A huge disappointment. I really didn't want to rate this movie so low, especially since I love Flight of the Conchords. It's your typical hip indie flick. Short curt dialogue, cute shots, Gondry-esque stop motion animation sequences, non stop indie music. The actors are fine, they just didn't have much to work with. There were a few giggles, but overall the movie seemed to lack substance.
This is probably the best date movie I have ever seen... It is funny enough to keep you into it, but sweet enough to make your heart feel fuzzy. It is all about geek love, and people with near social retardation. It's got Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords and it was made in New Zealand. Don't take this the wrong way, but it is kind of like Napoleon Dynamite, but only if that movie had a good plot, and was funny and genuine... and not Mormon.
"You're a bitch and you're going to die of diabetes!"
Take away everything that made Napoleon Dynamite sweet, charming, enduring and funny and you have this stinker. It's ridiculous that the makers of this weren't sued for plagiarism, but my guess is the ND creators wanted to be in no way associated with this turdfest. One of the most unoriginal films I've ever seen. Unfunny and disgraceful. Oh, and I love how the main character is what Arrested Development would define as "Mr. F".
its ok but i wouldnt watch it again. not much seems to happen and the stuff that does isnt very dramatic. it doesnt require thought whatsoever so a great film to watch when you are tired.
It's a quirky story about two socially awkward people who fall in love. The New Zealand setting gives it a unique feel and there are several scenes that make you smile. Loren Horsley does a great job of making you root for her character to get the guy in the end. This film nicely blends romance with an artsy tone and tops it off with a great indie soundtrack. Fans of Napoleon Dynamite and Garden State will definitely enjoy this one!
Liked this one a lot more than I expected to. Cute film with likeable, weird characters. I couldn't understand what Lily saw in that... idiot... mind you, but this was surprisingly watchable and funny.
Eagle Vs. Shark is a quirky comedy from New Zealand, with "Flight Of The Conchords" Jermaine Clement, and a cast of unknowns.
It's a very funny film, with some good directing and a decent score. My ownly quip is it feels like it's been done befor...(read more)e. The wall paper and tapestries remind instantly of that now legendary Garden State scene, there's animation of the Michel Gondry arts and crafts vien, a little blonde girl who very much resembles a certain Little Miss Sunshine, a leading man doing his best Napolean Dynamite, and a leading lady playing a dotting, kind hearted, quite woman ala Miranda July in "Me and You etc". Yes there all here including a soundtrack of obligatory indie pop, I heard a Devandra Banheart cover of "Body Breaks".
That bieng said, the movie works. It's funny, painfully awkward, mean, and consistently goofy. Loren Horsley gives a terrific performance as "Lily" the films hero, who is at the beginning of the film for reasons never clearly expressed absolutely in love with clueless uber-loser Jarred. The two get together at an Animal Dress up party, and all's well until Lily discovers Jarred is planning to get revenge on a man who bullied him in highschool (which seems to be his only really coherent thought). So its off to Jarred's home town, and uncertain revenge and love, and one the best comedic climaxes and fight scenes of all time.
Jarred is ridiculously unlikable, and Lily has the loving patience of a saint, it's the sheer awkwardness of the performances which make any of this believable, the little ticks like the compulsive lying, the monotone speech, awkard stance, clothes, droll humor. The performers really drive home the story well which in the hands of others could have been God awful.
Though writer/director Taika Cohen has borrowed alot of elements from other films working in similar fields, he does so naturally, with a poise, grace, and nerdiness, left out of alot of the quirky, funny, hip, indie rom-coms. Nothing brilliant, but a solid comedy, that plays better to absurd than it does thoughtfull, but I laughed all the way through, and would reccomend to others, if it sounds like the thing for you. It's pluses easily beat out it's minuses.
I'm not really into actors, or following "the stars', but Loren Horsley's performance here was really kind of enchanting, and I would definitely be interested in seeing her again. "I am...Dangerous Person..."
It kind of made me think of Napoleon Dynamite only it at least had a coherent fake plot throughout so I stuck with it and laughed at terribly inappropriate things.
The weird undertones of this movie make it what it is. Effin Funny. There are moments in this film where you just can't help but laugh. Then there are the moments when you feel so bad or uncomfortable for the characters you squirm. I enjoyed it immensely.
I've watched this multiple times now, and realize with each viewing what a wonderful movie this is. Jemaine Clement does a wonderful job, plus the stop motion animation will pull the tears straight outta your face.
There are plenty of quirky characters in this film. There are a few moments that made me laugh out loud. I think the main female character deserves someone better than the main male character. This is a good, quirky original film.
weird and awkward and also very down to earth and relatable. not quite the magic of FotC but fans will appreciate the humor and humanity of these characters
A very good movie, but the awkwardness exceeded at times the limit that I personally have. The characters? Amazing, interesting but seriously messed up! You have to see this to appreciate it fully...
phenomenal. There are no words to describe this movie in my brain. The awkwardness is priceless and heartbreaking. You slowly watch the characters unravel and its both interesting and depressing. Amazing cast, script, costumes, EVERYTHING.
Com o Jemaine do Flight of the Conchords!!! Imperdível. As comparações com Napoleon Dynamite não são a toa, o filme é completamente "Napoleon Dynamite II: 10 anos depois". No meu ponto de vista achei melhor do NP, porque tem aquele sotaque engraçado e pela trilha.
This film starts out very clever and witty. It's a nerdy romance flick with Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords. I like the opening, but not the later acts. Not a horrible flick, but a bit depressing.
One of those films about the types of characters that never really exsist in real life, but you wish they did. Sweet, funny and endlessly quotable for those in the know.
Basically New Zealand's version of Napoleon Dynamite, but picture it 10 years after high school and have him try out an adult relationship. I must have laughed out loud a hundred times, especially when the main character attempts to beat up an old high school bully in a wheelchair with nun chucks.
This is just how i imagined this to be as soon as i saw it advertised! Really enjoyed it... loads! Its basically a love story but from New Zealand it just seems to have that special edge that captures my interest! Its amusing, sad, romantic, funny and charming all in one, a real feel good film with the occasional laugh out loud moments, the awkwardness of the characters, the shyness of the leading stars and their surreal geeky ways! Brilliant, clever and very well done!
A movie that expends too much energy on making characters seem weird and offbeat, rather than on things like plot or the motivation of characters. It's got a lot of funny parts and some of the characters are truly likable.
