Plot: The newly-regenerated Doctor takes on the Master on the turn of the millennium, 31 December 1999.
Even though, it wasn't the direct BBC take on the Doctor. It still held it's own. With an intriging storyline, and being the first appearance of the Doctor during his somewhat diminshed appearances untill the newer series, it was a good dose.
Brilliant t.v. movie. Shame that this was the only appearance we got to see of the 8th incarnation of the Doctor which was well-played by Paul McGann. Good movie overall.
Interesting take...had some issues...but nice version of classic show. But new series by RTDAVIES is better.
not as good as the tv series but even so an absolute must for the die hard doctor who fans including me!!
paul mcgann makes a really interesting doctor! the first thought i had when the movie started was that it look REALLY REALLY american. the chasing and everything. not that its bad.. its just weird. I love the doctor's character here.
I thought this film was very poor, it didn't have the backround or the enviorment of doctor who, it was like a home made channel 5 version. It was a cheap rip off spoiling doctor who, thank good a lot of people dont know about this film!
An Americanized version of Doctor Who. Gun fights, car chases. Didn't like this movie much but I own it anyway.
Not as good as the TV series but an ok attempt for an american market. Glad the BBC got the rights back from FOX.
This TV movie, the only on-screen Doctor Who in a 15-year stretch except for the mostly-dreadful charity clip Dimensions in Time, is about 80% of what it should have been. Paul McGann was brilliant as the Eighth Doctor, Sylvester McCoy was fun to watch one last time as the Seventh, and even Eric Roberts as the Master had his good points. The story was marred, however, by several troublesome moments, most notably the Doctor claiming to be half-human, and the Master agreeing this was so. Discontinuities can be disconcerting sometimes!l
try the fourth doctor from the late 70's...maybe early 80's...he's by far the most amusing, i think.
The Doctor visits San Francisco, an enjoyable, action adventure style movie with more special effects than the classic series, but the current series is better. However, the movie does set up some themes that are referenced in the new series since 2005, like a more complex relationship with the companion and the Master.
It's cheesy, it's badly written and fussily directed. But, it is a damn sight better than some of those final serials. Six, *shivers*
A wonderfully high-spirited sci-fi romp that, while suffering from some plot problems, has some very sharp dialogue and energetic performances. Despite the American pedigree, this really does capture the spirit and enthusiasm of the classic science fiction series.
The 1996 movie didn't really bring the Doctor back to us as being made in America it didn't have the British feel which makes Doctor Who what it is. McGann played an excellent Doctor though and it's a shame he couldn't play the part for a longer part of the Time Lord's lifetime.
Underrated; Paul McGann was a good Doctor, but I'm glad he only did it the one time. Eric Roberts is hilarious.
not really keeping with the doctor who tradition they had to make it in to a big hollywood thing, bad move i think
If you hate this movie, you won't automatically hate the actual TV series. The series is awesome- one of the best shows I've ever seen. The movie... not so much.
I was always an old-school Dr. Who fan. I grew up watching the show back in the early 80s on PBS when I was in grade school. Any remake movie with friggin' Eric "B-Movie" Roberts in it just makes me want to hurl.
Pretty solid for anything doctor who related that takes place in america. couldve done with a bit more britishness but what can you do? eric roberst was pretty awesome, channeling a lot of terminator into the master. one thing that was cool was the tardis. it looked awesome. and huge.
It's good, sort of. Paul does a good job. But in the future never ever let the Americans do the Doctor again!
It's ok, I guess. the Americans wern't quite sure how to handle this I think.
We get the expected performance from Eric Roberts..... ie: wooden.
The doctor has a snog huh? well good for him.
the usual Hollywood vein, 3 or 4 endings, pretended as just rounding up.
Is there no good writers in America? no it's justthe horrible formularic thing, but hey
This is Doctor Who & this is the first time in about 6 months that I've seen somthing American which dosn't begin with "& there was a big explosion" & end with "& there was a big explosion" so if we can get people to think that we want something more than "& there was a big explosion" then it's got to be good.
Brilliant update of the classic series. To bad not enough Americans tuned in, would've been a great start to a new series.
A must see for all Doctor Who fans out there. It dose a great job one ending the original series. And they bring the Master in really good.
This is the only Doctor Who movie on here. That is depressing. Sorry, but I guess I'm just a sucker for the television series because this movie doesn't do much for me. I find the plot to be a little sparse.
