Dreamgirls

Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, Jennifer Hudson

Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, "Dreamgirls" follows the rise of a trio of women--Effie, Deena and Lorrell--who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent compe...( read more  read more... )tition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor Jr., who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James "Thunder" Early. Curtis gradually takes control of the girls' look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Although the Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.

Entertaining & emotional! Eddie Murphy is back on top thanks to his seriocomic performance as Jimmy "Thunder" Early.

I didn't care to se this but decided to give it a go, and honestly, saw nothing that I haven't already. The film is as conventional as the ever popular biopic, or in this case a semi-biopic (not that the crew honestly makes any mention of it) has become.

They struggle for fame a...( read more)nd fortune, they get fame and fortune, they become corrupted or swayed by fame and fortune and some other poignant character of sorts, they fall apart / someone ends up doing drugs at some point, either leading to their untimely death (which is a wake up call to the others *tada* they're all best friends again / happy ending*) or is just enough of a scare to get them back on track, everyone finds a means to becomeing popular again (bad people shrink away) and go on to be pioneers in the industry.
Though all this isn't the story of what was thought to be the 'main' characters themselves it all makes up the story of all the characters contained therein.

So, as usual the only reprieve for me is the music itself which is always worth it. Jennifer Hudson has definately made her mark in this film, coupling a fantastic voice with some pretty good acting. And so has Eddie Murphy, I was blown away by his voice. I mean we know he's capable of all the antic filled songs of artists the like of Rick James and James Brown etc. but to think he was capable of a romantic ballad...*applause* well done.

Now I can say this out and proud: Jennifer Hudson was born to be an actress. After seeing her entire repertoire (except Sex and the city, which doesn't count), I can confirm she's an extraordinary talent on the rough, with an uncanny sensibility and passion e...( read more)very moment she's on screen. From her courageous turn in The Secret Life of Bees to her subtle, beautiful bit in Winged creatures, she doesn't need to sing to show incredible depth and tear out her guts in front of a camera. I'm a big fan from now on.

And so, I watched this. I expect the whole razzle-dazzle and big momma's voices but everything was just kind of... lame. Jamie Foxx bored me to death, I never understood Danny Glover's character, Keith Robinson stole a role that was hand-made perfect for Elijah Kelley, Anika Noni Rose was cute but annoying and I don't think Beyonce was even in the movie. Her creepy eyebrows confused me.

But Eddie Murphy is cool in his flashy role. Not great, not extraordinary, not Oscar material: just cool. His drug problems are so weakly portrayed, it's almost as if they were scared or censored.

Technically, the film is marvelous, and it is really entertaining, but it's not the wonderful spectacle everybody hoped it'd be. Weird enough, there's no soul in it, no spice, nothing to chew on. Just drag-queen costumes and Jennifer Hudson's larger-than-life performance. Her main song (you know which one) is not even her biggest moment: she has a lot more to choose from. You can touch her pain through the entire thing. It's incredible.

In case you wondered about my opinion on certain issue: yes, she deserved that Oscar. Barraza, Kikuchi and Blanchett were all unforgettable but Hudson is here to stay: and her next films proved it. Except the one about martinis and high heels, obviously.

Loretta Devine's cameo was a dream.

I thought Eddie Murphy was quite good in this, he almost made up for the dire songs that were placed in the most stupid of moments, at one point I thought that they'd break into song to announce the need to urinate or something else as trivial. The sign of a rubbish musical, shou...( read more)ld have ditched the out of sync songs, kept the performances and concentrated on character development. It's not awful though!

Im not a fan of musicals but i really liked this movie. Jennifer Hudson did a really amazing job. Some of the music in this film makes you wish you could go back to the 70s and 80s.
