The gratuitous violence quotient in this movie was just off the scales....loved the concept but the delivery was hideous.

decent action flick not to memorable though
  • June 4, 2009
It's really strange so you have to be up for canabalizm and all that sorta thing. It's also a British film, incase you didn't know.
  • June 4, 2009
Neil Marshall has done it again. Combining the elements from the famous late 70s/early 80's sci-fi, he creates a film that both pays homage to those films (specifically Escape From New York, The Warriors, and The Road Warrior) while also creating a violent action film that stand...( read more)s out from the special effects driven extravaganzas Hollywood keeps spewing out. Sci-fi fans have seen this story before. A virus that turns people into crazy zombies, in Europe...aka 28 Days Later.
A future with nasty bikers punks chasing down cars on deserted highways ...aka The Road Warrior. Fights to the death in an arena with crowds sporting mohawks and ...( read more)dirty teeth cheer for blood....aka Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. A land sealed off by a huge wall to keep the infected criminals inside...aka Escape From New York. The Hero is a combination of Snake Plissken meets Victoria Beckham/Posh Spice. I think its was the director's intent to pay tribute to these movies but it just comes off like a tired ripoff.
Lots of blood and guts but lacks to thrill. Hoskins and McDowell's talents are wasted...as well as the viewer's time.
  • April 16, 2009
Excellent futuristic action romp with definite nods to Mad Max and Escape From New York bought to you by the makers of Dog Soldiers and The Descent.

Hmmm, this was very reminscent of such films as Mad Max, and quite blatant with its comments on social and political agenda. It took a noticeable dual approach in that the regression into violent cannibalism and medieval punishment, countered each other and at the same time share...( read more)d numerous similarities. I can appreciate the aims of the film, but I found the performances occasionally strained, and somewhat cliche, and in general despite my greatest efforts, the film did not sit too well with me. In spite of this it was fairly good.

Where to begin with this haha
first of, you have a 28 Days/Weeks later clone with almost the same flippin story line. Killer virus, England is screwed, Scotland used as quaratine zone, survivors discovered, go in and get the cure. Very predictable and with alittle Escape from New...( read more) York throw into the bargain. Now so far its an eerie and quite decent horror/sci-fi flick, but things start to go wrong, first of, Scotland has all been left for dead and everyone has suppose to have been dead for along time (30yrs) from the killer virus, but then all of a sudden, people are found roaming around via sat shots....hmmmmm

OK, send in the elite team lead by a sexy female (Kate Beckinsale wannabe) ala Aliens to get the cure from these people. Hence the now Aliens rip, a team go in being watched by a team on cam and end up in a admittedly very good shoot out with a never ending supply of nasty Scottish weirdos. The team is killed of one by one till the last few are captured, very exciting but very Aliens haha one question that does stand out though is how on earth all theses hundreds of people managed to live n survive in a community like the film shows without being detected for so long?????? and how come so many are immune to the virus??? it was suppose to be a KILLER.

Anywho, from then we get a very odd Matrix style city of Zion setup with all the locals raving away to the Fine Young Cannibals (80's gold hehe) and eating the captured soldiers, all in a very Mad Max/Rocky Horror costume setup within a concert or arena. The leader of the Scottish cannibals is a direct Mad Max rip of right down to his hair style. He also seems to have a 28 Days Later or Resident Evil style tat on his back which is rather similar to the toxic logo they both use......AND he has his very own gimp in rubber, much like Mad Max 2's Vernon Wells character.

NOW...from there lots happen (wont spoil) but we now end up in another part of Scotland where the locals are living back in Medival times with horses, knights and Malcolm Macdowell leading them. We now end up with Gladiator style fights and gun battles, oh and a Bentley turns up to.
    lol still with me?
From there, in the escape form of the Bentley we end the film with a HUGE TOTAL MASSIVE rip of Mad Max 2, quite a gloriously bloody and spot on rip I must say. Its actually a very cool sequence with great cars and fighting but I just cant understand how they got away with it haha its such a copy its untrue. Also, you may wonder how all these crappy cars can keep up with a modern day super Bentley haha it should wipe the floor with the cannibal carriers. After all this the film tends to end on a rather unexplained note, the heroine stays in disease infested Scotland and returns to the cannibal camp to proclaim their leader dead..why?? no sense atall.

