Donnie Darko is a paranoid schizophrenic anti-social teenager having therapy and using medication. He has visions of a giant rabbit, Frank, the Fuzzy Bunny, who instructs him to make violent acts, like destroying the fire hydrant and piping of his high-school (like in Graham Greene's book, which text was read in his English class), or burning the house of the hypocrite Jim Cunningham. Further, he predicts the doomsday and is very interested in time travel through the wormhole.
I SOOOO LOVED IT <3 . is my fav psychological thriller .
Frank,(The Fuzzy Bunny): Why are you wearing that stupid man suit? "
"Donnie:
[in a letter]
Dear Roberta Sparrow, I have reached the end of your book and... there are so many things that I need to ask you. Sometimes I'm afraid of what you might tell me. Sometimes I'm afraid that you'll tell me that this is not a work of fiction. I can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to."
Finally I have seen it and now I know why is everybody making big deal out of it.One of the deepest movies I've ever seen and one of the best and most thought-provoking movies that I have seen.
My jaw is actually dropped.Donnie Darko is one of those films that you can't easily forget.Richard Kelley does an astonishing job for his first film, I look forward to seeing more of his movies in the future. 'Donnie Darko' is a film filled to the brim with such intriguing ideas, original plot turns, extraordinary visuals and riveting acting. Jake Gyllenhaal is outstanding in the lead, and the ensemble cast consisting of a humorous Patrick Swayze, a surprisingly solid Drew Barrymore and an always remarkable Jena Malone is first-rate.Michael Andrews music is superb and adds a depth worthy of this classic. This movie talks about how this life line is like a box that you cant go out, because what kelly trying to show that the you cant go nowhere in school you cant develop and you cant be creative, school made you like a robot. donnie see in frank the knowledge of what he needs to do, and that's the reason that he see him as something scary, because he knows what he needs to do and that is frighting him.. like frank says in the theater- why do you wearing that stupid man suit? frank explain donnie that he choose to see him as a monster.
Frank represents the wisdom that beyond. You can see frank also as a tear in donnie's heart donnie was so long in that box where he cant express his emotions until he "blow's out" you can say, and the only way to survive is break what around you break the rules. also frank say's to donnie- "wake up", wake up.. wake up from the box the society created for you, wake up- don't afraid to create, don't afraid to destroy. This movie show's to us how people go around them self all the time and they don't even notice, this movie give us any reason to believe in obsessions and fate, that movie show us that our fate is already set and we cant escape from it.Frank already knows that he cant save donnie, he want at least that before he dies he shows what really stand's beyond all this. But what kelly show's us in the end that even if a man look that empty he can also cry and he also afraid and like donnie all the people are troubled in their own way, you cant really know somebody until u see him alone in his room. The first time I watched this movie I was really caught of guard and had one of those "Wooow" moments, and actually thought it was a great movie with depth and a very intelligent higher meaning, even though I had some trouble understanding every bit of it (which only kept me thinking about it). I was almost flying and rated this one a 9 for being a fantastic movie, but the second time I watched it I actually understood it, and I must admit, without elevating myself, that its not that hard to get after-all, its actually quite simple. It makes the audience search for the answers by watching it a second and perhaps a third time. Also it's one of the few films that I don't think can ever be remade, or at least to the same standard. With the clever use of CGI, using just enough to tell the story that it isn't overloaded with the special effects.
The following will reveal the story
Donnie Darko gets along badly with his family, with his teachers and with his classmates; but he does manage to find a sympathetic friend in Gretchen, who agrees to date him; and he has a compassionate psychiatrist, who discovers hypnosis is the means to unlock hidden secrets. His other companion may not be a true ally. Donnie has a friend named Frank, who is either a large purple bunny, or man in a large purple bunny costume. Either way, Donnie is the only one who can see him. When an engine falls off a plane and destroys his room, Donnie is not there. Both the event, and Donnie's escape, seem to have been caused by supernatural events. Donnie's mental illness, if such it is, may never allow him to find out for sure.
"Donnie Darko" is one of those films that requires a great deal of concentration to understand, but isn't indecipherable (like twist movies). Instead of just an original premise or series of events, this script contains both of those, plus some really clever dialogue.Richard Kelly has written perhaps the most original script of the past decade.
