Director John Boorman's powerful and gripping film based on James Dickey's best selling novel. About four businessmen who set out on a whitewater rafting trip down a wild Georgia river, but their adventure soon becomes a nightmare of survival when they encounter two demented hill...( read more)billie mountain men and there innocent nature trip turns into a life and death struggle lace with murder. Fascinating and highly suspenseful throughout with beautiful cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond. Superbly acted by the entire cast particularly Burt Reynolds in the finest dynamic performance of his career as the strong-willed leader of the men and Jon Voight in a marvelous performance as the sensitive man who finds he wants to release his primitive instincts when his life is at sake. John Boorman's brilliant direction has triumphantly turned Dickey's acclaimed novel into a thrilling and inspired work of cinematic art. Highly Recommended.

A great adventure film with some disturbing scenes at times.
  • December 11, 2009
You can see that many of the modern movies copy some scenes of old classics like this one. Pity really.
  • December 5, 2009
Famous for two scenes, the dueling "banjos" and the squeal like a pig scene, there is actually a pretty good movie around those two scenes as well. A really good cast that had really showed their talents and intensity in this movie, it was something I could not turn away from. Th...( read more)e scenery was actually quite nice to look at as well. I like how the movie became dramatic after the action sequences showing the after effect of what happened, unlike most movies that contain action scenes. Classic.

    Disappointed!

I finally saw this cult movie (a few weeks ago on DVD), after having heard (more read) so many things about it, since years; even decades.
    Another classic disappointing me...
    :(
I can't understand it's so often quoted as a reference.
I can't understand it's so ofte...( read more)n named for its violence, when it's in fact 1% of a Saw or Hostel.
    Sure, different times, but:
1st, we still hear about it as a violence's reference, and
2d, at this time, there were already films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or a few years later Alien, Friday the 13th, Halloween... who all are so much more violent, physically AND psychologically.
And there were movies worst (in that sense) also before, way before.
Yeah, I definitely most admitt I waited more violence from it.
But I of course can rate 5/5 a romantic comedy, without anything violent or even negative, dark, so, it's not only cause of missing blood that I rate it like this.

It's not at all a bad movie (otherwise, why would I rate it 2,5/5? After all, it's the average, so, a pretty good rating already)!
    So, the good points are:
    1) The atmosphere, mostly in the beginning, in the arrival to the village, who made me think to The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Rob Zombie's movies; and so, made me believe I'll simply love the film.
    2) The beautiful, wonderful landscapes, making me pray to be in 1 day, and making me miss rafting a lot.
    3) The raft scenes, making think to the better film The River Wild is.
    4) Seeing Jon Voight so young (even if he isn't 1 of my favs at all). I think I otherwise saw him only in a few great recent movies like Anaconda or Tomb Raider.
    5) The excellent music they play. 1 of our 4 adventurers with the retarded child. A great moment of the film. Maybe the best!

Recommanded to the lovers of nature, fans of Voight and/or Reynolds, but not specially to the horror or thrillers lovers.

I cant say that its a feel good movie, but this one will seer its way into your head for days. Not a bad movie... minus one pig scene. You'll find out.

I personally did not like most of the movie and don't see the hype in it. Kind of boring.
  • November 1, 2009
An excellent piece of film making, but the "squeel piggy, squeel" scene isn't one that you'll forget in a hurry. A great cast and a tense, gritty thriller.

not worth the time spent watching it.

    DELIVERANCE (1072)
directed by John Boorman (Hell in the Pacific)
featuring Burt Reynolds, John Voight, Ned Beatty, and Bill McKinney
from the novel by James Dickey

Four urban rednecks head for the Georgia mountains to canoe "the last wild, untamed, unpolluted, unf***ed-up rive...( read more)r" they know of. The quartet pride themselves on having an adaptive survivalist mentality that will readily lend itself to any doomsday scenario. It is their intention to have a good time, but the locals have other plans for them.

The city slickers find out the hard way that the type of people who will survive a disaster are those already living through one, i.e. living in horrid conditions, able to drink dirty water, etc, And they don't take kindly to freewheeling tourists who venture into a place the locals would do anything to escape, from a home they would trade anything to have.

    DELIVERANCE - Bill McKinney

An excellent and brutal thriller from John Boorman. It?s a classic, all that?s missing is Burt Reynolds?s moustache! 'Squeal like a piggy boy'!
  • September 18, 2009
A quite and beautiful trip to death. Deliverance, mainly applaused because of its shock value, bizarre plot and great cinematography, is a unique masterpiece to watch. With a great cast and unexpected moments (if you're not told the plot beforehand), this classic American gem may...( read more) push the envelope for some viewers. It did back in the 70's. Although under modern standards it may not be a disturbing film, it is psychologically. This film has a great talent in the building of suspense and the creation of a peaceful atmosphere contrastingly surrounded by violence, madness and chaos. Some unpleasant Hollywood elements concerning action, but great overall. Influential and unique.

    85/100

  • September 5, 2009

  • August 30, 2009

  • August 17, 2009
Hard to imagine a movie more disturbing than this one. The hopelessness that comes in the movie is amazingly profound.

    Amazing, amazing movie.
  • August 10, 2009
This was one weird movie! seeing Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and Ned Beatty so young was a treat. If you're in the mood for something outta the norm, then give this one a view.
  • August 9, 2009
    The South smells! LOL
  • August 5, 2009
Great thriller. This film is about a canoe camping trip gone wrong. I thought it had a lot of suspense when they are in trouble and they try to figure out what to do. Voight, Reynolds, and Beatty were an outstanding cast. Boorman did a great job producing and directing.
  • August 2, 2009
Creepy, disturbing, and unforgettable. Deliverance packs a punch big enough to knock out an Elephant. It starts of nice an smoothly, and then it becomes almost a horror movie. You can tell while watching Deliverance how director John Booreman's direction has been copied, or has i...( read more)nfluenced later thrillers. The performances are all great, with Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight shining in their roles.

