A strange mix of neorealism and surrealist expressionism. It includes some of the most stunning imagery this side of Herzog. Tony Leung never fails to impress.

It's a respectable film that shows how a corrupt and immoral society can sadly bring down the innocence that lives in its midst. It had some good performances too, but, I personally think it went on about a half hour too long.

BIG SCREEN. / A second look reveals to me that this movie was better crafted than I originally thought, but the impact when I saw it on a big screen many years ago cannot be replaced. Its canvas is wide and its postmodern and poetic approach adds a powerfully lyrical punch to its storyline. However, I still think that it is about 10 minutes overlong.

The structure was not fully grounded, but I did like it a lot. It was very Werner Herzog-like.

Finally I get to watch a Vietnamese film though this was obviously financed by the French art film companies. It mixes realism with surrealism which to my surprise worked really well. It treads a fine line between authenticity and pretension. Some scenes are of an authentic Vietn...( read more)amese flavour whereas others are very obviously designed to appear exotic and oriental, for example, the numerous folk song scenes. The plot itself it fairly simple which is great because it works just fine. Some of the cinematography is amazing, especially that scene where the protagonist is high and starts wallowing in blue paint, with the ceiling light pulsating like a strobe light - otherwordly is the best way to describe it. It was like a scene from Tetsuo.
Overall, the film is good but not great, I suspect most of the praise is due to the fact that this was an arthouse film that came out of Vietnam and it was sufficiently arty enough to obtain merit in the festival circuits. It's not a bad movie, but let's be frank, it's not great. Still, I really hope to see much more from the Vietnamese cinema and what it has to offer.

Set in modern day Ho Chi Minh City, "Cyclo" is the study of survival among three young individuals - Cyclo, Sister, and Poet. It's wonderfully refreshing, and you won't be able to take your eyes off the screen.

The characters are nameless. It is not their names that define t

...( read more)hem, but their actions. Cyclo (a rickshaw) is 18 years old, and living in a poor neighborhood of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He's a rickshaw driver, with little knowledge on life. Pretty soon his rickshaw is stolen and under his boss' instructions, he's forced into petty crime to pay back his debts. His life spirals downward as each passing crime jolts him into a more ravenous lifestyle.

Cyclo's older sister, beautiful and naive, is worn by the long hours of work in the restaurant. She reluctantly turns to prostituting herself under the watchful eye of a gangster named Poet (Tony Leung), who pimps her out to men craving abnormal fetishes.

Lastly, there is Poet. He's been in the business of crime a long time. Head honcho of Cyclo's gang, he's never seen without a cigarette drooping from his lips. He becomes transfixed by Sister, despite the fact that he is her pimp. It is tragic to see how their relationship unfolds.

Anh Hung Tran's expressionistic vision offers minimal dialogue, but a wonderful cascade of colors that symbolize violence, blood, defiance, and offers insights into the impurities of one's soul. A definite recommendation.
