About the only Kevin Smith film I can enjoy.
  • November 13, 2009
Point and tease all you want, but I don't like Jay and Silent Bob. There, I said it. Feels so good too. I don't like Mallrats. I don't like Clerks (Clerks 2 can slide), and I dont like their damn "Strikes Back". Oh yeah... Chasing Amy... didn't like it.

While this is not, in my opinion, the best Kevin Smith flick it still managed to piss off the catholic church. What more can you want from a movie? Kudos to you Kevin Smith. ....."no ticket"

  • September 23, 2009
I always hated the idea of seeing Matt Damon and Ben Affleck together.. But they are great in this one as well as Good Will Hunting. It's one amazing movie , all the right thoughts put in here and it has an interesting plot. And Alanis Morissette is wonderful :p

"I feel like Han Solo, he's Chewie, she's Ben Kenobi, and we're all in that f***ed-up bar!"
    - Jay

Faith is a funny thing. Two renegade angels find a loophole that would get them back into Heaven. They are destroying existence in the process. Bethany, a cynical mor...( read more)tal and abortion clinic worker, is called by the overworked Voice of God to save humanity by preventing the angels from reaching their unholy destination of New Jersey. Her quest to save the world is joined by two unlikely prophets Jay and Silent Bob, the quick-witted yet little-known 13th apostle, and a sexy, former muse with a case of writer's block.

Dogma features great acting performances from the following cast:
    1.) Ben Affleck (Bartleby)
    2.) Matt Damon (Loki)
3.) Alan Rickman (Voice of God)
    4.) Linda Fiorentino (Bethany)
    5.) Jason Mewes (Jay)
    6.) Kevin Smith (Silent Bob)
    7.) Chris Rock (Rufus)
    8.) Salma Hayek (Serendipity)

Dogma doesn't seem sacrilegious to me as I find the humorous use of banished angels funny - not to mention there's an abortionist as its unlikely savior of the world. Pretty comedic, huh? It's nice for me to see the great acting performances of people like the former New Jersey Clerks Mr. Mewes and Smith; Rickman and his recognizable voice really fits God's character well and I can approve of his acting here. (Amen to that.) With these elements Dogma is an excellent heavenly comedy...so prepare thyself when you watch the fun of it.

probably did for Kevin what the Arbys philly cheese does for Kevins arteries
  • September 18, 2009
This is a good film, Kevin Smith annoys me at the best of times but this is one of his best. Having Alanis Morissette play god was a great idea.
  • September 16, 2009
Just like Python's Life of Brian, this is a film religious nuts love to hate. Why? Not because it belittles religion (which it dosent) ut because its a religious comedy. Little do most know that the film actually encourages faith rather than mocks it. With a biting satire and wit...( read more)ty dialogue, this film gets through to me (and i assume most others) on a level we can understand, addressing the issues with faith yet reaffirming their benefits. A great film well worth seeing.

Outstanding! ONE of my FAVORITE movies ever..KEVIN SMITH well..RULES
  • September 7, 2009
a great movie with a funny story line and good actors
  • September 7, 2009
I just love the ambition Kevin Smith shows in this film. While it is overlong and much too lowly budgeted for his vision, the film is so uniquely him -- an amalgam of religious allegory, theological questioning, 80s-style bawdy comedy and comic books (who else could've made this?...( read more)!?) -- that it's impossible not to love it. The ideas are so intriguing, the humour so bang-on and the cast are so terrific, it manages to rise above any technical roughness.

WHAT a cast! Good god. This is pure genius.
Get 'touched' by an angel *If all angels are that pretty, touch away.*
Abortion clinic worker Bethany Sloane (Linda Fiorentino - Who I've only ever seen in Men In Black) with a special heritage is enlisted to prevent tw...( read more)o angels, Bartleby and Loki (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) from re-entering Heaven, after being booted out by God.
Along the way, she is aided by several others - Two hilariously funny prophets, Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith <3). The 13th Apostle Rufus (Chris Rock) and a stripper, Serendipity (Salma Hayek)
They must stop those who stand in their way. Although we have a demon named Azrael (Jason Lee) trying to keep the group from accomplishing their goal.
I must mention Alan Rickman who played Metatron, a quick witted, sarcastic, really lovable aid to God.
''Metatron acts as the voice of God. Any documented occasion when some yahoo claims God has spoken to them, they're speaking to me. Or they're talking to themselves.''
Although she had, well, in a way, a small part, Alanis Morissette was brilliant. Of course, she was God. She didn't need to do much to wow you.
This movie is a MUST see, for anyone - Well..unless you're really easily offended.

