Sarah and her mother work as servants on a farm in Northern Ireland, run by an old widower and his two sons. Not long after the patriarch drowns in a storm at sea, the two brothers begin to fall in love with the strong-willed Sarah. The older brother is gentle and attentive, while his younger sibling is physical and mostly silent. Sarah responds to both men, taking each one as a lover. Her mother soon leaves to return home, but Sarah stays behind and sets up house with her two lovers. This arrangement stirs up quite a bit of talk in the small Presbyterian town. But a real scandal erupts when Sarah becomes pregnant by one of the men. She refuses to marry either brother and relinquish her freedom. Despite religious and societal pressures, Sarah remains stedfast in her beliefs. Giving the child her own name, she continues to live her life the way she wants -- until eighteen years later, when her daughter makes a very difficult request.
