Is there anything worse than a horror movie that isn't scary? Or in the case of Crazy Eights, doesn't even want to try? Maybe that's not what the filmmakers were going for, maybe they were trying to create some sort of psychological drama? Which is what it felt like at times, but which in that case, doesn't work either. But silly me, when I watch a movie from the horror series Eight Movies to Die For, I expect to at least have some attempts at horror. And honestly, there are a few moments that have some horror elements, but the filmmakers seem to be trying to create the opposite of suspense. Any time anything even remotely dark or freaky started to happen, they get it over with as quick as possible and cut to the next scene. I'm sorry, but that's not how horror films work.
When I originally heard about the Eight Movies to Die For concept, I was excited. Here were some folks really trying to scare us, or at least that's what they promised. Their intention was to bring us eight films, that we hadn't yet had a chance to see, eight films that supposedly lived on the edge. If they had had their first festival anywhere near me, I would have gone. Luckily, I had to wait till DVD. I believe I watched seven out of eight from the first series. One, The Abandoned, was actually good and somewhat creepy, two or three were okay, like Reincarnation, the rest sucked badly. So it was with trepidation that I went again to the well for their 2007 series, hopefully I started off with the worst one of the bunch, because if they get any worse than Crazy Eights, my confidence has been completely destroyed.
Crazy Eights, is about a group of people brought together for a funeral of a friend. It comes out that they all spent time in a mental institution together when they were children. There's a mystery surrounding their friend's death, so the alive seven make the trek back to the institution to find out what really happened. Their first stop is a time capsule they left for themselves to find, inside they find the bones of a little girl, who was at the institution with them. Being too stupid to call the police, they investigate further. And before you know it they find themselves locked in the basement of this long abandoned institution, with what appears to be the ghost of the little girl stalking them.
They continue to make the stupidest, most clicheŽd horror mistakes possible. With each character insisting on setting off on their own, no matter how many of them get knocked off. They're constantly saying things like, "Oh no, that's our 4th friend to die in the last fifteen minutes, I'm going to explore this creepy hallway where I just saw something ghost like moving about in. You guys stay here." These are literally about the dumbest characters you could find in a modern horror film. So you can't possibly care when the obvious happens and they get killed.
The set-up isn't that bad, I can go along with them trying to figure out their past in this crumbling shell of a hospital. The set design is moody, the lighting appropriately dim, they even do a decent job of setting up the ghost. Unfortunately past that, they seem completely clueless on how to scare anyone. As soon as anything creepy starts to happen, they try to get it over with as quickly as possible, a hand jumps out of the dark, they cut to another room and we hear a muffled scream. That's how nearly everyone dies in this sorry excuse for a horror film. There's no drawn out suspense, there aren't even any good deaths. Everyone dies by editing.
By the end I'd lost all interest in the film, I honestly don't remember how it ended, I just didn't care. The acting is all pretty bad. Dina Meyer and Traci Lords are the lead actresses, neither has ever turned in a convincing performance, the filmmakers were simply going for some recognizable faces. They also got Gabrielle Anwar, who has made some decent films in the past, but she's pretty much wasted here, one of the first to die. Frank Whaley does his typical whiny role, he's phoning it in, and still creates the most realistic character. They try to create some drama about the horrible past these friends have gone through, but the writing and acting aren't good enough to pull it off. The little creepiness they have going for them, they almost deliberately avoid. A real waste of a film.

The thing I kept thinking when I was watching this movie was, who is the editor? This is an editing nightmare, something happens and then 2 seconds later the same character is doing something completely different. It felt like a collage of scenes mended together by a very good premise but the film falls way short, not only in content but in length also (so much cutting perhaps?). There were scenes that dragged a lot, nothing said or did anything which was very boring. All in all a waste of time.
this movie madde no sense it has a good cast that did there best but it was more like improv then a movie
I can take a dearth of motivation and logic in a horror film. Just don't bore me and waste a good cast in the process.
I think its the worst flick among others have been shown in HorrorFest 2007 .. the story is about the revenge of the past ghosts .. say kind like Ju-On but in misdirection ..
The rare horror flick in which the screenwriter is actually better than the plot, but it doesn't save the movie from a few typical horror movie downfalls like splitting up. The movie creates a great feeling of being trapped, but the lack of more supernatural creatures than just the one ghost makes this movie weak. While antagonist ghost itself does not scare, this movie's strong points lie in its "flipping out due to supernatural hallucination" and "bloodied corpse left by the ghost" scenes. At the conclusion I felt half cheated, as it was an appropriate unhappy one, but didn't satisfy on following the theme through to a resounding end.
How can a 80 minute movie be this slow? The only thing this movie had going for it was atomsphere and they only did so much with this. And that ending was just so abrupt and quick that ti did not feel right. I mean, we all have a pretty good idea what happened, but still. Maybe I've seen too many horror movie and have become to jaded, but I feel this was not much of one. Blah, what a waste of time.