George Carlin as a cardinal...need I say more? I mean you try thinking of a cool, hip way to promote Jesus. Yeah, George is up for making those religious marketing decisions. LOL...
  • September 6, 2009
One of Kevin Smiths best movies. Some real funny jokes and incite on religion. It has a great balance of thoughtful and silly humour. Alan Rickman was so awesome as the monotonally morbid voice of god. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were so badass in this, they should team up in anot...( read more)her Smith film again.

  • August 14, 2009
    Contemptuous humor at it's finest.
  • August 14, 2009
Smith's epic film on his interpretation of Catholicism with plenty of jokes to make the Vatican blush.
  • July 30, 2009
This is totally out of the ballpark of what I would normally watch, but I did find it somewhat funny. I don't know that it'd be something I'd watch on a regular basis, but it was nice to see something out of my usual genres.

    Bethany: You were martyred?
Rufus: That's one way of putting it. Another way of putting it would be to say that I was bludgeoned to death by huge fucking rocks.

Along with Clerks, this is my other favorite Kevin Smith film and one of my favorite overall movies. It's hilarious...( read more).

Loki: Easy for you to say. You get off light in razing. You got to stand there and read at Sodom and Gomorrah, I had to do all the work.
Bartleby: What work did you do? You lit a few fires.
Loki: I rained down sulphur, man, there's a subtle difference.
    Bartleby: Oh, yeah, I'm sure.
Loki: Hey, you know, fuck you, man. Any moron with a pack of matches can set a fire. Raining down sulphur is like an endurance trial man. Mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in, outside of soccer.

A great ensemble cast makes up what is basically a comedy/fantasy epic set in a Kevin Smith world. It's not about preaching what religions you should follow or disbelieve, it's just a really funny movie with an original concept set mainly around Catholicism.

    Bethany: What's he like?
Metatron: God? Lonely. But funny. He's got a great sense of humor. Take sex for example. There's nothing funnier than the ridiculous faces you people make mid-coitus.
Bethany: Sex is a joke in heaven?
Metatron: The way I understand it, it's mostly a joke down here, too.

The story surrounds a women, working in an abortion clinic, who has lost her faith, Bethany, played by Linda Fiorentino. One night she is instructed by the voice of God, the Metatron, played by Alan Rickman, that she must stop two fallen angels from reentering heaven, or else the world will end.

These angels are Bartleby and Loki, played by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who have found a loophole after getting kicked out of heaven, and spending an eternity on Earth. They have an evil demon, played by Jason Lee, to thank, who has given these two the opportunity they need.

Bethany must now travel to New Jersey, with the aid of two profits, Jay and Silent Bob, who else, as well as the 13th apostle, Chris Rock, and a muse, Salma Hayek, in order to stop the angels, before the angel's plan defies God's logic and unmakes existence.

Jay: I feel like I'm Han Solo, and you're Chewie, and she's Ben Kenobi, and we're in that fucked-up bar.

Each member of the cast works, starting with Affleck and Damon, before they parted ways on the movie scene, they made a great team together and play great off each other, with Affleck in particular giving one of his best performances.

Fiorentino, Hayek, Rock and Rickman coming into this Kevin Smith world are also welcome and handle Smith style dialog very well. And Jason Lee also brings in what is needed as a villain, despite his small amount of time (that's what DVD is for).

Bartleby: Why do they want to kill us?
Azrael: Because your pissing people off! That's why.

And once again Jay and Silent Bob provide the perfect amount of side laughs but even serve their own purpose this time around in terms of the plot.

I put this as my favorite Smith film because it has that same sense of humor and the plot is just so neat and different from most comedies. Where else could one fine vulgar humor mixed with religious discussions centered around semantic arguments and pop culture references.

Bartleby: You know, here's what I don't get about you. You know for a fact that there is a God. You have been in his presence. He's spoken to you personally, and yet I just heard you claim to be an atheist.
Loki: I just like to fuck with the clergy, man. I just love it. I just love to keep those guys on their toes.

An all around funny film with a good premise that is easy to continually watch.

Jay: I get it! Holy Bartender! That's a great one!

Love this movie even if it does border on sacreligious. It's funny, makes some good points and put some of my beliefs into words that I hadn't managed to.
  • July 2, 2009
An ensemble that works wonders with sharp dialogue, social commentary and a handful of comic situations to keep you well entertained as the religious satire rolls off the tongue. The thing that I love about this film is how it doesn't pretend to fit into any category-it was simpl...( read more)y made to make you think.
