The Abominable Dr. is back and this time he is off to Egypt.
Like in the first film there is a fine supporting cast and the murders are wonderfully bizarre.

Oh, Dr. Phibes, what won't you do for your dear Victoria? I accidentally got shipped the double feature instead of just "The Abominable Dr. Phibes", so it was a pleasant surprise to discover there was a sequel. The sequel is just as entertaining as the original, and Vincent Price camps it up even more than he did in "Abominable", if that's possible. Both are fun movies that don't take themselves too seriously with some gruesome, creative deaths thrown in as well. I've not seen too many of Price's horror pics, but these two now have my interest piqued. I'll definitely be seeking out some more flicks like this.

A lot of fun to watch, but definitely lacking the first chapter's intensity. In part one, Phibes' plan and motives are very clearly defined - in this one the plot is much more convoluted and unbelievable. However, as a sequel it's still very entertaining and Price does a fantastic job again.

Not quite as amazing as the original Dr. Phibes, but astounding nonetheless Bridges the b-movie and grindhouse genres.

The law of diminishing returns strikes again. Despite the incredibly final ending of the previous film, this film starts up by saying that what we saw before was actually a lie. Victoria Phibes is not entirely dead and Dr. Anton Phibes merely went into suspended animation at the end of the previous film. It seems that in Egypt there is a river that can grant immortality and Phibes intends to go there with his wife. Unfortunately, he has to beat the mysterious Biederbeck there in order to fully experience the benefits. The main appeal of the first film was how focused Phibes was on his revenge and the elasborate means he went about extracting it. Here, however, Phibes seemingly invents elaborate death traps out of thin air. He also kills indiscriminately like some slasher movie villain. If you enjoyed the first film you might like this one but it's a major step down. Although the MGM DVD appasrently restores the original ending music, which is Vincent Price singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." If nothing else, it might be worth a look for that.
