So ironic! An excellent movie about the "worst director ever", and definitely, the best film by the awesome Tim Burton. ED WOOD transports you back to the 50's, making use of its stylish look and comic feel. A great script and excellent directorial work by Burton make this film a...( read more) must-see. As usual, the director managed to assemble an impressive cast: Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette and Bill Murray. The classic feel of this movie is so powerful. LOVED IT!

Boom! And there he is,the worst director of all times(?),in the flesh by a master Grimm descendant.Of course he's the worst of his era,we do have a lot more ridiculous directors nowadays, yet it's amazing to see Depp portraying a caricature persona in the making!Hey,there's Orson W...( read more)elles to top it off,in the acting flesh of D'Onofrio that is.

The best of the Burton-Depp collaborations. This film vividly tells the story of "The worst director of all time", Edward D. Wood Jr. and his relationship with legendary B-movie actor, Bela Lugosi. Martin Landau is brilliant, and D' Onofrio really looks like Orson Welles!!

There is no doubt that this is one of the most underrated films of all time. It made almost no money at the box-office, which is a shame considering that it is a true work of art about the life of Ed Wood (voted the worst director of all time, but trust me, they get much worse). ...( read more)"Ed Wood" sets Tim Burton as one of the greatest directors of our time, considering his low budget and lack of a story. And how he brought back Bela Lugosi from the dead, well, that is amazing.

Great movie, Martin Landau's awards and accolades are well deserved. I laughed SO HARD at the octopus scene.

Johnny Depp and the rest of the cast were also terrific. They went through so much. This movie is a nice tribute. Tim Burton's most sophisticated film.

The story opens on these mysterious explosions. nobody knows what's causing them but they're upsetting all the buffalo.

Ed Wood, played by Johnny Depp, has a dream of becoming a big time director, producer, and writer. The movies starts with a scene from one of his plays and the...( read more)n the cast gathered around to read the horrible review. Although Ed is not exactly where he would like to be career wise, he has a wonderful relationship with his girlfriend Dolores, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. But he has a secret from her. He likes to dress in women's clothes.

Ed gets his chance to write and direct a movie. He choses the title "Glen or Glenda" for the movie is about a man who has a secret of dressing in women's clothing. Ed tells Dolores his secret by having her read the script. After the shock passes over her, she decides to help Ed and be in his movie.

Also in "Glen or Glenda" is one of Ed's favorite actors Bela Lugosi, played by Martin Landau. Ed meets Bela at a coffin store and gives Bela a ride home after. They end up becoming very close friends.

"Glen or Glenda" is a huge flop. But this doesn't discourage Ed. He presses on and gets to make another movie. This next movie also casts his friends and Dolores. Dolores is to play the female lead named Janet. The movie is short on cash and fund raisers are no help. That's when Ed meets a girl who is willing to help with the budget. And that's when Dolores loses the lead about gains the role of file clerk.

After the movie is complete, Dolores leaves Ed. And to make things worse, Bela is taken to a hospital for his drug addiction. While in the hospital waiting room, Ed meets his love Kathy, played by Patricia Arquette.

Shortly after that, Bela passes away. Ed had just started filming his next movie, again with Bela, and has the last footage Bela ever shot. Ed decides to make a movie surrounding that footage. The movie is made and Ed and Kathy get married. And in the end, Edward D. Wood, Jr. is named the worst director of all time.

This movie had everything. Great writing, directing, and acting. It's amazing to see Johnny Depp as this extremely optimistic horrible director. He gets the facial expressions and movements down to a pin on Ed Wood. Just watching him work is very entertaining.

As for Landau, he very much deserved his Best Supporting Actor award. And Bill Murray is absolutely hysterical ("What about glitter? When I was a headliner in Paris, audiences always liked it when I sparkled").

All in all, a fantastic film. One of the best from the 90's.

A really funny movie....Edward D Wood is a stupid fella, yet his love and innocent passion towards filmmaking are somehow heartbreaking!
  • July 24, 2008
Pretty good movie. Johnnny does a great job being Edward D. Wood Jr. I liked how they made the really cheesey special effects because it was how they were back then. Burton did a grat job on this film (Depp too!)

  • July 17, 2008
Didn't love it. I mean, sure it was entertaining and interesting but it just didn't catch my attention as much as other Burton films have.
Johnny Depp is great, of course, as was Martin Landau who portrayed Bella Lugosi.
    Good for a watch.

It's still Burton and Depp, but it's good. I don,t know much about ed wood, but this is surely the best hommage he could ever hoped for, gaving him all respect he can hoped for. Touching, funny, beautifully done, it's another awesome movie showing and sharing the love of filmaking.

Ed Wood is classic Tim Burton all the way. Edward D. Wood Jr. (Depp) has gone down as one of the worst directors in the history of film. His woeful dialogue, corny special effects and awful continuity have given him somewhat of a cult following. Ed Wood tells the story of his lif...( read more)e, how he came to make films, and also of the friendship he formed with Bela Lugosi (Landau), the former horror film star. As Wood, Depp is simply excellent. He successfully manages to pay tribute to Wood as a man, while gently mocking his film-making ability at the same time. The blind belief in his abilities that wood possesses could quickly become annoying, but Depp is so good that you can't help but like him for enjoying himself. In many ways Lugosi is actually the more interesting character, and Landau's performance is brilliant. The black and white was an incredibly nice touch, it certainly added 'something' to the film, I don't know exactly what that is, maybe it just made it more believable that the time we're looking at are the 50's.

It's funny and Johnny is great.

Johnny Depp was great as ed wood along with the rest of the cast
  • July 2, 2008
Brilliant movie. Very different from anything I have seen before. Johnny Depp is quality as usual. Most of the cast are good actually. The film has that Tim Burton feel to it. I thought Bill Murrays parts, although small were great to watch. He is so funny.

Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" is a magnificent semi-biopic picture. A wonderful tribute to the power of passion and determination with a high dose of humour and wonderfully overacted performance from Johnny Depp that gives a perfect tone to the film.

Edward D. Wood Jr. started making...( read more) pictures in mid-50's, quickly establishing himself as a director of the worst movie ever made, exceptionally awful indeed "Glen or Glenda". He ended up badly, frustrated and an alcoholic, dying forgotten only soon to be rediscovered and gain a cult status as The Worst Director of All-Time. Or maybe we should say The First, if you look closely at what's happening nowdays.

The story comprises a "creative peak" of Wood's career, in which time he gave the world aforementioned "Glen or Glenda", "Bride of the Monster" and - Oh boy - "Plan 9 from Outer Space", focusing mainly on his relationship with Bela Lugosi - at the time under heavy addiction to morphine - played masterfully by Martin Landau.

Edward D. Wood Jr. turns out to be a complete idiot here. A deluded moron, really. Naive infant with absolutely no sense of composition or intuition. However, Burton and Depp respects their hero and their approach have nothing of a intention to humiliate him for only he was laughed-off through most of his life. Depp gives Edward such a charm in his vision of being The Next Orson Welles, you almost wants him to succeed, even though you can't stop laughing at his incompetence at the same time.

With all the enormous amount of talent involved, the true star of the picture would be a famous nowdays double team of screenwriters, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who lately wrote a terrific horror "1408" inspired by Stephen King's mediocre short-story. Their script of "Ed Wood" is simply a state of the Art. On the other hand, Tim Burton is, ironically, at his creative peak here, playing with bad props and cheap studio locations, feeling like at home.

Make sure you know anything about filmmaking before you pull any string there: i.e. one cut won't cut it. Right?