Overall this film is really really good, very tense, exciting, bloody, gorey and has absolutely every element a film could need, they have packed in almost all sci-fi action genres into one film haha bizaare!!
but it does work and its a good British film if you overlook the outrageous copying of many many classic movies.
    Worth a look for sure.
  • April 6, 2009
Yeah it's a mix of all the big 80s actioners, but this is Neil marshall's Grindhouse; his love letter to the films that inspired him. Tons of fun.
  • April 6, 2009
From apocalyptic Scotland to medieval Scotland. It's wasn't fun, it was just a huge rip-off from other prominent well-established films; Mad Max, 28 Weeks Later, Waterworld, Gladiator, Children of Men, A Boy and his Dog.

Yet it still didn't make any sense...

...( read more)/a> - Share Movies Doomsday is an action/scifi/horror/thriller about a country that goes into quarantine when a infection spreads arounds that eats away towards every living organism who tampers with it. Meanwhile, an elite team led by a surviving soldier named Eaden (Rhona Mitra) who goes on assignment to recover a cure that will save humanity. Later on, Eaden & her crew realize that its not going to be so easy contaning the cure when a vicious psychotic leader named Sole is hunting them down along with the rest of his infectious gang. Now, Eaden & her squad must fight against Sole & his gang to stay alive & find the cure before Doomsday comes. I saw Doomsday not knowing what to expect from it. Man was I blown away by how how good this movie turned out. This movie had a whole lot of action, violence & gore in it. It was one the most entertaining movies that I've seen, its that good. Warning, if you cant handle the violence thats in this movie, then you wont enjoy this movie because thats all it really has in it. Also as I was watching it, I noticed it was like Mad Max style which was a cool thing because those movies are awesome and this movie seemed like a remake of it. So that made it even more awesome to watch. Mad Max with a girl as the hero played by Rhona Mitra. She was so fun to watch in this one. Rhona shows what it takes to be a big actress & action star. In the end, this movie was awesome filled with spectacular violent action scenes from the start. For all you that endure action/horror you'll love this flick. Doomsday is a movie to die for thats full of hardcore action thats filled with mindblowing entertainment. 3 1/2 stars

Virus attacking some parts of the british islands? infected people become zombies and attack people? I'm kind of hooked from the start.
Heroine Posh Spice has left the other spice girls and has enbarked a quest in Scotland.
all of sudden we are watching "escape from MadMax" and ...( read more)after a run through the narnia tunnel we do expericene low budget lord of the rings/the quest of the holy grail.
There are tremendous gaps of logic and decent scriptworking in this one, but you have some good fun - there is not enough mad Malcolm McDowell though, I could do with at least one more hour with Malcolm.
  • April 4, 2009
I got that MadMaxish feeling in my tummy watching this movie but thats not a bad thing .
i kinda liked it & Rohna Milta was very good , i like her quite a lot .

Fair...if you have a strong stomach. An elite fighting team must find a cure for a doomsday virus within a post-apocalyptic land with two warring factions. I was expecting the typical bad post-apocalyptic blood fest, filled with vulgar language, packed with non stop action, gra...( read more)vity defying fight scenes, the typical story line, and some awful acting. Surprising, the movie delivered more than I expected, almost to excess, and the acting wasn't half bad to boot. Rhona Mitra as Major Eden Sinclair, did a fair job as the lead action heroine. Malcolm McDowell and Craig Conway portray the leaders of the two warring factions, who both have equally demented views of reality. Craig Conway steals the show and much of the supporting cast held up fairly well. Yet, it would have been better with less cast and more focus on these three main characters. Much of the blood and gore was unnecessary and did not contribute to the story at all. There are some pot-holes in the story, which could have been better explained. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and was entertained, bu tit is not in the same league as such films as Mad Max or I am Legend.

Cannibals, fast cars, big Guns, hot chicks & constant gore &explosions all put in a wasteland... all very enjoyable but not original. I found it quite entertaining so it did what it was meant to.
  • March 30, 2009
I had high hopes for Neil Marshall after Dog Soliders and Descent, but this I'm aftraid is a rather second rate affair.

It's ostensibly a mishmash of ideas from Escape from New York, Mad Max 2, and 28 Days Later, that at the same time cynicall...( read more)y suggests that the Scots will descend into the kind of barbarism only imagined in Lord of the Flies. The plot is too slight (and too filled with obvious reference to other films), and the script far too weak to sustain the run-time.

I really hope his next film is better.

Wow I didn't realize this movie had the guy from clockwork orange this is great he areally makes an insaine person look normal!! this movie has it's mindless rage and crazy action and violence is just great in that way but the story makes no sense to at all but it has a lot of ev...( read more)rything and foe all taste!!