A storm is coming, Frank says / A storm that will swallow the children / And I will deliver them from the kingdom of pain / I will deliver the children back the their doorsteps / And send the monsters back to the underground / I'll send them back to a place where no-one else can see them / Except for me / Because I am Donnie Darko. "
Um filme interessante. Prato cheio pra quem gosta de uma confusão e de criar interpretações próprias ou ver por ai teorias variadas onde nenhuma aparentemente é certa. Boa trilha sonora, Roteiro bacana.
Love this movie, own this movie, can't go wrong with a movie that keeps you guessing first time around, and adds something new each time you watch it, like I totally missed the "smurf" talk first time around....
It's one of greatest conceptual films I've ever watched. In a way, it has just about every single genre included...and to say it's deep is an understatement. My number 2 fav.
The movie is great, i think it´s a masterpiece. Donnie is a weird guy who actually happens to be really smart and that´s what i like. That never judge anyone for what they look like or act like. Jake Gyllenhaal is an incredible actor and no one could ever play Donnie Darko this well as Jake did. It´s one of my favorite movies and i never get tired of it. It´s a bit complicated but if you think a bit then you´ll understand and never leave a clue open, and you understand everything at the end, and the movie has a good story it´s why i like it. And Frank is kinda scary. But he´s cool to.
I really want to watch this one again. I loved not fully understanding the events and images until they were given in their dark way. The ending was a surprise to me.
It's absolutely fabulous! It made me think about what am I able to sacrifice for other people, and if I am a pleasure person, or if I just make people suffer.
Donnie Darko has got to be one of my favourite films. You either love it or you hate it, or as some girl said "its stupid and dumb".
When I first watched this I wasn't sure what to think really; then I watched it again. Contrary to my initial fear [and quite refreshing I might add] this doesn't fall back on the typical narrational or character-based hooks that litter the "teen movie" genre.
Jake Gyllenhaal, in my opinion, really helps you to connect and gain an insight into the mind of Donnie. Not only that, Donnie Darko is a vivid representation of the state of America today, even though this was released in 1988.
Overall, Donnie Darko is one of the best cult classics you'll ever experience. I praise Richard Kelly's achievement.
Great Perormance from Jake Gyllenhaal
Donnie Darko is a paranoid schizophrenic anti-social teenager having therapy and using medication. This movie suprised me and its one of my all time fav films. A great perormance from Jake Gyllenhaal
Schizophrenic!!! The ending was great, and I like the idea, but I didn't like the style and I think they could have potrayed it better, because up untill the ending I thought it really sucked, they could have had a better script to entertain throughtout the entire film. Though his thoughts didn't have to make much sense, why did it have to be so stupid! (That's what kept it from getting a 5!).
Donnie Darko is one of my personal all time favourite movies. Not really a suprise that it won 11 awards.
Jake Gyllenhaal's acting is really something brilliant and this is the movie that introduced me to James Duval.
Richard Kelly really shows us just how one film can change your views on life. I believe the mix of drama, mystery, sci-fi and thriller genre material creates an experience that can rarely be matched by other films.
Not only this but the soundtrack is fantastic with songs by Tears For Fears, Duran Duran, Joy Division and even " Stay" written by the amazing Danny Elfman.
If you haven't seen Donnie Darko already I suggest you rent/buy this now!
an incredibly intriguing look into time and the human mind. masterfully directed and led by one of Hollywood's best, Darko remains one of the est movies I've seen.
something about this movie just really irritated me. the plot really makes no sense, even after a SOMEWHAT decent effort to bring it full-circle at the end. certain motifs, such as the sister's support for Dukakis and the gym teacher's super religious conservativism, seemed nothing more than unneccessary political jabs that contribute nothing to the overall story. also the characters as well as the overall dark, brooding tone seemed far too stereotypical and cookie-cutter from the mind of a high school emo. a bold and interesting film, but what could have been a terrific psychothriller/sci-fi drama just ended up being a really weird cult movie that probably very few people over 30 appreciate.
i freaking love this film. i luv @ the end where he is completely comforted by his own death. a grin from ear to ear! plus who doesn't love patrick swayze being a petter ass.
