Critic Reviews

  • Justin Chang, Variety

So jaw-droppingly misguided in its blend of mawkish sentiment and comic relief that it almost elicits one's grudging admiration.

  • Don Willmott, Filmcritic.com

There were plenty of opportunities for originality here, but other than toying with a layer of Asian exoticism, writer Donald Martin doesn't stray far from convention

  • Fr. Chris Carpenter, Movie Dearest

    Too simplistic to be believable.

  • Pete Hammond, Boxoffice Magazine

Overly melodramatic and soap operatic. Very familiar episodic look at a comtemporary Chinese/American family and the gaps that divide them.

  • Ernest Hardy, L.A. Weekly

Director Anna Chi's Chinese-American family drama, from a screenplay by Donald Martin, is ambitious in scope and banal in execution.

I liked this movie. Through the circumstance of their mom's funeral, a Chinese-American family come together for the week-long traditional Chinese funeral. There is a lot to resolve - issues about the siblings relationships, and issues regarding their mother.
