Well I like the chicks and their music and I just never seen the movie so I decided to watch. Not a bad one, cause it's a documentary, and that aint my cup of tea.
But good, eye opening you could say.

I had no idea how much of an effect Natalie's comments had on the band. Dixie Chicks are the only country and western band I will listen to.

Shut up and Sing is telling social document that explores the cost of free speech in the age of propaganda post 9/11. Everyone knows by now about the Dixie Chicks comment, and they know of the controversy that it brought them. Whether you care for the Dixie Chicks music or not ...( read more)(I personally do not) there is no denying that Shut Up and Sing is a powerful film, and its hard to walk away from it not feeling more respect for them.
Barbara Kopple's style allows for a very intimate viewing of the band behind the scenes with their managers, publicists and families. Its quite refreshing to see that these girls really are incredibly close, and never felt bitter towards Maines for her comment.
The reaction to her comments snowballed out of control when in the hands of overzealous conservatives, and of course their feud with Toby Keith, of which there are some amusing moments in the film.
Kopple uses the Dixie Chicks more as a tool to examine the consequences of free speech in the supposed land of the free. It is incredible to remember that people were burning cds, they were being banned, and threatened with death for their words.
The film lacks the punch found in Harlan County USA and American Dream, but its never short on emotion and its intimate look at the comment's controversy is a powerful examination of how even so called free societies react to dissenters.

Since when did taste in music and politics need to be exclusive?

I like documentaries that observe rather than comment, as this one does. The nonlinearity adds to understanding the emotional turmoil the band goes through and makes this a very compelling documentary. The moment when they prepare for the Dallas concert after having received a d...( read more)eath threat is extremely touching.

I am not a Dixie Chicks fan per say but I really enjoyed this film. I like the fact that they speak their minds and they accept all the backlash that they receive from it. Not to many groups especially a female group can do a documentary where they tell it like it is.

SHUT UP & SING is an impassioned, politically informed documentary about the Dixie Chicks' run-in with country music radio and fans. The film traces the backlash against the Chicks following singer Natalie Maines' now-infamous declaration at a London concert on March 10, 2003: "J...( read more)ust so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." A boycott of their music threatened their career. Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Robison took on the controversy as a means to defend "free speech." They spoke against majority opinion, which supported the invasion of Iraq. Cutting back and forth in time, Shut Up & Sing includes concert footage, reactions to a death threat made against Maines, recording sessions for their ablum 'Taking the Long Way' , and discussions with manager Simon Renshaw as he and the Chicks figure what to do, as the fallout begins to build.

I personally liked the documentary, I find it odd how those who profess the greatest love for this country find it so easy to hate those who exercise its most valued principles.

Also since the film was completed, the Dixie Chicks have won 5 Grammys for the album the controversy gave birth to, and that their careers and energy appear to have been reinvigorated.

Wasn't planning on watching this, as I'm not a country music fan. Although towards the finale they'd actually written more soft rock music. Glad I watched! It really opened my eyes even more about the hypocrisy in this nation. Kudos to them for standing up for what they said. I s...( read more)till can't believe that Natalie's life was actually threatened. America? Land of the free?
