A sweet, touching and very funny film. Jemaine Clement plays the nerd with issues really well but Loren Horsley really steals the show as Lily. Highly recommended.

I suppose love is blind. I don't see what Lily sees in Jarrod - to me, he is crazy whereas Lily is just awkward. But the movie is engaging. I find I was hoping they could make a go of it by the end.

Reminiscent of Napoleon Dynamite though not quite as funny. The dorky, geeky characters are just quirky enough and yet remain likable enough to reach your soft spot. The families are just as quirky as Eagle and Shark which makes the film a fun watch. If you enjoy your comedies...( read more) a bit on the weird side, Eagle vs. Shark fits the bill.

Eagle vs Shark is the story of Lilly and Jarrod, two misfits both awkward in their own ways. They meet at a burger joint and fall in love over a video game. It focuses on life's relationships - family, past ghosts, and perplexing love.
This film reminded me a lot of Napoleon Dyna...( read more)mite, only not quite as funny. I did think the chemistry between Loren Horsley and Jemaine Clement was nice. They both played the kind of bumbling all thumbs roll well. I enjoyed that the family was sort of the wacky dysfunctional family, that everyone can relate with a little bit.
I would say that Eagle vs Shark was a good film. A quirky romantic comedy that is surely worth a look.

"You're a bitch and you're going to die of diabetes!"

I suppose it was inevitable that a Napoleon Dynamite clone would eventually be made. That quirky tale of nerd life captivated audiences and befuddled critics for what seemed like a decade during the summer of 20...( read more)04. So when such a quirky and nice nation state like New Zealand took the idea of a dry comedy about an uber-nerd seeking revenge against his former high school bully I was a bit skeptical of any viewing enjoyment on my part, this in spite of a rather amusing trailer. The thing is, I have this thing for this kind of flicks, even when they come off as a bit pretentious. So, while Eagle vs Shark doesn't always ring true, I can't ignore the fact that I laughed hysterically on several occasions while watching it.

Lily (Loren Horsely) lives with her brother Damien (Joel Tobeck), works a dead-end fast food job, and is cursed with being unconventionally pretty. She is also deeply in love with Jarrod (Jemaine Clement, that genius from "Flight of the Conchords"). Jarrod who lives with his roommate, works at an electronics store, and is cursed with being unconventional and, as he describes himself, "complex." He is also deeply in love with Lily's co-worker.

Fortunately for the plot, Lily makes short work of this rather large hurdle. When Jarrod drops off an invitation to his annual "Dress as your favourite animal" costume party, Lily proceeds to invite herself and her brother to the party, while also hiding the invitation from Jarrod's intended recipient. Once at the party Lily is able to capture Jarrod's affection by coming as his second favourite animal (a shark) and dominating during a video game tournament. When she purposefully loses during the final match versus Jarrod, thereby pre-emptively massaging his fevered male ego, he is unwittingly powerless to resist her charms.

Soon after Jarrod reveals to Lily that he is on a quest to redeem himself. A former childhood bully is returning to his hometown and Jarrod has a dream of finally righting all the wrongs that were perpetrated against him all those years ago. All he needs is a ride home, an audience, and a bo staff to finally vanquish his childhood demons.

It's all very well-worn stuff. Quirky and likable geeks, social outcasts, comic book metaphors... but Eagle vs Shark is able to remain fresh and engaging mainly due to its utter Kiwi charm and that of its two talented actors who are somehow able to create real human beings out of character-jokes. A wonderfully metaphorical stop-motion sequence involving apples helps highlight this strength. While Jarrod is the "hero" of this tale, he's not without his flaws. In fact, he's pretty much a dick. His overwhelming need for his father's approval leads him to act horribly and insensitive to almost everyone around him. This, while Lily struggles to assert herself and show off her best qualities to Jarrod and his family, results in her constantly being overshadowed, overlooked, and ignored at every instance.

But while the driving theme is of redemption, culminating in one of the most hilariously disturbing fight scenes ever put on film, at its heart Eagle vs Shark is a love story. A son desperately trying to heal the father he loves in the only manner that he knows how, and the woman who loves him in spite of his every unconscionable attempt at sabotaging their relationship. These people aren't perfect, they aren't pretty, and they just might be losers. But they might have finally found what truly makes them happy.

Qute liked this one. Absolutely up my alley- slice of life with quirky characters. I picked it up because Jemaine Clement is in it, who I love from Flight of the Conchords.
And he's great but I actually kind of fell in love with Loren Horsley's character, Lily. She is so sweet a...( read more)nd genuine. I love the way she looks at the world.
There were some very poignant moments which I didn't really expect. Some of the relationships in this film are so well depicted thanks to great writing and acting. I especially loved the relationship between Lily and her brother.

Also loved the aesthetic of the film; great claymation segments, art direction and costumes. And I have never seen a town with so many murals!

A great film, sure to make it into my top ten favourites of all time.
There's a lot i can relate to in this film, and for me it makes it
    very personal. which is great as it's almost like a reflection of my life;

This is a wonderful chraming honest film. Not all of it is good, but then,
niether are humans. It made my smile, and whats more it has a great souundtrack. Some really, poignant and intimate scenes. Very witty and funny, there's a lot of under the surface comedy. it explores that emotionally exhuasting battle, and how we present ourselves.
    very satisfied.

As much as I disliked Jarrod, that's a really cute movie. It has quite funny moments. Very sweet and touching. And completely filled with insecurity issues, among others.

New Zealand seems to have some raving pride in being completely fucking mad, and nowhere is that better evident than here in the peculiar story of Lily and Jarrod, two awkward misfits who find each other and embark upon one hell of a random adventure in each other's company. Laug...( read more)h-out-loud hilarious, totally unique, and full of Jemaine Clement, it's not bad at all...

Ok, it's a contradiction, but "Eagle vs Shark" is not like "Napoleon Dynamite" but it looks like "Napoleon Dynamite". Reasons? 1- This isn't a high school tale folks, but try to imagine how would be Napoleon 15 years after it. Imagined? Ok, that's how "Eagle..." sounds. 2- Napole...( read more)on is a likable and deep inside a lovely character while Jarrod is completely the opposite. Both of them are nerds and both seem disconnected to their own specific worlds. 3- "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Eagle vs Shark" are over-the-top quirky multiplied by two. So, you can affirm that "Eagle" is the kiwi "Napoleon" or that "Eagle" is a quirky loving story which resembles "Napoleon" a little. It's a contradiction indeed. Oh, by the way, even if Jarrod is one of the most hateful characters of the history you'll enjoy the movie. And you'll probably feel sorry for him at the end. Recommended.
