Wow. A wonderful celebration of rootlessness. And Carina Lau is a true Chinese sex symbol. Seein Leslie Cheung in any movie is always depressin now...

In the Mood for 2046. Only just hints at what is to come from Wong Kar Wai. Heavy with atmosphere and loathesome characters.

This film has an utterly intoxicating atmosphere of 60's Hong Kong. Looking back at WKW's career, this is definitely his most important film. This is the film in which Wong Kar Wai became Wong Kar Wai. The cast is spetacular, especially the late Leslie Cheung, whose character ...( read more)has the magnetic charisma that emulates the likes of James Dean. The cinematography of Chris Doyle is not as mind blowing as his later collaborations with WKW, but it is more subtle. Wong Kar Wai sets up his template for his future masterpieces. Doyles cinematogrophy adds a great layer and texture to the piece. A very honest film about unrequited love that proves that a simple story with well-constructed characters works much more effectively than what we see in Wong's most films: a lot of fancy ribbons wrapping up emptiness.

An interesting but not outstanding piece from Wong Kar-Wai. The characters are interesting but rarely sympathetic; but the shots are gorgeous, and the period and setting are intriguing.

Again, I cant get past how gorgeous LCheung is/was. Great story & characters. With ALau & MCheung. Luv WKW always.