In an apocalyptic vision of the future, authorities brutally quarantine Scotland as it succumbs to fear and chaos when a virus strikes. The literal walling-off works for three decades - until the dreaded Reaper virus violently resurfaces in London. An elite group of specialists, captained by Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare. Now, 27 years after the epidemic, groups of survivors are marauding through the streets of Glasgow and the virus has surfaced outside the wall. The British P.M., John Hatcher (Alexander Siddig), and his ruthless chief advisor, Michael Canaris (David O'Hara), have decided to send a covert team into Scotland to search for a cure. On the recommendation of Chief of Police Bill Nelson (Bob Hoskins), Eden is a no-nonsense cop who was evacuated from Scotland as a child. She is told to seek out a scientist named Kane (Malcolm McDowell), who is the most likely survivor to possess the cure. Once within the containment zone, however, she finds that such a task will not be easily accomplished. There are two barbaric factions at war - one led by Kane and the other by his son, Sol (Craig Conway) - and both want Sinclair and her compatriots dead.

Great Britain, 2007. A deadly plague, known as the "Reaper Virus," has broken out, killing hundreds of thousands in its wake. Thirty years later, with the wall still up and the victims all but forgotten, the virus breaks out again. The Government decides to send a crack team of operatives, led by Major Eden Sinclair, into the hot zone to investigate the possibility of a cure.

An elite group of specialists work to prevent a disaster from threatening the future of the human race. In this post apocalyptic thriller the hot female lead character is quested or is actually assigned a mission for the British government, complete with a headquarters full of scifi gadgets into the underbelly of a quarantined society, isolated to Scotland by walls and guns, that has reverted back to a more primal period in time to retrieve a possible virus antidote.

A lethal virus spreads throughout the British isles, infecting millions and killing hundreds of thousands. To contain the threat, acting authorities brutally quarantine the country as it succumbs to fear and chaos. The quarantine is successful. When you can't cast Kate Beckinsale, go for her look alike, which seems to be the precise way Neil Marshall was thinking when he cast Rhona Mitra and made her look, walk, and talk like Selene from Underworld.
Also like Underworld, Doomsday is a much better film then it has any ri...( read more)ght to be. It's completely entertaining, and while it may not have any original ideas, it executes its ideas very well. If you're a fan of Mad Max, Gladiator, Aliens, Escape From New York, or even if you just want to see some senseless violence, this is the action flick for you.
Neil Marshall, who really breathed some fresh air into the horror genre with The Descent, shows that he has real talent in staging action, in showing off the nicely crafted set designs, and in telling a story that as hollow as it is, it still manages to keep you rooting for the characters.
Doomsday is not a film for everyone. At best, it'll achieve cult status. But like post-apocalyptic films like Blade Runner, The Road Warrior, or even films like The Descent, I can see Doomsday with a legion of devoted fans for years to come.

  • March 8, 2009
Doomsday. After watching this, I would say that the title is appropriate. Neil Marshall is able to deliver a film that is not for the faint of heart.

The story is probably the weakest part of this film. By 30 minutes in, the plot is completely gone and forgettable. T

...( read more)he same can be said for the character development. The plot that does exist for the first 30 minutes or so is nothing original. There is a virus outbreak (Resident Evil). Rhona Mitra leads a team (Predator) into the unknown to find a vaccine (Resident Evil: Apocalypse). The story plays out this way until somebody gets the pointy end of a pick in the face. Then all hell breaks loose. For the next hour and 15 minutes it is non-stop senseless violence and action. You start out with crazy-a** cannibals in a ruined city and then, before you know it, the film turns into "medieval times" with archers on horseback and fighting in a castle. Soon enough you are on a long highway in an EXPLOSIVE car chase involving a nice Mercedes.

This movie sounds violent right? Well it is. Bloody and gory describes it nicely. If you don't like to see limbs cut off and blood all over the place stay away from this film. As far as the action goes, there is a ton of it. Guns, arrows, swords, and vehicles. Going back to the car chase that I mentioned earlier. It's been a while since I've seen a car chase that entertaining. What is even more ridiculous is that the Mercedes looks a little too clean after it. If a Mercedes is that tough then I can see why it is so expensive. The only real downside of the action is the editing.

The acting isn't too bad. The cast comes directly from Dog Soldiers. Not really, but there are at least 5 actors from that film in here. Not to mention that is another one of Neil Marshall's films. The lead, Rhona Mitra, is reminiscent of Kate Beckinsale in Underworld. Definitely a turn on.

Give this film a watch if all you care about is action and violence.

  • March 7, 2009
Average apocalypse action flick. Basically a cross between Escape from NY, 28 Days Later and Mad Max, but not as good. I think they actually used the music from both those movies.
