The previews of this looked awesome.
I can't wait to see this flick. I love action packed thrillers and Jason Statham's a great one for the leading role.
Pretty tragic remake looks to drag an awesome classic through the mud!! Made the mistake of casting Jason Statham, who resembles an angry potato!
The victims were Pedestrians in the original, and they equaled points! Not convicts on an ego trip. It was intentionally comic book acting, with ballsy gruesome scenes thrown in!!
In contrast, this looks like poor scripting, cheap actors, an a sad attempt to cash in on a cult classics heritage
I saw the trailer, and there is zero "kill pedestrians for points" stuff, not to mention it's directed by Paul WS Anderson, and starring Jason "Van Damme's lost clone" Statham.
So, in other words, fuck this shit. If you are part of the 15 year old fanbase that keeps giviing Anderson a career please go hang yourself.
Like most things coming out of Hollywood these days, Death Race is a remake. But then again, I didn't like the first. It felt like Cannonball Run with random death. Although killing the pedestrians for random points was great... wow that's sad. Anyway, I think this actually looks better. I don't hate W.S. Anderson, I just think he needs to stop doing video game flicks... I'll give it a shot.
Paul W.S. Anderson's not exactly known for making high-brow art (that's another Paul Anderson, if you consider movies about porn stars and oil tycoons high brow art), but I enjoyed Alien Vs Predator, which I still feel is an underrated little popcorn slugfest.
Maybe I'll enjoy his latest offering, if I ignore the fact that it has the same title, but absolutely no other resemblance, to a certain other movie starring Sylvester Stallone.
Yes I know it will turn out to be an awful, pointless remake; but from the trailer I see that it has armed-to-the-teeth and heavily armoured cars, the classic Side 1, Track 1 'Welcome to the Jungle' by Guns N' Roses and of course, the mighty Jason Statham!
Death Race Summary:
The Transporter star Jason Statham takes the wheel in director Paul W.S. Anderson's remake of the Roger Corman classic about a hyper-violent cross-country race that breaks all of the traditional rules of the road. Co-stars include Joan Allen, Ian McShane and Tyrese Gibson, who takes over the role of Machine Gun Joe, made famous by Sylvester Stallone in the original.
