Stripped down to its raw essentials, Dogville is Dogma at its finest. Surprisingly it still feels like cinema as apposed to theatre. Its probably the most original film of the last decade, and again, totally overlooked and misunderstood. People complain there is something lacking...( read more) in this film, they're right, it lacks all the unnecessary guff that people have come to expect from lazy cinema and it is better for it. Excellent film, excellent cast, a truly brilliant film.

While I loved the idea of playing out an entire movie in a stage - play setting (still laughing at the 'gooseberry bushes'), I still feel like this is lacking something. Possibly the story itself is a bit unsatisfactory. Even though the residents of Dogville deserved what they go...( read more)t in the end (no spoilers), it still doesn't feel like it should.

Great performances all round, though. Patricia Clarkson plays the evil bitch with such conviction it's hard not to despise her.

    What a freakin' weird-ass movie.

One of my favorite movies. I interpret it to be sort of a story about Mercy and Justice. Humans need understanding and compassion, but they will never learn and become corrupt unless there is justice also. This is told through a sort of allegory like Jesus and God, and how Jes...( read more)us has compassion but her father insists on justice. I read that it's supposed to have something to do with anti-americanism, which I can also see.

Dogville is one of those films where you can respect what a filmmaker is trying to do but doesn't really change the fact that it is an extremely flawed film. I highly respect Lars von Trier attempts to make something revolutionary (It's good to know after watching the awful beyo...( read more)nd words Fool's Gold there is ambition in film.) However Dogville is almost as painful to watch as Fool's Gold only being redeemed by the cast. So I will not call this a pretentious film just a film that loses it's focus on story telling for it's visual elements.

This was the worse movie I have ever watched. The only part I did like was the chalk lines....

Lars Von Trier takes the elements of humanity, and unclothes it, then examines it quite closely like a doctor giving someone an exam.

I was apprehensive about seeing this one. Its been in my collection for a long time and the fact that it's stripped down to its rawest form put me off - though this would later become a major positive. The movie takes place on a stage, as if it were a play. Very few props, lots o...( read more)f imagination. The story involves Grace, a girl who stumbles upon the town of Dogville trying to outrun gangsters who have been chasing her. She befriends the locals and becomes an integral part of the town - that is until the power hungry town abuses its role as protector of Grace. The story becomes intertwined with betrayal, greed and revenge. Wonderfully narrated, fantastic visionary work from von Trier and a terrific performance from all actors, especially Nicole Kidman, whom I'm not normally a fan of.

Exceptional use of scenery, or lack of scenery... Makes a point that not all is important when making a brilliant film.
