Though well acted and beautifully crafted, "Devil in a Blue Dress" falls short of being something special because, although the concept of an African American film noir is commendably original and the background climate - of racial prejudice and the post-WWII hangover in L.A. - is fascinating, the actual mystery is pretty run-of-the-mill. The title is a bit of a misnomer because, if anything, Jennifer Beals' femme fatale is not deadly enough, and the movie also lacks a proper bad guy, a larger-than-life, charismatic kingpin: a Sidney Greenstreet or a John Huston; Maury Chaykin's creepy political candidate would have fit the bill nicely but he's only onscreen for a couple of minutes. The unseen events bookending Easy Rawlins' (Denzel Washington) transition from disaffected war veteran to private investigator - namely his former criminal escapades with a trigger-happy associate in Texas (Don Cheadle) versus his further adventures as a fully-fledged gumshoe - unfortunately sound a lot more interesting than the story we are being told, making this feel like a sequel to, or a two-hour trailer for, an even better film.

Another Terrible Acting From Denzel Washington. Also, I Don't Know Why In All Of Denzel's Films, Devils Is Whitey, And Angels Is Blackamoor!

If you like Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Oceans 11) you will like this movie. his first "big break" as the supporting roll to Denzel washington based on the book by Walter Mosely...good plot.

a very good thriller starring denzel washington as small time detective easy rawlins who after coming from serving his duty in world war 11 comes to the realization that finding a job wasnt easy especially when money was scarce. a friend of his gets him a job to find a missing woman who happens to have a relationship with a mobster and was running away from him. Easy rawlinn then meets up with the mobster and realizes he might be over his head with this case especially when it comes to dealing with a violence hot tempered gangster played to perfection from actor tom sizemore. Easy takes the money and the job and goes onto finding the woman. During the movie he encounteres a politician who shows some interest in the woman only to be the woman's abusive husband, a friend who will eventually betray him, an angry mobster who is not only paying him to find his lover but in the end when he does get his woman will kill easy rawlins with no regret and an old friend by name of mouse who was his childhood friends but drifteed apart from each other due to the fact the mouse is a cold blooded killer.

The film is very suspenseful with great direction from carl franklin who year before directed the great bill paxton movie one false move and later direct denzel in another dcent movie called out of time directs this film with a laid back style and ease. Denzel washington is in top form bringing a charm to the character and is supoorted by a very good cast like terry kinney as the senator, jenifer beals as the missing woman, don cheadle as the cold blooded killer named Mouse and tom Sizemore as the cold blooded gangster. The script and cinematography all add up to make this a very memorable piece of cine noir.

    worth checking out and buying.

I read the book which had much more atmosphere and the film unfortunately don't come close to that standard, even if Denzel is one of my favorites and plays really well.

One of my personal favorites. Wish Denzel and Don Cheadle would reprise their roles. Read Walter Moseley's novels if you want in on their further adventurers.

A good hardboiled detective story in the tradition of Chandler and Hammett with Denzel Washington playing a man whose need for money and whose decision to ignore his better instincts lead him to being caught up in a complex spiderweb of murder and blackmail. Good solid story, but Washington is very good as Easy Rawlins, and Don Cheadle is truly great as his hometown friend, Mouse, who is effectively a completely unbalanced psychopath.

Easy Rawlins: A man once told me that you step out of your door in the morning, and you are already in trouble. The only question is are you on top of that trouble or not?

Denzel Washington stars as Ezekial "Easy" Rawlins, a WWII veteran who now owns a house in 1948 LA but has no job. He needs money, and along comes a solution in the form of some PI work given to him by Tom Sizemore's character.

By getting involved, he gets too involved, and is caught up in a back and forth plot involving rival mayoral candidates and various mysterious murders.

The movie is based on a series of noir novels written in the 80s by Walter Mosely, this movie is a lot about combining the So Cal African American Jazz society with the style of neo noir.

It looks great and has a good soundtrack, and that's really what matters.

Washington is good in the role, but Don Cheadle comes in halfway through and steals the entire movie. His character Mouse is a friend from Easy's past, and he is also basically a psychopathic killer. What makes him work is the fact that he's played by Don Cheadle, and that's enough right there.

This is also a very well paced film. As the movie approached the end, I really wasn't very ready for it, because I was enjoying the easy going nature of the movie. Good flick.

Mouse: You said don't shoot him, right? Well I didn't; I choked him... If you didn't want me to kill him, why did you leave me alone with him?

i will admit I watched this movie solely because I was bored and because Denzel was in it. I had no idea what it was about. I was pleasantly surprised because this was a really good film. Interestingly set in the 1940's and great performances by Denzel and Don Cheadle.

Walter Mosley is an exceptional novelist and this is a great flim of his book. Denzel Washington is always good and perfectly cast as Easy Rawlins but Don Cheadle is the best actor around IMO and really captures the manic essence of Mouse. I love the book and I love the film.

I'd watch this movie every day if I could. My favorite performance by Don Cheadle, bar none. Not quite up to the book in terms of Easy Rawlin's wit and grit, but it remains one of my favorites.

Sheer delight. Aside from the fun of quoting the line, "You're hittin' my spot!" there is also the virtuoso performance of Don Cheadle. They should've given him an Oscar for this.

Carl Franklin, best known for ONE FALSE MOVE, does a first-rate job with an adaptation of a well-known novel of the time, and the racial issues are handled with care. Don Cheadle stels every scene he is in, which is pretty amazing when youy consider he plays his scenes with the one and only Denzel Washington, who is in top form in this crime film that easily transcends its genre.

Plot Outline: An Afro-American private detective is hired to find a woman and gets mixed up in a murderous political scandal.
