Murphy joined forces with Arsenio Hall for the first of his multiple character comedies. Murphy's main character is Prince Akeem, an African royal who travels to New York to find a suitable wife. All he wants is, "A woman that's going to arouse my intellect as well as my loins." Such a mate proves hard to find. The film's most enduring bit actually has nothing to do with Murphy. It's Soul Glo, the renowned Jheri curl hair product that appears throughout the movie. But Murphy and Hall get all the rest of the laughs. Their hilarious barber characters share an exchange too dirty for TV. It's worth the rental to hear the real thing. Keep your eyes peeled for Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first on-screen role during the barbershop scene.
An all-time favourite of mine, hilarious and heartwarming by turns. Full of classic quotes ("She is your.....Quuuuuueeeeeeeeen to beeeeeeeeeeee!!" and "The royal penis is clean, your Highness." spring to mind), this flick retains its replay value after almost 20 years (slightly awkward 80s camera mugging notwithstanding). Much underrated and eternally adored!
this is one of my all time favourite movie...no other film can be like this really. it's both funny and inspirational. really interesting, seen it like 20 times now lol

This movie cracks me up. Considering it was one of Murphy's first movie and he came up with the story line just proves how good he really is. You will be rolling on the floor laughing when you watch this. Trust me you have to watch it.
eddie murphy play as akeed the african-prince is plan to trip to new york with his pal semmi(arsenio hall)to find a bride. director john landis who did direct "trading place" reunion with eddie murphy.
so watch out for samuel l. jackson and cuba gooding, jr(with eddie murphy reunion in '07 "norbit")in early cameo role and eddie murphy and aresnio hall heavy make-up roles and don ameche and ralph bellamy(that same character in "trading places" with eddie murphy also)cameo.
this movie cracks me up. This is way better then what Eddie is coming out with now days he needs to go back to his roots. there so many great moments in this movie it would take forever to put them on here you should just see it. (n)
Hilarious movie. During his hayday, I've always liked comedy movies with Eddie Murphy in them. Throw in Arsenio Hall and your assured a hell of a time simply laughing your head. Loved the whole idea for the movie too. Pure comic genius.
A comical 80?s comedy, that?s still great to revisit today. A riches to rags story of love, watch out for the cameo role from Samuel L. Jackson. I have watched this film countless times.
Good comedy romance. Murphy is sincere and the cameos from now-celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson are fun.....and i cant remember the quote "If you think of garbage, think of Akiem"..LOL
It's one of the first Eddie Murphy movies I watched when I was younger, and I have to say it holds up so much better when compared to his other movies. I appreciate the humor here, especially the African culture meets American culture clashes.
i mean how can you not!its got the ever so funny eddie murphy in that always seems to be able to make ya laugh even when it seems like he's not trying!lol
Typical Eddie Mirphy comedy that doesn't have anything to say and relies on the same old jokes. I just don't really find him funny. Most of this film is just stupid and not something I would have missed if I had never seen it. I liked the cameo from Samual L. Jackson however. It was short and sweet but rather funny. The rest wasn't really that good and the whole thing was just a bit cheezy.
What a pair, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall! Looking for Queens. Since I lived there I know from the aerial shots where that McDonald's was, right on the Boulevard in Elmhurst.
