Seldom have I seen a movie that tried so hard and came so close. Ewan McGregor and Renee Zelleweger portray very likeable and entertaining characters who you actually *want* to end up with each other. However, those performances can't make up for the abysmal script and nonsensical plot. Perhaps it was meant as a tribute to old screwball comedies, but while those were able to take these stories and somehow make them seem like the most natural thing in the world, Down With Love makes it clear that the screenwriters were struggling to tie it all together. If only these same two characters, played by the same two actors (throwing in David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Paulson in their respective parts) could have been placed in a different movie...
this is a great movie, not like I thought (I thought it was going to be worse...)but seriously it's great and it's more thought than what I was expecting.
Absolutley hilarious! I never fail to roar with laughter when watching this movie. Ewan McGregor is wonderful as Catcher Block. I love it more and more each time I watch it!
Plot: A post-modern sex comedy set in the early 1960s centering upon a love affair between a best-selling advice author and a hotshot journalist/playboy.
This romantic comedy was kinda quirky and different for me. I totally didnt expect this from the movie. But with Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger acting in it, they really did pull it off. They made this movie really interesting and funny at times. It was really up-beat, but i think that it due to the movie being set in the 60's.
This is not a parody of 60s screwball comedies, it IS one. Set in the 60s, with a fitting soundtrack, looks, clothes and sets it has all the ingredients the old Rock Hudson - Doris Day movies had, including split screen telephone conversations, music collages and plenty of innuendos, misunderstandings and witty dialogues. McGregor and Zellweger are convincing in their roles, so is Pierce, although he simply seems to revive his role as Niles Frasier. So the movie is rather amusing and entertaining for the longest time, only the ending seems somewhat anticlimatic and is a tad disappointing. Still, not bad for a rainy day in front of the TV.
It have gotten a star if it wasn't for Renée Zellwger which I hate because she can't act, she's ugly and have an annoying voice. Ewan McGregor was great, I loved him.
A very lovely, old-style romantic comedy that in it's own sort of way, immitates what would have probably been a Doris Day / Rock Hudson film if it was actually filmed in the 1960's.
