  The captain of a ship for hire is caught between a crew of mercenaries out to rob a luxury liner in the South China Sea and a plague of huge sea creatures with a taste for human flesh. An early outing by low brow crowd pleaser Steven "The Mummy" Sommers, Deep Rising is an enjoyably unpretentious creature feature containing the usual blend of big guns, dark corridors and gory deaths. Sommers is as adept as always at keeping the action cracking along at a fair old pace, never pausing for anything so trite as tension or character development and despite the fact that the effects have dated somewhat, the monsters are actually quite cool (the scene when one of the mercenaries is spilled out onto the deck by a wounded creature is a highlight!) The characters are the usual action movie stereotypes, but Treat Williams is fun as a kind of watered down Ash from Evil Dead 2 and I actually laughed out loud a couple of times. Famke Janssen is also a treat for the eyes and Anthony Heald is amusing as the obligatory back stabbing weasel and although the dialogue is little more than samples from the A to Z of lame one liners it's quite good fun. Trash, but entertaining trash.

  Excellent monster mash and over the top riot of sea faring proportions which borrows from afew films but keep its tongue firmly in its cheek as a no bars hold B-movie. The way the plot unravels is much like 'Aliens' with a mish mash crew of cut throat mercs and civilians being surprised and taken down one by one by an unexplained sea beastie, the casting is unique and perfect for the posse of renegades who each have their own quirks and style which, again, does remind you of the classic marines from 'Aliens'. Its a very silly and obvious layout but Sommers doesn't try to hide this fact and goes all out with nice scares and some nasty gut churning makeup and cgi for the victims. The cgi does now look pretty dated and there is some really nasty blue screen effects but at the time this felt so good and really impressed, I saw the film on release at the cinema back in 1998 and I enjoyed then as I do now. Your typical popcorn flick with nothing to worry about in terms of depth, probably one of the best ensemble casts for awhile in a B-movie and a really terrific creature all add to a fun time. The text at the start gets you thinking about the deep for real and the ending is great stuff haha why no sequel??

  Why was there so much hate for this movie when it came out? It's definitely a fun flick with a solid B supporting cast. I mean how can you go wrong with Treat Williams, Famke Jansen, Djimon Honsou, Jason Flemyng and Anthony Heald?

  Deep Rising is the type of film that you watch simply to have a good time. When Writer, director Stephen Sommers set to create this film, he knew he wanted it to be a fun Sci Fi Horror action adventure, and this is what it is. Taking a elements from many monster films, including, Tremors and Alien; Sommers has crafted a flawed, yet enjoyable film for the Horror fan. This is a B movie with big production values, and top notch special effects. Deep Rising's Strength to entertain dwells on the terrific special effects done by Horror effects master, Rob Bottin (The Thing). His effects are terrific and the creature looks scary as hell, that you'll most likely jump out of your seat quite a few times. The actors that Sommers picked are a decent bunch, but they don't deliver anything memorable on screen. Deep Rising is a monster flick, and thus, in this case, the monster is the star and the rest of the cast are co stars. No actor here delivers anything memorable, but nonetheless, you enjoy it when they become monster food. The film is obviously an homage to all the great monster flicks, and it shows. The creature here is almost directly lifted from Tremors. But in the end, who cares? Deep Rising may have ripped off a lot of the best Horror films such as Tremors and Alien, but it does something fun the process, with action, scares, tongue in cheek performances, this is a good action horror film worth watching to have a good time and have a few scares in the process. Stephen Sommers wanted to make a fun action horror film with B movie flair, and he pulled it off. The fact that this is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously and presents itself as a tongue in cheek action horror film, makes this film better than what most people have said about it.

  Deep Rising might not be a classic horror/action movie along with others such as Jaws or The Sixth Sense, but it's still a good movie. Really, it's more of a B-movie than a regular blockbuster. It's about some hijackers that board a rich cruise ship hoping to find some jewelry, but they soon find out that some mysterious monster has killed most of the passengers. The two groups of people eventually have to join forces once they all see the monster and know that it's what's making all the other people disappear mysteriously. The constructor of the cruise ship is also on board and helps everybody by telling them which way they need to go to escape from the octopus. Deep Rising is one of the best B-movies to come out in a long time. The suspense is the best part of it and the special effects are also good. Unlike many movies, when you finally get to see the monster up close, it's not a disappointment. Joey is hilarious and gives the movie a comedy twist that makes it even better. All the way from the first sign of the monster to the end sequence where Treat Williams and Famke Jennsen have to ride a jet ski to get away from the monstrous explosions of the ship, Deep Rising is non-stop action and suspense. If you like horror/action movies with a lot of suspense and non-stop action sequences, give Deep Rising a chance. NOTE: That was my Amazon review from the year 2000. Wow, I was so passionate about it back then! It's great for how low it flew under the radar of movie fans, though, seriously.

It is also an R-rated b monster movie, meaning that it has the chance to get a little gory, which is nice. The movie does not take itself seriously at all, which helps, plus a surprisingly strong supporting cast of character actors. The movie is fairly entertaining to watch, even if it doesn't make much sense at all. Pantucci: I think she broke my nose! Trillian St. James: Give me a chance and I'll break the rest of your face. Not that anyone would notice. Pantucci: What is this about?

  This movie isn't so bad with the budget that it seemed to have had. There are quite a bunch of recognizable faces in here and that is what probably sells it the most. I can really picture this movie being a dud if it had never-before seen actors in it. There is a moderate amount of action in it with some pretty fancy guns. When it comes to the story it is nothing really special. You've probably seen stories like this in any other monster/horror flick. This movie isn't actually scary at all, it is actually quite funny with some humorous acting and dialogue written in. If your in the mood for a good sci-fi action film then pick this up.

  I haven't had much luck with movies recently, as I've been extremely bored with all of them, this included. What I did like, is that it was fairly gory and the effects weren't actually too bad (compared with the rubbish CGI used today). The acting was horrible. The hippie dude's voice annoyed me a lot and I wished they'd made him mute instead. The dialogue was lame too (it was meant to be, but it didn't work well). Um... there was a fair amount of action, but not enough to get me overly excited. The end 'romance' bit was just stupid, as although it was obvious it would happen, there was no build-up or any point to it. The very end of it though, was a good idea, and so besides the romance bit, I liked the ending. And that's all I have to say.
