Ted, The Man with the Yellow Hat: "You don't give a monkey a latte!"

Ted, The Man in Yellow (Will Ferrell, Anchorman) is a nerdy museum worker who subjects children to very boring lectures. When he discovers that the museum is losing money and he's about to be out of a job, ...( read more)he agrees to journey to Africa to find an ancient and gigantic idol. When he arrives, he does find the idol (which is not quite as large as he had hoped). He also finds a curious little monkey that follows him back to the big city. Now, Ted needs to save the museum, come clean about the idol, and figure out what to do with George. The film does change the essence of Curious George somewhat. In the original children's books, the character of Ted was only ever known as The Man in the Yellow Hat and never named. Here the focus is more on Ted, The Man in the Yellow Hat's problems retaining his job and even having a romance, rather than on the character of George and his innocent mischief as was always the case in the books. As long as one can see it as a film that requires nothing in the way of any mental faculties beyond that age, one can enjoy Curious George for exactly what it is. The monkey is an endearing little character and comes with a real child-like innocence. There are some quite impressive 3D scenes tracking George across rooftops and through the streets of New York. O'Callaghan's primary-colored adventure has a plush, almost-edible vibrancy that remains largely faithful to the aesthetic template set forth by creators H.A. and Margaret Rey.

Jeepers. Flixster rates this as 3 1/2 stars. I found it a horribly childish waste of 90 minutes. Nowhere near the quality of other animated flicks I have seen like Ice Age or Shrek, etc.

I appreciated that the animation wasn't phonier than a Chinese redhead, but the Jack Johnson soundtrack kind of rubbed me the wrong way. And Will Farrell as The Man With the Yellow Hat was pretty damn annoying. Plotwise, it was kind of annoying but it's a kid 's movie and they te...( read more)nd not to care too much about plot points. One of the better animated movies I've seen of late, but that's not saying much.

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

Visually, the movie benefits from a charming animation style, a traditional 2-D approach layered with shadows and backlit halos. But it benefits most from George, still worming his way into people's h... full review

Ty Burr, Boston Globe

Artful simplicity may be an impossible quality in a modern children's movie, so Curious George opts instead for mayhem under a blanket of sweetness. The little ones understand. full review

Claudia Puig, USA Today

The movie, particularly the endearing George, should appeal to young children, and the humor should elicit a few chuckles among their parents as well. full review

Colin Covert, The Minneapolis Star Tribune

The makers of Curious George have figured out how to make an innocent cartoon that will amuse knee-nuzzlers without hitting adults like a liter of chloroform. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The movie is faithful to the spirit and innocence of the books, and director Matthew O'Callaghan and his team create a visual look that is uncluttered, charming, and not so realistic that it undermine... full review

Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

Contrasted with the hyperactive, cacophonous aggressiveness of a Shrek or Shark Tale, Curious George's steadfast modesty is a trait worth quietly celebrating. full review

It was a well animated movie but the story was lacking and the character development was bad. True Curious George fans (those who have read the stories) would be disappointed. It is, however, a good family film if that's what you're looking for.
