'Driving Miss Daisy' is a film that spans over twenty years, exploring the relationship between the titular Miss Daisy, and the chauffeur she initially refuses to acknowledge, Hoke Colburn. The film is therefore understandably one of immense patience and subtelty, which is not to say it drags in pace; at ninety minutes, it's rather short. Still, it's nice to see a film that takes its time to unravel, and one you enjoy watching do so.

Jessica Tandy delivers a perfect performance as Miss Daisy, a woman whose mannerisms, tone of voice or facial expressions can reveal outbursts of indignation or disgust, and which often becomes a source of amusement to the audience. As a comedy of manners, the film is very funny, not in a laugh-out-loud fashion, but it definitely provokes smirks and chuckles if you catch the right moment.

Freeman and Tandy have a fantastic on-screen chemistry, and both characters are proud and stubborn in their own ways. Miss Daisy, she can be irritable, deliberately awkward and seems an expert at instilling guilt into others when necessary. Hoke, on the other hand, uses humour and a slight tongue to counteract Miss Daisy's behaviour; it's great to see two classy veterans - in a picture where character is just about everything - embody their fictional-selves so brilliantly. We think we know these characters, but cleverly the director doesn't avoid the darker side of life and how it affects them; there are two moments in the film after the couple leave Georgia for Alabama for a family birthday, where each of their facades break, and you witness what is underneath their charade of humour or pride. Parallel the scenes with a previous issue of a stolen can of salmon where Miss Daisy was practically livid, and the moments become quite affecting.

'Driving Miss Daisy' eventually boasts one of the best cinema relationship you'll see. It's intelligent, understanding, and ultimately touching. In guessing the final outcome of the film I thought the narrative could lead in only two possible directions, but luckily it went for neither; the final scenes posses a poignancy and authenticity that reverberates within the audience so you admire both these characters quite easily. Neither is perfect, but you now know them, and very few actually did in their lifetimes.

I was quite disappointed in this film. I dont think this film deserved its Oscar Best Picture. It is a very slow film that doesnt get into the real plot of the film until about half an hour way through it. But awards this film definately deserved was Best Leading Actress and Best Make-Up. Jessica Tandys performance as Daisy Werthan was an absolutely outstanding performance. And so was Morgan Freemans performance as Hoke Colburn he deserved his Oscar nominated performance. R.I.P. Jessica Tandy.

A breezy laid back styled film. Its easy to watch with no dramatic story line but instead simply about the events that follow with driving miss daisy.
i appreciated and enjoyed this film for its unique and realistic approach but i wouldn't watch it again.

Tandy and Freeman are perfect in their roles, and a much younger Aykroyd also performs commendably. This movie speaks more through what is left unsaid, and is a beautiful picture for it -- if you can catch the charming southern drawl throughout.

    DRIVING MISS DAISY (1989)
    directed by Norman Jewison
starring Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy, Dan Aykroyd

Driving Miss Daisy is about an old lady who cant drive anymore cause insurances company wont trust her after a silly accident. Her rich son hires a well-spirited black chauffeur but she doesnt want him to drive her anywhere until she has no choice. At first she wont really like him but things will evolves and the film follows their relationship over a period of 20 years.

What is interesting about the film are the performances. Jessica Tandy is wonderful and Morgan Freeman is amazing. Even Dan Aykroyd showed he could do more than just coemdy.

Driving Miss Daisy is light in tone but it works fine. It shows how America changed between teh 50's and the 70's. There are some racial comments but this film is mostly about the friendship between the two main characters. Miss Daisy is stubborn, annoying and cynical and it takes her almost 20 years to finally admit to her driver that he is her best friend in a very touching scene near the end.

Driving Miss Daisy is often funny, never pretentious and always thoughtful. Good film.

Alfred Uhry's storytelling is light and endearingly comedic, while at the same time stands out as poignant and socially relevant. A black man and a Jewish woman endure not only each other but their ever-changing Southern society over 25 years. magnificent acting, subtly rich storytelling, and just an overall pleasant, well-made film.

Sweet, endearing. It has drama and comedy. About the lives of two virtually polar opposites that grow to love and appreciate and respect one another in companionship and friendship. Wonderful acting. Funny also.

There is something to be pulled from this movie, and I think it is different for a lot of people. You will be able to relate to one aspect or anther of this film, which is what makes it good.

It only feels pretentious towards the end, preaching it's morals to the audience, but there is enough wit and humor and goodheartedness to keep it entertaining throughout.

A really good movie that isn't shoving race relations down your throat, but that's really the underlying theme of the movie - Color doesn't matter.

Jessica Tandy plays a strong willed elderly southern lady and Morgan Freeman is the strong willed black chauffeur paid to look after her. Movie takes place in the prejudice south from the late 1940's to the 70's, it covers 30 years. They form a bond that is wonderful and heart warming to watch. Top 10 drama movie!!

Jessica Tandy delivered a terrific performance; so did Morgan Freeman. The screenplay was comical and witty as well as dramatic in parts. But there's no denying that the film is boring is some parts.

I love this film which is about the friendship between two stubborn and proud individuals.
I found the scene when Miss Daisy, the self-professed pro equal rights liberal doesn't even consider giving Bo (her black chauffeur) her extra ticket to see a Martin Luther King speech sadly moving and telling of that time...
A wonderful and heart warming film with Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman at their finest.
