Try as he might, Greg just can't understand who thought it was a good idea to place kids who haven't even hit their first growth spurt in the same school as kids who get a five-o'clock shadow by lunch time. Realizing that he'll have to get creative if he hopes to survive until high school, Greg concocts a series of get-cool-quick schemes that all go hopelessly awry. Despite the fact that he's viewed as a dork by his peers, Greg never loses hope that someday, when all is said and done, he'll be able to look back on his middle school experiences and laugh. Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris co-star in this comedy from Hotel for Dogs director Thor Freudenthal. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Critic Reviews
-
Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News
The young cast is all game, and sidekicks Robert Capron and Grayson Russell are a real hoot. Slumber party viewings are inevitable.
-
Lisa Rosman, Time Out New York
Largely avoids the gimmicky saccharine aftertaste that's typical of the genre. Anyone older than the story's resident Job, however, may not find much to write home about.
-
Stephen Cole, Globe and Mail
Too soon though -- maybe 30 minutes in -- audience laughs turn to chuckles, fading to worn smiles.
-
A.O. Scott, New York Times
Looks drab and drained of color, and can't even muster the antic buoyancy of an average episode of iCarly.
-
Tom Long, Detroit News
The problem with Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the wimpy kid is a jerk.
