Dummy is the story of Steven, an aging twenty-something who lives at home with his parents and sister who are mildly nuts themselves. With a little wooden man on his lap, Steven breathes life into a character that doesn't have a name but becomes a sort of alter-ego that helps Steven break out of his shell, so essentially Brody is playing two roles.
Illeana Douglas is always a treat and Milla Jovovich turned in a nice performance and is actually likable. Enjoyable movie that shows Brody can make you laugh almost as much as he's made audiences cry in later films.
Adrien Brody stars in Dummy, as an unemployed 30 year old who lives with his parents and sister played by Illeana Douglas. Brody's character decides he wants to be a ventriloquist and sees an uneployment counselor about getting a job. He falls in love with her, and with the help of his best friend, Milla Jovovich (a punk rocker) he tries to win her heart. Good movie with an excellent cast.
Actually a surprising sweet film. A little twisted, it's hard to think that there would be a possibility to be a family as dysfunction as this one. A mother that is supportive but ?really not? supportive, in fact condescending. But she kept the family fed (oh lord, did she). A father that was so involved in battleships & battleship model making that didn?t have time to be involved in the family. A adult live in daughter that seemed against everyone but struggling to get close to someone & find her niche. A son that that needed a wooden dummy (a fascination he had all his life) to break out of his introverted nature. And a grandmother that never speaks but she seems to do a wondrous non-verbal communication to people in the family that keeps them still centered. Add in a platonic girlfriend (of the son) that even though does things a little abrasively & offensive, she does it with the best intention and out of sear sweetness. And finally, a single mom (employment counselor) that somehow finds the sweet nature & sincere qualities of the son with the ventriloquist dummy and helps him find himself & a sweet relationship. It was quite entertaining and worth a watch. I recommend it!
This is without a doubt the funniest movie I've ever watched. It sounds like a scary movie or something stupid like where they make fun of some idiot but it really isn't.
This one's really cute. Milla's character was hysterical. I laughed out loud all throughout the film. Only Brody could pull off a dialogue with himself so flawlessly! Definitely a must!
A small gem of a movie that more people need to know about. It's the story of a young man (Adrian Brody) who decides to fulfill his dream of becoming a ventriloquist. Doesn't sound all that interesting of a film, but trust me, it's hysterically funny and very touching--and all the wonderful characters seem so real. Illeana Douglas plays Adrian's sister, Jessica Walter is his mother, Milla Jovovich is his wacky best friend (who steals every scene) and Vera Farmiga is the girl he falls for. I highly recommend that you check this one out.
Not many people have heard of this movie and that's truly a shame. I was so charmed by this movie the first time I saw it that I watched it again as soon as it was over. Not only does it feature three terrific actors (Adrien Brody, Milla Jovovich and Illeana Douglass) but the plot itself is so simple that it's effect is overwhelming. Mr. Brody stars as a middle aged man still living at home who loses his job and decides to pursue his dream of becoming a ventriliquist. So he buys a dummy and through pursuing a dream finds love and happiness in a world that was once insipid and unloving. A couple other characters take a cue from him and dive into dreams of their own. The whole movie makes you believe that you're capable of living your secret daydreams. And this brand of comedy is unlike any other.
You know, I really liked this movie. The characters were differant for Brody and Jovovich and I enjoyed the whole story alot. Douglas is always the same character in whatever she's in so that didn't surprise me. Worth watching.
I love the movie blogger because I find all these great movies I watched months ago way before I was on Flixster and now I can rate them.
This one is funny in a goofy way, and definitely good. Adrien Brody plays the socially awkward nerd who gets a dummy and decides to learn how to be a ventriliquist. Milla Jovovich goes away from her normal roles in a very funny way.
There are some great scenes (brody on the toilet with the dummy, Jovovich's comment about Klezmer music, heheh)
Definitely look for this one because it's fun, Sunday morning stuff.
SUCH A CUTE, FUNNY MOVIE C: Adrien Brody and Milla were cute and hilarious! Adrien Brody proves he can do comedy in this! A nice little inspirational story as well.. telling you to not give up on your dreams, just because others may say that it's unrealistic. WATCH IT.
this is kinda like napoleon dynamite cuz they both dont fit and bullied a lot. nobody in his family is raelly cool. he meets a girl and tries to be more outgoing. adrien brody makes the movis so good. and i think the guy who wrote this movie will rwiet more movies that r just as good!
A really good romantic comedy. It's quite sweet too. Adrien Brody plays Steven who is nearly 30-year-old guy who hasn't any experience on dating. Milla Jovovich plays Fangora, who tried ridiculous ways, and phathethically funny just to make Steven ask a date on his crush. It's quite a funny film though, and really cute. Adrien Brody really did a great job on protraying Steven, as a geek. He can change any personality to fit on the movie itself. Well, of course, he is the youngest Academy Award winner.
HAHAHA this movie is awkward! I really liked it though. Milla Jovovich and Adrien Brody rocked, she was so funny he was so weird, I loved them, I love the movie, very good!
Best movie ever...it is alot like garden int hat way it feels; but it still manages to be dum ina funny yet intelectual way. I strongly recomend seeing this film. It is one that stands aprt from most others :::Lots of Drama and laughter..me likey!:::
