better than when john wayne tried being a cop instead of a cowboy. it's got everything you want in it. the dirty harry character suits clint down to the ground. a couple of good one liners in it. looking forward to seeing the other four

Classic! The granddaddy of mean, lone cop films. It?s very quotable too and has been ripped off too many times. Siegels direction is also very cool, the pan-out from the stadium is one of my favourite scenes ever.

No one can play a bad-ass, squinting anti-hero like Clint Eastwood. Dirty Harry is full of memorable moments that have influenced so many movies that came after it, and it is a true classic of its genre.

The killer, Scorpio, is such a sick and reprehensible S.O.B., that it make...( read more)s the viewer want him caught by any means necessary, just like Callahan. Sure, it's a little beyond belief to think that Callahan wouldn't have known that his actions were going to endanger the investigation, but I'd like to think that most people would have done exactly the same things that he did. And when the end finally comes for Scorpio, it is oh so satisfying.

So yeah, this was an awesome movie. I wish I would have seen it a long time ago. It completely deserves its iconic status.

A good template for "unorthodox cop tracks down psycho killer" movies to come, but one that does not age well. I was really disappointed, it's kind of boring and Clint is flat, but I shouldn't be too hard on the Western-outside-the-Western genre, this film is important for that r...( read more)eason as well. Better versions of this film are now so common that, unfortunately, it's just not exciting. No less of a cinematic signpost, though.

Bad ass and way a head of it's time. Worth seeing for the stadium pull back helicopter shot alone.

A brilliant genre opposite to Zodiac

Clint making tweed look cool. That alone is worth the watch. But its his sheer viciousness that is awe inspiring. The film is nearly 40 years old, I was born 10 years after it was made yet it hooked me straight away. Great to see an American film not set in LA or New York.

I simply do not know where to begin. This movie is immortal, plain and simple. Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood are at their A game. The whole running time they had a twinkle in their eye and a smirk on their face. They knew with complete metaphysical certitude that Dirty ...( read more)Harry was a winner. If they didn't they should have. This is not a movie that emphasises plot because it really doesn't have to. Things happen like they way they should. It never feels "hollywooded up" if you will. Instead, Siegel relies on the abiities of his actors and cinematographers to craft a loose cannon cop on the edge story. Any criticisms of cliche material are unfounded. I hold that this movie invented that whole damn genre, or atleast revolutionized it. What's even more impressive is the tid bits of social commentary you can choose to listen to. Uh, that's so hard to do, too. Being subtle about a statement in a movie. It's either in your face or half assed. Not so here. Dirty Harry is, and forever will remain, a classic. It even includes one of my favorite lines in all of cinema. "Well, I'm all broken up about that man's rights."

Can see why it became such a massive classic that one scene where he does his famous do you feel lucky speech its worth watching just for that. Really enjoyed the story moved along really well and the action was pretty decent back for 1971. Eastwood just keeps kicking ass in ever...( read more)y movie i see.

I know what you ´re thinking.Did he fire six shots or only five? Directed by:Don Siegel
    Cast:Clint Eastwood,Reni Santoni,Andy Robinson,John Vernon
    Genre:Action,Crime
    Year of release:1971
    Running Time:99 minutes

    Plot:
San Francisco is being terrorized by a sniper who calls himself Scorpio, and Scorpio kills Diana Davidson as she swims in a pool. Inspector Harry Callahan is known as Dirty Harry. Dirty Harry is a widower, his wife having been killed in an auto accident. He lives to make the existence of his superiors a miserable one, and he refuses to play by the rules. Dirty Harry doesn't wear Kevlar and he doesn't carry an arsenal of automatic weapons. All he needs is his .44 magnum. Six shots doesn't seem like much, but it's enough when you rarely miss and a single shot can knock you into the next millennium. Dirty Harry handles the search for Scorpio, and ends up stopping three men from robbing a bank. Known for bringing bad luck to his partners, Dirty Harry reluctantly accepts new partner Chico Gonzalez on the orders of Lieutenant Al Bressler. Dirty Harry even gets chewed out by the mayor. Scorpio promises to kill a black person and a priest if the city doesn't give him $100,000. Nearly caught, Scorpio doubles the ransom, kidnaps a 14-year-old girl, and buries her alive, giving the police a limited time to cough up the money before she suffocates. Dirty Harry follows Scorpio's instructions for the delivery, which results in Chico getting wounded. Dirty Harry tracks Scorpio to Kezar Stadium, the home of the San Francisco 49ers. Scorpio is running across the football field, and Dirty Harry calmly takes aim and nails him in the leg at the 50-yard line. The shot lifts him up and flips him over. Dirty Harry tortures Scorpio into revealing the girl's hiding place. She's found dead and Scorpio is released due to Dirty Harry's unorthodox procedure. Later, Scorpio takes over a school bus. And Dirty Harry is the only one who can take Scorpio down.

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

If there aren't mentalities like Dirty Harry's at loose in the land, then the movie is irrelevant. If there are, we should not blame the bearer of the bad news. full review
