Dr Phibes is back in that familiar "Dark Comedy" storyline, and this time hes back for good. Phibes goes through great lengths and an hour of ridiculous plot to achieve eternal life, a life in which he will be reunited with the love of his life. Not nearly as good as the first but way more over the top and way more "comedy" then "dark".
The Abominable Dr. is back and this time he is off to Egypt.
Like in the first film there is a fine supporting cast and the murders are wonderfully bizarre.
Oh, Dr. Phibes, what won't you do for your dear Victoria? I accidentally got shipped the double feature instead of just "The Abominable Dr. Phibes", so it was a pleasant surprise to discover there was a sequel. The sequel is just as entertaining as the original, and Vincent Price camps it up even more than he did in "Abominable", if that's possible. Both are fun movies that don't take themselves too seriously with some gruesome, creative deaths thrown in as well. I've not seen too many of Price's horror pics, but these two now have my interest piqued. I'll definitely be seeking out some more flicks like this.
A lot of fun to watch, but definitely lacking the first chapter's intensity. In part one, Phibes' plan and motives are very clearly defined - in this one the plot is much more convoluted and unbelievable. However, as a sequel it's still very entertaining and Price does a fantastic job again.
The law of diminishing returns strikes again. Despite the incredibly final ending of the previous film, this film starts up by saying that what we saw before was actually a lie. Victoria Phibes is not entirely dead and Dr. Anton Phibes merely went into suspended animation at the end of the previous film. It seems that in Egypt there is a river that can grant immortality and Phibes intends to go there with his wife. Unfortunately, he has to beat the mysterious Biederbeck there in order to fully experience the benefits. The main appeal of the first film was how focused Phibes was on his revenge and the elasborate means he went about extracting it. Here, however, Phibes seemingly invents elaborate death traps out of thin air. He also kills indiscriminately like some slasher movie villain. If you enjoyed the first film you might like this one but it's a major step down. Although the MGM DVD appasrently restores the original ending music, which is Vincent Price singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." If nothing else, it might be worth a look for that.
A wicked and delightful sequel to the cult classic, "The Abominable Doctor Phibes." Although not quite as entertaining as the original, the film is an amusing satire on the horror genre in which the Good Doctor rises from the grave and eliminates everyone who stands in the way of his quest to bring life back to his beloved bride, using a number of gruesome methods to remove his opponents. Two rotting thumbs up!
Price reprises his role as Phibes in the quest for the river of life to bring back his wife only now to be pursued by his arch rival. Phibes must use his knowledge of curses to keep his foes... disposed of.
Regretably weak sequel has neither the humor or awesome kills of its predecessor. Modestly entertaining in its own right, and Vincent Price is always worth watching, but overall it coulda been a lot better.
I love this movie. I would love to see this and the first one remade. I know that there is no way that they'll compare, but with today's tech they'd look awsome.
The best part of the film is the breathtaking set design Outstanding combination of art deco / comedy / and horror flick. The musical score is fantastic one of the finest horror comedies
Phibes sure is abdominal in his 2nd outing but his revenge is no where near as cold or delicious this time around. Once again full of style, camp and humor w/ Price chewing this great character up w/ the mouth in the side of his neck (try not to choke on the bones). Sorta a cash in to have Phibes rise again but it's all good malicious fun; it's just a full step down from the first one
