Still they can be some point to arrange to make it perfect, for a 1991 movie, it's still really amazing for the set, the artistic direction, the realisation and of course the story that is not afraid to go in all new and special direction for a really good and interesting movie. Some scene are quite priceless and the attention that they put in the sound of everything make it even better.
tim burton has johnny depp, while jean pierre jeunet has dominique pinon... great movie to say the least, maybe i am a little biassed since it is jeunet, but i can't help it, he's a genius for setting that sort of tall tale mood
What a crazy, off-the-wall, bizarre, hilarious, illogical, irrational, delight of a motion picture this was. Having previously seen Amelie and City of Lost Children, I had a good idea what to expect from Delicatatessen, Jeunet and Caro's first film. I thought it was going to be an extremely disturbing movie seeing as though it's about a serial killing deli owner, but I found it oddly charming. As are most of their films. Sure, a lot of the film doesn't make a whole lot of sense but there's a certain burst of energy, fun and originality the movie has that can't be beat by many other filmmakers. Also, some sequences are pretty damn hilarious. The acting is solid as are with most Jeunet and Caro's films, the scene-stealer being of course Dominique Pinon who you may remember as the clones in City of Lost Children. Pinon brings real humanity to his character, and is always fun to watch. The actor who plays the deli owner is really good as is the actress who plays the deli owner's daughter. The film's cinematography is eye-opening as well. My only complaint is the film is very hard to follow at points. Grade: B
Another treat. Full to the gills with the exiting imaginings of Juenet. Pinon's performance is filled with the spirit of Chaplin an is all the more touching and comedic for it.
I'd read how inventive, and entertainingly surreal this one was, and well I like cannibal movies so I was pretty easily enticed. It didn't hurt that this nearly has an 8.0 rating on IMDB which is pretty much unheard of for any sort of horror film. This was of course before I saw the film and realized that the horror is mainly suggestive and it's more of a surrealist black comedy than anything. That wouldn't be so bad but a lot of French humor I guess I just don't get.
The film is set in the future where food is scarce and society is a mess...I think. See none of this is explained, we are only to piece things together with what we see. This future has groups of folks who dwell underground called troglodytes. The story however takes place in this beat up apartment building where the owner, a butcher is feeding off of tenants unable to pay rent and folks who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time (we really don't get to see much with this unfortunately).
He also has a young daughter who lives in the building and is really sweet. Her father hires a new likeable handyman (who is a former clown) and he falls for his daughter. Of course things don't go well in this situation and it ends up in quite the mess towards the end of the movie (which I shouldn't spoil). Most of the entertaining moments come from this woman in the building who repeatedly tries to commit suicide in clever ways, but never seems to win the battle. It is shot very surrealistically and it is interesting to watch in that regard. Certainly many details were thought of and the atmosphere is rather intriguing.
Actually it seems as though tons of work and detailing were put into the film, but it really did lack further explanation not to mention it is really tame when you boil everything down. Still this will vastly appeal to some, and others are going to walk away disappointed, I think it's just one of those films that can't please everyone and doesn't try to.
Great film made in Jeunet's (and Caro's) vision on magical surrealism and a well made cinematography-art decoration mixure to create a unique atmosphere, such as the work in Amélie. They directed it to perfection, though it has some similarities to Gilliam's Brazil, it's kinda unique in its style. It also treats a fashionable theme nowadays: the apocalyptic future that is aheading some years from now, when food will be even more important than a human life, and insanity is all over the place. Very good.
A very weird story that is reminding me a bit of his other film "La Cité des enfants perdus", but with its own style. Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a very good director, he knows what he want to show/tell you and how to achieve it. This picture is not for everyone but if you are daring and usually like his films, you should enjoy it!
It breaks my heart to give a Jeunet movie a mere two stars. (He directed two of my favourite movies of all time.) However, no matter how much I dug the cannabilism and clowns, I simply could not get behind this film. While it has been acclaimed for being unique, it serves as a great reminder that unique is not synonymous with good. While it has the colourful, beautiful scenes that Jeunet has become known for, I had trouble connecting with the characters, and by the end, I felt like I was watching nothing more than a bad horror flick. Thank goodness Jeunet redeemed himself later on.