This is seriously the most bizarre movie I've seen in a long time, in that a) it makes no sense and b) whoever edited it was clearly living through some sort of traumatic ether dream. Definitely the worst of the After Dark movies thus far, though pretty amusing.
Part of Horror Fest, 8 films 2 die 4, as usual. twist and turns that make you go huh, the graphic nature of monster so to speak is pretty gross, not really intended for children a certain age, starts out slow, but picks up and we figure it out b4 it's all said and done, one of those movies that you need to pay attention to at all times, or watch again in order to make sense. I have to give props to Traci Lords {porn star turn singer turned actress} actually is a better Actress than Paris Hilton, even though her part is semi big hehe, now i just hope i have the right Tracy Lords lol
Nicely done and had me questioning through the movie. Kept my attention through most of it and I love it when I guess something and I'm right. That's this kinda movie. But in a good way, of course. Worth a watch again but not sure if I really want to.
it had some decent atmosphere. but it kinda confused me then kinda annoyed me then it won me over and went back to annoying me again watch it if it's for free or you have nothing to do you'll probably go "ehhh better than cleaning my house."
I appreciated what they were trying to do here. This was supposed to be a serious psychological horror film. Only problem is, the serious lapses in logic made it impossible to take it seriously. I wound up laughing at the stupidity of it all, and was rooting for everyone to die by the end. Next...
Really good storyline... the killingz were rather quick.. not really much scare tatics.. I thought there would be more visuals in this movie ( meaning twisted images flashing ) & most of all you barely saw what was killing them... they knew who it was but they only showed a very very very very very quick glance of the lil gurl towardz the very end.... Traci Lords, Dina Meyer & Gabrielle Anwar really delivered solid proformances but the 3 guys really did a piss poor job...
Movie was ok. I did like Traci Lords in it. The other actors I could care less about. I have to say its ok but if you want to rent it thats up to you. About a bunch of people trapped in a basement with ghosts that kill them one by one.
I actually liked this one. It had some bigger named actors, so the acting was pretty good. There were some shots I thought were pretty cool, and the ending is sort of messed up.
Crazy Eights is a card game for two or more players. The object of the game is to get rid of all your cards to a discard pile.
There are a number of variations of the basic game, and a number of different names including Crates, Finlander's Uno, Last One, Mau-Mau, Pesten, Rockaway, Spoons, Swedish Rummy, Switch, Last Card, and Tschausepp. In Britain, it is often referred to as Black Jack (not to be confused with the casino card game Blackjack). Bartok, Mao, Quango and UNO are more extreme variations, containing elements not covered in this entry.
Each player is dealt eight cards, with the rest of the deck being placed face down at the center of the table. The top card is then turned face up to start the discard pile. Some players may agree to the "Dealer's Goodies" rule, in which the dealer is permitted to take the first discarded card if it is a "special" card, (i.e. an Ace, 2, 4, 8, or Q?) and continue taking cards until an "ordinary" card surfaces.
This movie stank, it never made me jump, in spite of trying like hell with several bits of sudden loud music, and the plot has many bits that feel completely glossed over just to get the characters to a creepy hospital.
The film somehow seems stretched out even though it clocks in under the 90 minute mark.
Pass.
So, this was a downward spiral with the acting. Sometimes you can get passed it but not with this. Bad acting lead to bad character interaction and thats not a good thing...which also lead to bad story, that wasn't really that great. It moved to fast, made you fill in the gaps, no gore and didn't really get to see what happened. So, don't watch this...unless your going for all eight of the movies to die for. The only reason it got oneis because I did like the subtleness with the ghost.
My 2nd film of the 2007 After Dark Horrorfest set, I gotta say it's a Hell of a lot better than my first (Lake Dead which was shit).
Not entirely sure what was going on most of the time but from what I gathered, a group of people who were experimented on when they were kids get trapped in the hospital they grew up in and are picked off by a pissed off ghost...or something, I don't know. The performances were good and it had some nice atmosphere.
Great cast and an interesting premise, but it lacks any real scares or creepiness and the pacing is as slow as molasses. Needed several rewrites before it was shot.
a very mild ghost story that could of been really scary but with the off screen deaths and just seeing some little dead girls hands slowly pulling back into the darkness made it not so scary they never even show a full shot of her! the location where these 6 people were trapped wasnt even all that creepy either and the ending to this movie was crap
This is the second Horrorfest film I've seen and I have to say it showed a lot of promise. There were a few minor annoyances - the music and some of the editing was sloppy, but there were also moments of brilliance here. It's a well crafted horror. It's definitely a slow-burn and the story was a bit clumsy in spots. Horror fans should go check it out. Don't expect to be scared out of your mind or anything though...
