Carmen Lee, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes

Hard-core fans of Kevin Smith (auteur of Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma) will find Drawing Flies essential viewing. This Canadian film features many actors who would later ...( read more  read more... )appear in Smith's own directorial efforts, including Jason Lee, Renee Humphrey, Carmen Lee, and Jason Mewes (better know as Jay of Jay and Silent Bob). Lee plays Donner, the unofficial leader of a troupe of slackers who've just been kicked off of welfare. Donner convinces his friends that what they need to turn their lives around is a camping trip; but as they go deeper and deeper into the Canadian forests, Donner grows increasingly erratic and finally reveals that visions have told him to search for Bigfoot. Smith has a cameo in his Silent Bob persona. Non-fans can probably leave this one on the shelf. --Bret Fetzer

A view Askew production that was produced by Kevin Smith. This was a good movie, even if it was made in Canada.

If you want to see everyone from the ViewAskewniverse in one honkin' movie, catch this one. Everyone makes an appearance.

Like everyone in high school and early college, I used to love Kevin Smith. Now, that I'm an old fart, I appreciate Kevin Smith in a new way. (No not th...( read more)at way. Golly, Kevin Smith fans always with the gay jokes.) I love Kevin Smith as a vocal blogger. His stories and Q&A's have dwarfed his movies in terms of quality. Now, I'm aware that Kevin Smith didn't actually direct Drawing Flies, but he sure had his hand dipped in them. Now, don't get me wrong, I still enjoy pretty much everything he releases. I got a big kick out of Clerks II, but one of the worst things on the planet to watch is a Kevin Smith produced film. Pretty much the concept behind these movies is that all of his little buddies want to make movies too. Unfortunately, they just don't have the talent behind them to back it up. But I will say that Drawing Flies is significantly better than Vulgar.

Drawing Flies most suffers from the environment when it was made. Right when alternative ruled the earth (the best time in music), independent film was really starting to become hip. Everyone released these low budget, lame indie movies about nothing. Drawing Flies is no exception. It is just another tale of pseudo-intellectual burnouts in a longwinded tale about avoiding responsibility and spouting off high school philosophy by the spoonful. These movies aren't terrible, but they aren't great. But people think that they are absolutely awesome because they really are dumbed down versions of antiestablishmentarianism. (I think.) Yes, I do enjoy the occasional Kicking and Screaming, but Drawing Flies brings nothing new to the table outside of Jason Lee rubbing himself down with moose sh*t. The best part of this movies, outside of the very few chuckles, is the quick-paced runtime. The movie only runs about 76 minutes and that includes an introduction by producers Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, which was perhaps more entertaining than the movie as a whole. Yes, there were some good things. The camera moved every so often, which gave it a leg up over its contemporary Clerks, but not a lot screamed decent in this movie.

Jason Lee and Bigfoot together dancing? Does it get any better?
  • May 11, 2007
This film is just plain weird but in its favour it has many recognisable people who feature in Kevin Smith's other films

Interesting but kinda slow. The ending was funny. Audio quality wasn't the greatest. Not bad for a first film though.

I love this movie!! From the Askewniverse, produced by Kevin Smith, here's this fascinating movie... a sort of "Clerks on camping".
Donner (Jason Lee) and his friends have no money and no job. Then, Donner has a vision of bigfoot & that drives him in the insane mission of lookin...( read more)g for him in the woods. Bringing his friends (if you love the Askewniverse, you'll recognise most of them, including Jason Mewes) with him (without explaining the TRUE reason of the trip), he'll spend the next days in this insane & pointless reseach.
Black & white style, funny dialogues (but far from Kevin's ones).. Really not bad!

Drawing flies? What's so special about that?

Better budget and better overall screenplay than The Blair Witch Project.
