Over the top action at it's finest. Lot's of badass characters doing badass things. You can't really expect more from it than that or you will be disappointed.
Great action, sharp knives and big guns, love story, very good music,a little bit of humour, surreal violence that seems almost choreographic...this movie has it all!
Great sequel to El Mariachi, and I cant wait to see the last in the trilogy. Banderas plays the part of the mariachi well. Lots of gore again, but the storyline shines through making this an enjoyable movie.
Rodriguez really knows how to make an action flick. It's simple enough, the man is a genius with action films. Antonio Banderas has never been as badass as he was in this film. El Mariachi is such a bad motherfucker. Than Salma Hayek looking good and killing some people which is a nice bonus. Than Joaquim De Almeida is very good as drug lord, Bucho. Check out for cameos by Quentin Tarantino, Cheech Marin, Steve Buscemi and the debut of Danny Trejo.
I really don't care what the critics might've said about this film. But, personally, I think that this movie's just great. I can't really choose a proper word to best describe it, but I just love the over-all "feel" of this film. The jaded angst and aphathy of it just really appealed to me. Not only that, I think that their can be no better actor to play the lead role of this film than Antonio Banderas. Lastly, the whole premise of the film was just genius.
Desperado is a zesty action thriller that recycles the best of the B genres and rolls them into a big-budget, pistol-packing extravaganza that in its best moments leaves you breathless with wonder.
Banderas is simply incredible in his role as the man of few words and many bullets, he oozes sexual charisma and strength. The supporting cast is strong all around, especially a wily Steve Buscemi as the Mariachi's friend.
Its stylish and intriguing right from the opening scenes, its a great big assault weapon with the trigger squeezed hard
Desperado is a wonderfully exciting and hypnotic action film -- It's violence as a dance.
not a great follow up to el mariachi, actually a remake of el mariachi, shot on bigger budget, although not to big, banderas is watchable as the lead, and salma hayak, as usuall is absolutly stunning
Desperado has always been a favorite of mine. I love the action. I love the story. If you haven't seen it, you really should. One of Rodriguez' shinning moments. But you must see the first movie, El Mariachi. Even though it isn't as great, its the film that comes before Desperado and gives more meaning to the whole story.
Man, thanks Robert Rodriguez. I'll never say sh*t about you again.
Until I see Spy Kids, but that's just because I'm heartless. (Who am I kidding, I'm a pushover. I'll probably love Spy Kids. I mean, the third one's in 3D!)
I had a hard time with El Mariachi. Since then, I've been informed by multiple snobs, I mean, people that it was done on $8000.00 and all in one take. Yes, I can appreciate that, but I'd much rather see multiple takes and a bigger budget to a movie like this. That's what Desperado gave me. And it made me happy.
The opening of Desperado was one of my favorite openings in a while. Steve Buschemi was a delightful surprise in this film. I honestly wasn't expecting him and having him narrate the story was just pitch-perfect. The movie just takes off from there. I also have to say that Antonio Banderas can make me laugh. He brings that right level of bad-ass spoofery to make me really follow every aspect of this movie. Sure, he's almost not even the old character, even remotely. But who cares? This really is its own movie. Now I reallly want to watch Once Upon a Time in Mexico all over again just so I can appreciate that. (I now know why I hated it in the theatre. You really need to get this one before moving onto that one!)
This is me being a sleaze though. Holy sh*t. Salma Hayek sex scene. Yes, gratuitous, but thank you, Robert Rodriguez. I have little to look forward to in life and now I can go another year or two on that scene alone.
Also, I am now happier about Grindhouse. I didn't realize Machete was referencing this movie with a very similar shot of throwing knives into a limo. That was spectacular. I can't wait for Machete!
This movie defines action entertainment.
It's backed up by good actors, a great soundtrack, and a great landscape.
Steve Buscemi is as always a great support to the cast.
The change to Antonio was smooth enough, although he brings an entirely new attitude to the character. The connections between the movies are tenuous at best anyways, so it doesn't really matter. Seeing Carlos Gallardo as one of the secondary mariachis was great; I'm really happy he was included.
This is a really good film, and I think in a way it is very unique. Apart from its predessesor "El Marichi" it is the first film of its kind, although not as good as the film that followed in the trilogy "Once Upon A Time", which I have rated the 6th best film ever made.