What else to expect from this dream team-up than a masterpiece? Delicatessen is a fabuously toned film, the best sequence being the "sounds" montage. Just great. Have to see it if you have any interest in scifi, dystopian films, Jeunet's work, or solid films in general.
Hilarious French film about post-apocalyptic apartment dwelling cannibals who target a former clown for the delicatessen. Great cinematography, clever comedy, endearing performances.
what a little low profile nice film ,filled with many beautiful and weird stories , while a warm sarcasm { ok , i tell like it } touch softly hole the story ...soundtrack recomented
Les films de ciné, litt. ont la popularité de pas trop être appréciés:P, mais ce fim là est assez.. weard^^
du même réalisateur qu'Amélie Poulain, j'ai beaucoup moins aimé celui-ci.
The story is centered on a microcosm of a post-apocalyptic society where food is so rare it's invaluable and is used as currency. The story centers on an apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor. The owner of the eatery also owns the apartment building and he is in need of a new maintenance man since the original "mysteriously" disappeared. A former clown applies for the job and the butcher's intent is to have him work for a little while and then serve him to quirky tenants who pay the butcher in, of course, grain. The clown and butcher's daughter fall in love and she tries to foil her father's plans by contacting the "troglodytes", a grain eating sub-group of society who live entirely underground. The "trogs" are possibly the most sensible of the lot, as they see food as food and not money
From the makers of Amelie, comes this Terry Gilliam like film which surpasses my expectations. Thoroughly enjoyed it by the end, despite its cannibalistic themes. It is incredibly similar to The League of Gentlemen series, which is what I was thinking about during the film. Like The League of Gentlemen, what you are watching is funny, but because of the dark comedy elements, you?re not necessarily going to laugh. What I also loved was the fact what I was witnessing was incredibly original. The story may not be entirely engaging, but the brilliant cinematography, actors, script just makes you pay attention to every frame of the film-also due to the fact of the extraordinary landscape within the film, which could be compared to Gilliam?s Brazil. The dark side of some of the characters are incredibly well scripted and make you laugh and laugh.
Delicatessen is set around a post-holocaust France, where there is a food shortage and of course a rumour of cannibalism. Every character, as I?ve said before is scripted well and almost mirrors that of your average village folk. For instance ?the Butcher? is referred to as ?the Butcher? and the same for the postman, which almost makes these characters as objects in the film rather than your more humane characters. The character of Lousisen is, as a typical ?village? cliché?, an outsider. This outsider poses a problem for the character of the Butcher. Immediately the viewer associates itself with the character of
Louisen as you are a guest into this fantasy like world. Anything that comes across him, you almost feel what he is experiencing during the film.
One of the key features of the film is the claustrophic atmosphere, as everything is set in one building. From the lady who hears voices, The Butcher who kills people for food, the the man with the frogs and the daughter of The Butcher, everything is amongst this tiny building. The camera shots here are also what makes the film. The quick editing, especially in one scene in particular adds to the comic value and almost makes you laugh as what you see in front of you, is unlike anything you?ve seen. On that note how many films have you seen which contains a bullshit detector, when incidentally is shown when the Butcher is asked is opinion on life! The atmosphere around the building is yellow, again which adds to the surrealism of the piece. You almost feel like it?s a dream of some sort. The acting is this is top notch. From Jean-Claude Dereyfuss? performance as The Butcher, Dominique Pinon as Louisen and Marie-Laure Dougnac as Julie all contribute to one hilarious film which I laughed an awful lot. In particular Dreyfuss is possibly the real star of the film. Despite his character being The Butcher, he delivers one hell of a performance which is the core of the film. I?m not quite sure what to say or how to describe it as it was just so funny. As I?ve said before, Delicatessen is visually perfect. From the near shot perfect opening, to the hilarious scene in the middle of the film, which I don?t want to give too much away.
I have to admit that I?m not familiar with the two directors or some of the actors in the film, but for sure I will look out for their work in the future. I saw Amelie first and abolutly adored it and will try and get my hands on ?A Very Long Engagement? when I can. Delicatessen is a wonderfully crafted film which some very funny moments. It may not be for everyone but once you watch it you won?t stop.
