Born in America but raised in Hong Kong by his father (a cautious and superstitious man) Bruce Lee learns the art of Kung Fu from the age of 5 and quickly becomes a skilled and unique fighter. After becoming involved in one too many street fights by the time he turns 18, Bruce's father, sends him to America to start a new life, earn a proper living and to be free of a menacing family curse that he feels his son will suffer from if he remains in China. Upon arrival, Bruce is faced with unbelievable racism, poverty and uncertainty, but all this changes when he meets his future wife Linda at his college. With his incredible fighting talents and her love and support, Bruce uses his abilities to earn a living, build a family and eventually to become a one of the biggest cultural icons in the world. A highly fictionalised account on a true martial arts legend, 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' is a biopic that attempts to be epic but unfortunately falls a little short of this aim due to its slightly weak grasp on reality. Despite this fault, it is still an entertaining and interesting drama with some highly intense action sequences, and touching emotional moments. Having seen 'Enter The Dragon' the last film Bruce Lee made before his death, I was impressed with Jason Scott Lee's (no relation) portrayal. He manages to bring the character to life through his physique, expression and excellent mimic of Lee's iconic screams of rage. Although he is not as electrifying to watch in combat as the man him self, Scott Lee is still a credible and entertaining lead. What also makes the film entertaining is the several iconic fight scenes that are some what reminiscent of the Bruce Lee video game I used to play on the 'Mega Drive' as a child. This includes the sequences with the group of sailors, group of butchers, Johnny Sun and the supernatural being 'The Phantom'. After researching the film and the man via the internet, I have found that about 30% of what happens in 'Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story' is actually fiction. For example, the fights with Johnny Sun, which really get the blood-pumping, and in which Lee breaks his back never actually occurred in real life. This is rather annoying because this is a real pivotal moment in the film that the director shifts a lot of focus on to, and having found out it is false, it somehow undermines several of the actions that Lee takes after this incident. What is also rather confusing are the sequences involving the nightmarish 'Phantom'. In real life Bruce's father was conscious and afraid of a curse upon the family name, and he passed this fear on to Bruce who in turn passed it on to his son Brandon. The ironic thing is both Bruce and Brandon died young, and mysteriously whilst shooting martial arts films. Perhaps the Lee family really was cursed; In the film This curse is personified in the masked figure of 'The Phantom', who makes 3 or 4 appearances at very strange moments in the film. Although they are supposed to be metaphorical and representative of Lee's inner demons, they do ruin the films sense of reality, and I feel the film may have been better without them. Fiction aside however, 'Dragon' is still an entertaining biopic that will please the majority of the fighting legends fans.

Fairly entertaining look into the life of the late martial arts legend and film star. This shows Bruce Lee's rise to fame and what he has to go through to get there.Jason Scott Lee is very good as Lee as he seems to have the right amount of intesity and passion as the man himself as well as the right facial expressions and fight noises!Although this doesn't go into great detail of his life,it's not an epic biopic like, say, The Aviator, but it's an entertaining look into the life of a passionate fighter who had to fight to be accepted, both physically and mentally and through that had a well deserved rise to stardom which was stopped suddenly by his untimely death.
Not great but still a compelling and exciting film at times and worth a watch.

Hugely inspirational and touching story of martial artist Bruce Lee the journeyman and master of Jeet Kune Do, this movie will have you cheering as we follow the part fictionalized part true story of the greatest martial artist to ever live.

Firstly, let's talk about the negatives of "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story". The movie plays out more like an action film rather than a biography, a balance of action and drama that usually leans a little heavy towards the action. We see Bruce in Hong Kong briefly growing up and learning the skills that would make him world famous. It seems though that no matter where Bruce goes in the film though it's an uphill battle, with Bruce fighting thugs and intolerance at every turn. It almost seems as if the movies one true message is never to judge a book by it's cover. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it almost seems like it clouds over the real story of retelling Bruce's life.

Another negative is the subtle mention and fear of "The Demon" a spirit that Bruce's father apparently handed down to Bruce who wants Bruce because he was born a boy but supposedly disguised as a girl to "fool" The Demon. It's also hinted at that The Demon was what ultimately claimed Bruce's (and his son Brandon's) life where as this is obviously just flash thrown in to round out any kind of lulls in the story. I actually don't mind the Demon and Bruce wanting to conquer said Demon, but what purpose does it truly serve to the story? Little.

Jason Scott Lee is actually pretty good as Bruce Lee, he plays it charmingly and with wit but not without letting Bruce's short comings shine through with his marital problems with his wife and his struggle to find acceptance. Lauren Holly is alright as his wife but she seems barely noticable next to Jason Scott who carries the picture. I guess it makes sense though as we want to focus on Lee, not his wife.

Through his pitfalls and triumphs we see Lee bust-a-move in a veritable cornecopia of fighters, standing up for the little guy and his own beliefs while fighting racial prejudice and trying to find his own way in the world, Dragon: The Bruce Lee story is a very uplifting picture, and while like alot of seeming bios, isn't exactly accurate and plays more on your heart strings and love for action, it's still a fun movie that has it's own charisma, carried heavily by Jason Scott Lee. Dragon is definitely worth picking up even just for a highly romanticized version of Lee's impact on the world.

Bruce Lee certainly had an astounding, short life. This movie did a fairly good job of painting a picture of the legend that was Bruce Lee. It was enjoyable to watch and left me feeling sad that he didn't live longer than he did. Jason Scott Lee gave one of his best performances in this film. I recommend this for any fan of Bruce Lee.

Jason Scott Lee saves this film from being another failed conspiracy film by accurately portraying The Dragon as both a bouncy, fun-loving family man and the dark brooding loner that his fans know and love.

This is a touching and well-done film on the life of Bruce Lee. Jason Scott Lee and Lauren Holly are mesmerizing as Bruce and Linda Lee. Any fan of Bruce Lee will want to see this film. I must admit to having a lump in my throat each time the film showed the children, especially with the birth of Brandon. The ending seemed a bit rushed and could have been stronger, but overall this is an excellent tribute to Mr. Lee and his life.
