A mighty thunderstorm blows him clean off the map, and spits him out far away over the lush green town of Clarence. In this new town, he rockets into the world of Glenda, the town's only parking cop. While the media back home becomes obsessed with the story of his disappearance, Danny gets to reinvent himself in this new town, and in his great adventure, he discovers a true soulmate in Glenda. Fate catches up with him eventually, as Danny's true identity is revealed and Trudy--now a tabloid celebrity--comes to the idyllic town to claim Danny and drag him back to Sydney. Danny Morgan (Ifans) has been a dreamer, coming up with one crazy scheme after another. Not for profit, though. Just crazy little projects like a backyard slingshot which serves no practical purpose, to help him break the monotony of his life as a cement truck driver. His only jo...( read more)y in life seems to be his yearly vacation, when he and his longtime girlfriend Trudy (Justine Clarke) go on a camping holiday. But what Danny doesn?t know is that his beloved has just started seeing local television sports personality Sandy Upman on the side, so when she ups and cancels the holiday on him with a feeble work-related excuse, Danny has nothing to do but go stir crazy in their house, until Trudy suggests a backyard barbeque with friends. It is while picking up supplies for the party where Danny comes up with his latest ruse: to tie a bunch of helium filled balloons to a deck chair and see if it would lift Danny off the ground. The gangling Rhys Ifans makes an unlikely romantic hero, which is exactly the best kind. His wildly unshaven look, which is on display in the first part of the movie, is hardly one to make female heads turn, but he cleans up well and possesses an everyman charm. Miranda Otto is lovely here, not in the ethereal Eowyn way, but in a gorgeous girl-next-door way, and she shows a warm comedic touch that contrasts nicely with Danny's goofiness. "Danny Deckchair" is fairly predictable.

Pretty good Aussie yarn of Danny dropping into a small town and turning everything upside down.

Danny Deckchair is a clean romantic comedy. For some reason this movie really moved me. This is a feel-good movie that has a happy ending (with a surprise joke for the viewers).

I could relate to Danny living in denial, and hoping that he could just ignore his problems and th...( read more)ey will "go away". The stress of the big city was too much for him, and he was longing for adventure.

I could also relate to Glenda, who is strict and conservative, but learned to loosen up when Danny "dropped" into her life, much like the way my wife and daughter taught ME how to enjoy life.

There was a lightly sentimental moment where Glenda remembered how her father used to bring her for a ride on the motorcycle just for fun. It wasn't supposed to be a sad moment, but I cried because I was that father. As soon as I can afford it, I am getting another motorcycle. I didn't realize how much it meant to my daughter.

This movie wasn't as much about the balloon trip as it was about his new life pretending to be somebody important in a simple town. The empty deck chair is "floating" around somewhere waiting to expose him as a fake, but he doesn't want to go back to his past life. He just got too "carried away".

If you need a movie to "lift" your spirits and "lighten" an evening with friends, I recommend this movie. I have to stop this review now because I'm running out of puns.

I saw this film about 5 years ago, but my friend Rob just did a review of it and reminded me of how skilled Rhys Ifans (pronounced Reese Eevans) truly is. I was blown away by his performances in "Vanity Fair" and "Notting Hill". Everytime I see "Notting Hill" I laugh hysterically...( read more) at his role as the flat mate. He played SUCH a freaky character in that film. It seems to be what he looks for in choosing his roles. Eccentric and eclectic must be favorite characteristics of his.
