Ed Wood Reviews and Ratings

Drama's usually put me to sleep. So I'm not actually sure why I liked this movie. Afterwards though I was extremely interested in Ed Wood, but alas, didn't watch any of his movies until years later. Although they suck, I have quite a bit of respect for him, mainly due to this movie.

I would say one of the best performances by Johnny Depp. His acting was so good that he even made Ed Wood seem an interesting director

This was just great. Martin Landau did a superb job of portraying Bela Lugosi and succesfully made me love him. Johnny Depp, as usual, did a magnificent job telling the story, and his personality was just sunny! Lovely.

IN MY TOP 10: A must for Tim Burton fans, Johnny Depp fans, Ed Wood fans or anyone who enjoys old B-grade horror films. It may not be a particuarly honest bio-pic but that's hardly the point. It's a loving tribute to the tragically awful (but infectiously optimistic and determine...( read more)d) film maker, and to Bella Lagosi (the original Dracula). It is also a master piece of film making.

Burton's most underrated film. Depp and Landau were freaking awesome.
  • March 21, 2009
Quirky and strange, but i enjoyed it. Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi was brilliant, and i loved Vampira.
  • March 21, 2009
It was interesting, but not a movie i'd watch over and over again
  • March 10, 2009
Delightfully entertaining, uniquely inspiring, the best film about the people who didn't make it in Hollywood, perhaps because it seems to suggest the biggest thing separating those from success is not talent but luck.

I love this movie... Best. Bio-pic. Ever.

A quirky true story about the man who was considered the ?worst Director?, told in a slight tongue and cheek manner, yet creatively put together and made for interesting viewing.

  • January 21, 2009
One of my favorit Johnny Depp movies, if not the favorite.
  • January 15, 2009
A visually stylish movie with some great performances, I wish there was more Bill Murray though. He was hilarious! Martin Landau was particularly impressive and seemed to act everyone else off the screen when he was present.

The fact that it was in black and whire drew me away from what wa actually happening cause I couldn't concentrate on it. Good over-all though

Tim Burton's best film by a mile, and one of the most inspirational films ever made about filmmaking; a stunning feat considering it's about arguably the worst filmmaker to ever step behind a camera. The performances are extraordinarily good: Johnny Depp is so infectiously charmi...( read more)ng and Martin Landau is perfection as Bela Lugosi, but every member of the stellar supporting cast -- from Bill Murray right on down to George "The Animal" Steele -- are note-perfect in their roles. It looks sublime, but for all its monochrome style and visual homages, it's one of the few Burton films where the style doesn't bludgeon the substance. A beautiful film, and essential viewing for anyone who loves cinema or wishes to create it.

Ed Wood is about the worst director ever (not Uwe Boll) and his odyssey to give us another Citizen Kane. What Ed Wood gave us was Plan 9 From Outer Space, which some call the worst film ever made (I have to argue that I've seen much worse in the last 6 months with bigger budgets ...( read more)and bigger stars).

What's great about Ed Wood is that it feels like a cheesy B movie with over the top dialogue from most of the stars. It's almost as if their lives are a B movie. Depp is awesome as Wood, a man who is so removed from reality that he doesn't realize how much his films suck.

The breakout is Martin Landau as Bella Lugosi. Landau accomplishes a feat that's difficult for an actor: he brings Lugosi back from the dead. He seels us Bella and we don't know any high pressure tactics to buy it. A deserved Oscar win for Landau.

Ed Wood is a great film that's an underdog story. Ed is a main that wants fame from his film and even though the fame he got isn't quite the same as what Roson Welles achieved with Kane there is a symetry between Woods career and Welles. Both peaked with the film they're remembered for and both faded into the obscurity of each level of their stardom. Welles did fish stick commercials and Wood did softcore porn. What's the difference?

Hilarious, yet somber "bio-pic" about the most notoriously awful director in cinema history.
  • January 5, 2009
I love this film so much because of Ed Wood's always optimistic character. It is inspiring that he kept true to his vision no matter what other people thought of it.
  • January 2, 2009
this movie is very funny, and different, but i love it just because it's different, i watch this movie anytime i just want to laugh.
  • January 2, 2009
Great film about the worst director ever ;)
  • January 2, 2009
The god of bad movies gets the respect he deserves in this strange, but mostly true biography. Johnny Depp's best performance in my book.

Forget Scissorhands, Todd, Wonka, and Herman. Wood is Burton's best film. Everyone's performances what spot on and it is just a delightful watch.

    THE MOVIE OUTLINE

"A biopic of the life and work of the legendary 'worst director of all time', Edward D.Wood, Jr., concentrating on the best-known period of his life in the 1950s, when he made 'Glen or Glenda', 'Bride of the Monster' and 'Plan 9 From Outer Space', and focusing on both his transvestism and his touching friendship with the once great but now ageing and unemployed horror star Bela Lugosi. MY APPRAISAL

REMARKABLY POLISHED AND A STYLISH CLASSIC

A masterpiece noone ever talked about since it's very underrated. One of Tim Burton's finest work. Probably one of his best movie you've ever seen. I adore the performances Johnny Depp and Martin Landau delivered. I always love you Johnny! He's a star. You know the feeling when you watch too many movies of certain actors, you'll get bored and somehow his role seems unnatural and you'll remember that he's JUST playing a role. But the thing with Johnny is, no matter how many role he plays, you'll forget that he's playing a role and you always root for his characters.

Ed Wood portrays the life of a man called Edward D. Wood, Jr. in a very unsual way. A biopic, but unlike many others, served in a quirky and eccentric way. Tim Burton is one of a kind and his jobs are all fantastic.

I admire everything about this movie, the script, the casts and all. Ed Wood is a MUST-SEE since it's hilarious, distinctive, and very inspiring. The casts make Ed Wood very enjoyable. Not Tim Burton's best. since he made many other jaw dropping flicks. I love Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd better but believe me you don't want to miss this one.

A MOVIE THAT REPRESENTS THE ART OF MOVIE MAKING.