I don't think I can say anything about this that has not already been said. I will leave it at that.
  • July 25, 2009
Very weird but I found Burt Reynolds pretty sexy in this movie. I usually hate hairy men! Great story about moral dilemmas.
  • July 22, 2009
I still will never be the same
  • July 15, 2009
pretty classic. Liked the movie, the rape seen was brutal though

  • July 3, 2009
A suspense masterpiece. One of the most horrifying films I've ever seen.
  • June 26, 2009
The guitar music was cool :P The film however was a tad on the slow side for me, but I can see how it became so popular because the actors are very good, and there are some disturbing scenes. Overall just not for me I guess.
  • June 18, 2009

  • April 28, 2009
SIILL the reason some people refuse to go camping or go down a river!! By far one of my all time favorite movies.
  • April 21, 2009
This is a very good film. But not as frighten as everyone makes out it to be. The hillbillies are very scary though, as thery look so different from the city guys.
  • April 18, 2009
OK, we all know what Deliverance is remembered for. Doing a simple search for images on Google proved that. We all know about "squeal like a pig" and Jon Voight having a pretty mouth. Let's get beyond that now and discuss what is a powerful film about men and nature or we can tal...( read more)k about urbanites vs. countryites. It doesn't matter much because this film is full of conflict.

Deliverance has one of my favorite tag lines of all time: This was the weekend they didn't play golf. What they actually did this weekend was go on a canoe trip in an undisturbed stretch of river- undisturbed for the time being because the power company is about to dam it up and create a huge lake for hydroelectric power. This is their last chance to ride real nature as they go into the mountains of Georgia amongst people who see indoor plumbing as a myth akin to man walking on the moon.

The friends consist of Lewis (Burt Reynolds) who us your typical mans man, declaring that he doesn't carry insurance because there's no risk. Most of the first half of the film is Lewis lamenting about the system and its impending failure, causing him to learn how to survive. Ed (Jon Voight) is a more laid back personality. He knows his ways around the woods but isn't hell bent on being the alpha male of the group. Ronny Cox plays Drew, a guitar playing all around nice guy who has deep moral beliefs. You can't not like the guy. Finally there's Bobby (Ned Beatty), the insurance agent that's totally out of his element in a canoe in the middle of nowhere.

Throughout the film there are sprinkled various hillbilly characters, many of which were played by the actual people in the area. This is an area that's been barely disturbed since Sherman went home, other than automobiles. It's isolated as hell to the extent that the group could have traveled to Mars. That's the first step to their downfall. As the film progressed the dread builds until Ed has to finally become an animal and kill or be killed. They realize what they've gotten into only when it's too late.

The main cast is excellent with the real stand out being Burt Reynolds in his first major role. This is probably the best role of his career as he plays Lewis to be almost Moses-like, sending down his parables on survival and life. Reynolds was born for the role of Lewis. Beatty also gives a great performance as Bobby, not because of the "pig" scene, but because of after the "pig" scene. You feel for him more in the aftermath than you do when it's happening which stands as a real testament to his portrayal.

Directed by John Boorman, Deliverance has an almost down home feel when being shot. What's fascinating about the film is who is the real villain in this film. The mountain men? The river? The boys themselves? It's hard to establish, which makes the film so damn good. Deliverance is one of those films where one piece overshadows the entire film. The title is a joke usually associated with being in the middle of nowhere amongst people without iPods and cell phones. Deliverance delivers a heart pounding weekend that slowly flows into hell.

    One word...Squeel!
Voight & Reynolds. Voight iz awsum in this; hero. Gud film, worth wochin, strangely directed yet very clever!
  • April 14, 2009
IF you hear those banjos....run like hell!
  • April 13, 2009
Bows & Arrows and other things make this movie worth watching..
  • April 12, 2009
almost wholesome by modern standards. A condemnation of the legal systems machinery. These guys would love to tell the truth of what happened to them, but know they would be destroyed and demonized by the Law if they did, so they have to lie..
  • April 10, 2009
memorable,.. and i'm not talking about the anal rape "squeal piggy. piggy squeal!" part... hahahaha. however it's ultimately average except for the odd scene that will scar your mind
  • April 10, 2009
Four city slickers go on a canoeing holiday in the backwaters of Georgia when they are attacked by a pair of gun toting mountain men. This sounds like a typical stalker-horror movie, but John Boorman brings a gritty realism to it that makes it all the more disturbing. Principally...( read more) about the arrogance of civilized man (or more accurately, men) the four show little regard or respect for the locals, leading to a particularly grim encounter when they are completely stripped of the control over their own lives that they previously took for granted. Burt Reynolds shaves off his trademark moustache and takes a break from redneck comedies to deliver a career best performance as the alpha male of the group as they fight for survival in a hostile environment. Most memorable for the dueling banjos (nicely showing that these "backward" people are capable of great skill) and the grimly uncomfortable "squeal piggy" scene, this film has lost some of its shock factor, but is still a powerful and gripping watch.

An interesting film. A bit long but stil very powerfull. Especially if u consider when it was made... Difficuly shots, nice landscapes and a good story.

Take a look if u find it.
  • April 4, 2009
All time Reynolds classic, gripping action thriller - features the iconic Duelling Banjo's duet.
