was this load of crap really about. Just a bunch of voice over actors trying to feel important.

The bonus features make this movie worthwhile. It's nice to see voiceover artists get starring roles in a live action movie.
