Eastern Promises is not a pleasant film. Imagine a darker version of A History of Violence with a heavy emphasis on the Russian mob. The plots of those two movies aren't similar, but the uncomfortable realism of them both is the common thread that binds them together.

I don't c...( read more)onsider myself squeamish, but Eastern Promises made me positively cringe at times. Not at any excessive violence or profanity, but because it immerses you in a story and a world that's quite possibly not very different from reality. It all seems so realistic, that it reminded me that these kind of events are the actual lives of real people out there. The quality of the acting is just that outstanding.

I can't say that I loved watching Eastern Promises, but I can say that it was a very good movie. Quality and enjoyment don't always go hand-in-hand. I recommend it to anyone who can appreciate a grim movie about a bleak world.

David Cronenburg back on form after the terrible History of Violence. Well acted and well shot. Thank fuck for that!

A gangster movie with a difference, it?s subtle, non-flashy, yet it includes all the vital ingredients and perfection of a top-notch Organised Crime film.

Viggo Mortensen was brilliant in this role, the super-cool Russian ?driver? for the son of a crime family, is slick, smart...( read more) and undeniably cold. I?ve never really been blown away by Mortensen?s talents, but this role for me, showed that he can deliver an impressive performance. Cassel as always was great (and a little trivia here) took just a few weeks to learn conversational Russian for this role.

The storyline is fairly simplistic and not too ambitious as far as films in this genre usually go, yet the result is a new angle with a big impact.

This is my second viewing of this film and I was just as impressed second time around.

I think I've been watching too much violence lately.... I seem to be enjoying it.

Here you see the brutal inside workings of the Russian mafia.

An interesting movie about the Russian mafia in London. A young prostitute dies giving birth in a London hospital and her midwife tries to find her family so that the baby does not land up in foster homes. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance a...( read more)s a Russian henchman and I believe the nomination was well deserved. If you like gore, there is a fight scene that is amazing - so vicious I was considering hiding my eyes.

A great story that really made you think. I love that Cronenberg is changing up his style every now and then and coming out with these truly emotional films. Viggo Mortensen was perfect in every way, at no point did I not believe that he was a Russian mobster (well, undercover). ...( read more)There was a great feel to the movie that gave it such a dark feel.

I'm really torn on how many stars to give this movie because there are so many things that I both love and hate about it. For starters, this is an extremely violent film, true to David Cronenberg's style. That alone had me hiding during some very bloody scenes, not to mention the...( read more) expletives. Despite the fact that I actually saw most of this movie in Russian while reading the English screenplay, the performances are very strong. Just wanting Viggo Mortensen take on this role was enough to make me see this movie. Thus, Eastern Promises is a very dark story, yet at the same time it is strangely intriguing.

the movie progressed, the beginning was kind of slow

Questo film va visto, punto e basta.
E poi sono una fan degli amori impossibili.

viggo mortensen's performance was awesome, and naomi watts is always a pleasure to watch. that was all that really kept me in it, though.

Eastern Promises is a pretty hollow viewing experience. It deals with the ugly life choices facing Eastern immigrants in the West (London) but seems more contrived than truthful. full review

Ranks among Cronebergs best a first rate cast brings you as close to the russian mob as any sensible person would want to get. Deadly realism reminiscent of the Godfather or Casino. A new classic

the movie is slow, but is worth watching. the movie has a really good and weird fight at the end. sometimes they speak in russian so you'll need subtitles to understand. viggo was good. naomi acceptable, etc.

I can sympathize with your take on Eastern Promises. That film, along with History of Violence are grossly overrated and far from Cronenberg's best work (Dead Ringers comes to mind).

Well at first I wasn't sure what to think...but the longer you watch it becomes clear. This is pure story telling, not sugarcoated for Hollywood but an honest look at the russian mafia. I totally recommend this, this was great.
