They wear the latest fashions, drive the nicest cars, have all the possessions they need, and they live on an expansive estate complete with an extravagant mansion, swimming pool, tennis court and all the trappings of wealth--a little piece of paradise away from the city. However, on the eve of their 18th wedding anniversary, Helen's paradise begins to crumble as Charles announces that he wants a divorce. He abruptly and literally tosses Helen out of the mansion to make room for the other woman. With all of her possessions packed in a moving van, Helen starts on her journey to put the pieces of her life back together. Through the assistance of her friends, family, faith, and a twist of fate, Helen finds the strength and empowerment she needs to get control of her circumstances. She also finds that the tragic events of her life soon become comic, especially with the guidance and help-- mostly unsolicited, by the way--of her pot-smoking, gun-toting, and much beloved, grandmother figure Madea.

Dear diary, I saw an awful movie the other night about a woman who is kicked out by her cad husband but finds the strength to persevere. It was totally superficial; couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a drama, romantic comedy, gross-out comedy, or a spiritual; and, most emba...( read more)rrassing of all, the writer cast himself in three roles, including a painfully unfunny gun-toting granny in drag. Sincerely, a mad movie viewer.

They've never been an angry black woman. Tyler Perry did a superb job at pulling out all of the emotions of the barely acknowledged abused black woman. I think that even with all the humor, the movie right on the money in portraying shades of black people that the mast majority o...( read more)f people don't get to see. thoroughly enjoyed the humor and the reality of this movie. Kimberly Elise was powerful. She was very real and I believe that many women can identify with her role in this movie. Often women are tied in relationships oblivious that the world around them has changed. They often have no idea of what to do, when their world comes tumbling down. But this story is so relative and can be identified with in a very positive manner. It gives hope and courage to women who have lived their lives involved only in their spouses shadow without getting an direction for their own lives.Tyler Perry has the unique ability to combine humor with a positive message. A talent that I find extremely rare in Hollywood. Tyler Perry has managed to pull off both funny and serious at the same time.

Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com

Perry doesn't have any delusions of artistry, and potentially, at least, that's refreshing. But any points he earns for lack of pretense are immediately gobbled up by his lack of subtlety. full review

Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

The film itself is a touch insane, veering from comedy to cornball melodrama (and torture!) with such startling alacrity that viewers might laugh and not know if they're supposed to. full review

David Edelstein, NPR's Fresh Air

Half inspired and half eye-rollingly terrible. full review

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

I've been reviewing movies for a long time, and I can't think of one that more dramatically shoots itself in the foot. full review
