James O'Ehley, Sci-Fi Movie Page
The game is always better and Dead Space: Downfall is no exception.

Steve "Uncle Creepy" Barton, Dread Central
There's nothing bright and sunny about Dead Space: Downfall. It's brutal, unrelenting, and savage. Bodies are torn, eviscerated, and mutilated ... This is no kids' show.

This might be one of the funniest films I've ever watched. Hey, you ever seen an Alien movie? Or a horror film? Or a long list of cliches on a website? Than you've seen this movie. The plot's construction and the list of set pieces literally read like an inept horror handbook. There is not a single element of the plot you can't predict at least 5 to 15 minutes in advance, the characters receive no time to develop. The only plus that anyone has ever noted about this film is the gore, but even that's not particularly great. The animation is beyond poor, with some of the laziest art direction of all time and some of the stiffest animation you'll ever see. On top of all of this, the CGI backdrops and sequences look worse than the videogame they're based on. I wish that was a joke. Now, at this point, anyone who reads this might be wondering, what's up with the 3-star rating (seems a little high)? Well, if you get a friend or a group of friends together to watch this mess, you'll have a blast, I almost guarantee it. I certainly did. This is riffing material unlike any other. Highly recommended in that capacity. However, if you were hoping for a dark and brilliant preamble to "Dead Space," don't seek this out.

Just a poorly animated and terribly written rip-off of so many space set horrors. Most notably the Alien saga. The animation is jolty and is certainly missing frames. This doesn't work well during the action scenes and there is no fluidity. The characters are complete abominations. The protagonist is one of the most unlikable cunts I've ever seen on film. She questions her superiors, disobeys orders, risks humanities existence, talks down to everyone, and solves all her problems by punching people. After which, she then expects them to play along. How we were ever expected to root for such a character is way beyond me. Not only this, but during one attack scene non of the soldiers fire their weapons. Big multi-armed zombie aliens are attacking her friends and everyone stands around like impotent retards. Finally we have a script that is painful in every sense of the word. The dialog is so cringe worthy. "I'm not a hero, just a man." Vomit. Everything the main character says is filled with anger and venom, so you wonder how she achieved anything in her career. The film gets a few points for gore, as it was great to see these characters ripped apart, as that meant I didn't have to look or listen to them anymore.

It's ok to pass 90mins or there abouts, but it ain't going to win any awards. As gory as they could make it, but lacking any real quality either with the script or animation.

Straight forward, gory animated horror/sci-fi hybrid. You've seen it all before, but if you like this sort of thing it will hold your attention.

Which I might have been able to overlooked if the animation was interesting, but even that seemed sort of rehashed.

This useless movie does nothing for fans of that game or anyone new to the Dead Space universe. The animation is lousy. The story exists only so that heaping amounts of blood and gore can be sprayed across the screen. You actually learn more about what happened on the Ishimura from the game. You see the artifact being extracted and how the alien species gets on board the ship. But without having played the game, you won't understand why the relic was brought on board, or its religious significance to the unitologists (a religion that the film assumes you're familiar with). There are some allusions to the game, but even as a fan of the game, they didn't make me at all giddy.
The focus is on a security team sent to investigate why so many colonists are being killed, and the result is what Aliens would have been if it sucked.

Story-wise, this is the standard "alien took over our spaceship" plot with no new twists and the crew making the same lame decisions which ultimately mean their demise.
Visually, there's some great animated gore and a consistent design aesthetic for the ship and technology. I don't know if anything in this will ruin the game, but as it's such a simplistic often done story, I don't expect it could ruin much. Absolutely nothing new or inventive here, but may be fun on an intoxicated weekend night.
To clarify for horror fans, this is NOT a zombie movie. There is one character that stays zombie-ish, but everyone else warps into space creatures.

My only problem with this movie is that there is no climax to it and with very little build-up to the horrific violence throughout none of the gore is unexpected or surprising. I expect everyone to die ten minutes in and my expectations are embraced by the movie chopped-in-half-heartedly. I'm not saying it wasn't terrifying to watch stock space warrior number seven get her head chopped in half by her fellow lunatic crew member.... wait no I am saying that.
This movie is terrifying in how horrifying and grotesque it is but with little substance and devoid of lovable or memorable characters. It is ten times better than the Anthony Johnston graphic novel of the same story in that it doesn't repeat the word "fuck" more than goodfellas like the comic. I like the word fuck but the comic overused it and on that note I took Downfall much more serious than the Joe Pesci inspired script of Anthony Jonston's fuck book, "Dead Fuck."

While I wasn't screaming or closing my eyes, I WAS loudly cussing out the characters the duration of the film. I enjoyed it because it scared me without leaving me an emotional heap shaking in the corner, lol. I was against watching this film at first because it just seemed like a knock-off of Aliens, in fact I STILL feel like the creators of this movie stole the plot from Aliens, but I still greatly enjoyed this film. And I'm not even a horror movie buff. So if you want a little animated gore and horror, give it a look-see.
